Correction/clarification: there are actually SEVEN marsupials found in North American! Of those, four (grayish mouse opossum, Mexican mouse opossum, northern four-eyed opossum, and of course the Virginia opossum) are endemic, with Derby’s woolly opossum, common and water opossums having a large South American range. The misconception probably arises from the Virginia opossum (what most USians think of as a “possum”) is the only species in THE UNITED STATES. It’s not even endemic! My beautiful lads have populations all the way to Costa Rica. A distinction between North and Central America is a political construction and isn’t useful to evolutionary biology. Challenging these frameworks is a big issue in conservation right now. It’s a very common misconception and while that does reflect on how the US views the rest of the world, it’s also on opportunity to look at pictures of the Mexican mouse opossum omg look at its widdle eyes 🥺

2025-10-31 01:11:35 +0000 UTCMy personal speculation is that there was no grand conspiracy about it, no one wanted the possibility of having Osama grandstand in court or through lawyers at Gitmo, or some bad knockoff of Independence Day that hurts the administration politically

2025-07-23 00:06:08 +0000 UTCThe Intercept covered Operation Neptune Spear under The Crimes of Seal Team 6. In short, Osama was unarmed when they shot him, and the order was specifically kill only. Any talk about possible live capture was probably a deliberate lie

2025-01-05 21:48:35 +0000 UTCwant to submit an episode idea, the Gavle goat in Sweden is a a giant wooden goat constructed in Gavle Sweden every Christmas since 1966 and has been destroyed pretty much every year by the locals. methods of vandalism and fuckery have included destruction by fireworks, attempted theft by helicopter, burned to death during a blizzard, and ignition by a man from Ohio who thought he was taking part in a local Christmas tradition

2024-12-02 20:52:04 +0000 UTCAustralia's worst industrial accident, with the bridge's later popularity as a -redacted- spot adding a bleak addendum to the tale. It'd be a good episode. I'd also recommend the Manongah Mine disaster. The US's worst mining disaster. Largely forgotten today, I only know about it from - of all things - Fallout 76 devoting a surprising amount of attention to the tragedy.

2024-10-28 00:23:12 +0000 UTCKJB has its own Patreon where they very occasionally take suggestions, but generally they already have a theme ready. Norwegian Ninja would be a funny pick, though, even if it is a little hard to sell the Arne Treholt joke outside Norway, the best analogy I have is it's like putting Guy Burgess in a buddy cop movie (However, if we *are* suggesting movies, Sound of Noise would also be a funny off-the-wall pick for a robbery/heist movie)

2024-10-22 15:23:23 +0000 UTCIs there anywhere where we can suggest episodes? I would love to hear Roz' take on the 1970 West Gate Bridge collapse in Melbourne Australia. I've just been reading about it and my personal WTF?! meter has blown.

2024-10-22 12:17:46 +0000 UTCSide note, to whoever is monitoring the Patreon comments: want to see if a movie is on Nova’s radar for KJB, a wonderful spy movie called “Norwegian Ninja” something like if Wes Anderson directed an 80’s Chuck Norris flick, but with much better politics. Here’s the trailer it I think would be KJB gold: https://youtu.be/4wNVjI9bJIk?si=jGvGzIqqOTO_8IAQ

2024-10-18 23:23:44 +0000 UTCI have, I've enjoyed many many episodes. Novas political analysis is consistently terrible. I calls em like I sees em. Take for instance that time she shit on Matt Christman, a theorist/ commentator entirely beyond her calibre. Or on the recent episode where she regurgitated submental imperialist propaganda. Maybe I wouldn't call her one if she didn't spew the same nonsense any radlib would. God willing she proves me wrong in shows to come.

2024-10-18 13:39:29 +0000 UTCHave you ever even listened to this podcast? Calling November a radlib is the dumbest thing I think I've seen in a comment section in years.

2024-10-18 13:38:14 +0000 UTCSubscribed to comment that this is a good show except for November's radlib imperialist political analysis. What a tool. The main guy's (Roz?) analysis is superior in every way. She was soft on Israel's pager attack, claiming (without evidence) that it only affected Hezbollah members. Truly despicable to carry water for Israel in this way. Wanted to say something because her analysis is consistently bad.

2024-10-04 16:13:35 +0000 UTCThe apoplectic rage over Israel is pretty rich coming from someone who works for the US military. Maybe she was lured in under false pretenses? Jingling the cool plane keys in front of the autistic person so she wouldn't think about what they're used for?

2024-10-04 00:50:32 +0000 UTCActually the guy who nominally killed bin Laden is doing a bit of stolen valor. He came in after someone else shot him to land a headshot just to say he did. That's why they couldn't take any photos
John Her
2024-10-04 00:46:45 +0000 UTCThe Intercept story "The Crimes of Seal Team 6" really covers how badly the Bin Laden raid actually went down. Half the team had to be medically discharged from that crash, and Obama lied to the whole country about the whole "capturing alive to stand trial bit." His gun was unloaded and under the bed I think
