What a treat, we got to see Nova, Activate Windows, Gareth, and Liam! I assume there was no Rocz because camera equipment doesn’t fare well in the face of nuclear weapons and or reactors built in one’s basement.

I watched this in person, from a party on a friend's rooftop in Banker's Hill. The thing with the big bay boom is that they don't just have one display. They have 5 displays, on 5 different barges, spaced out along the harbor. I was really psyched that year because from our vantage point, we'd be able to see all five at once. Instead we watched all five shoot their load all at once in 15 seconds. At first, we were all just really confused, bewildered, and partially deafened. I'm bummed I was primed for what was about to happen, because then I could've enjoyed the spectacle. (No one was hurt, btw, because everything was automated / barges did not have people on them)

One thing I'm curious about though, if we double the amount of fireworks every year and halve the amount of time, then do we destroy the Earth first or become unable to experience the event in real time first?

I live in the north of Melbourne where they go off every 20 mins on NYE, where are they getting them from? Canberra? And don't even start me on the fire risk, it's almost like NYE is smack bang in the hottest driest part of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. I get it they are really nice to look but it's not worth it

Well, that was fun, but I'm a bit disappointed it wasn't 3.5 hours long. Oh, well, don't want to kill Roz, Nova, Liam and Gareth so we can get more cracking entertainment.
BTW, Roz and Liam, don't worry, Trump will not do a second lockdown no matter what. He got an extra half million Americans killed with covid-19 and will blow right throught that mark next time. He and RFKjr won't listen to anyone but each other and Joe Rogan and the economy will come first. Hell, they'll brag about all the jobs they're creating bringing back the dead cart industry. Elon, of course, will be arguing the bodies should just lie there because he'll soon have the new self-driving Cyberdeadcart which has the handy feature of being able to pick up the corpses of the people it drives over.

4th of July is an audience participation event in Wyoming, despite almost the whole state constantly being in some upper level of fire warning during the summer. we used to count the brush fires out under the city's setup and some of the bigger houses. once thought I saw a kid standing in his backyard, bare chested and in swim trunks, lit only by a roman candle firing off in one hand

Years ago back in York, PA, my cousin and I were setting off some mortar fireworks in my lawn for the 4th of July. The kind where you light the fuse, drop it down the tube and run. About half way through the night one of the mortars detonated on the ground in the tube, and the explosion was big enough to blind and deafen everyone and leave steaming shrapnel all over the lawn. We found the remains of the mortar tube banana peeled apart like those pictures of WWII tank barrels that exploded.

The same thing happened during the Independence Day fireworks in San Diego in 2012. 17 minutes worth of fireworks went off in 15 seconds.

my dad was a mormon missionary (gross) in scotland and as a result did name my sister after one of the towns he solicited in (which has caused no end of grief over her life because americans' brains leak out their ears when they see or hear a slightly unusual name) and *almost* named me Oban. and i graduated high school in 2011 so, near miss on a mildly amusing coincidence that i wouldn't have known about until 14 years later

I live in Australia where we have a nearly blanket ban on fireworks. I remember when it was introduced and the people who got really upset with it. Having seen all the posts about distressed pets on NYE, i'm gonna be a boomer like Gareth and say they should be banned for general use. We still have idiots who let illegal fireworks off and wind up in hospital though.

On the subject of poorly managed pyrotechics, it might be too hard to get info, but the Wanggongchang Explosion of 1626 would be in WTYP's wheelhouse. The Ming Dynasty found out that keeping your gunpowder store near your palace because you don't trust your army commanders not to rebel had potential negative consequences. The spontaneous re-landscaping of Beijing took out the Crown Prince, various ministers, and umpteen thousand happy workers, and reinforced the already strong sense that the Ming had well and truly lost the Mandate of Heaven. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanggongchang_Explosion

Acting with reckless abandon for one's personal safety didn't die out when alchemists became chemists– Sir Humphrey Davy, IIRC, was notorious for tasting and inhaling all the compounds he isolated. And the process of isolating elemental fluorine is littered with assorted chemists' body parts
