First, the patron sends me his/her outline - or ideas. This can be in text form, but in this case we had sketches to work with:

Based on this, I first prepare several "mannerist" sketches. Very loose, colourful stuff: These help me get a broad understanding of the creature, and its mass, proportions, etc...
I really liked the evolutionary plasticity of these creatures' hole-bearing "head" organs, so I created several more variants for my patron to choose from:
Now, my patron will choose one of these heads to go with one of the body poses shown above. Which will they be? I will reveal them all soon!
