Real-world inspiration always makes for fun art exercises... It's definitely hard to make them look ""right"". I'm definitely much more used to drawing creatures and monsters than humans, but getting comfortable and stylizing yourself definitely keeps you from making them look ""wrong". Some of my human character sketches and drawings from recent days & weeks are easily some of my best I've ever done. Practice above everything else really is the difference. It can take ten sloppy sketches to reach one you like, but the journey is always worth it. Many artist describe hands as the thing which plague their human drawings, but for me, it's eyes... It's a very rare occasion when I don't make eyes look accidentally soul-piercing.
