bad bike infrastructure

this is one where we talk about doing illegal stuff

bad bike infrastructure

Comments

I used to work as a tour guide that ran 8-person SEGWAY tours right down the pennsylvania ave bike lane. one time i was doing a tour for most of an australian soccer team and a guy lost control of his segway. i managed to save him with tactical segway maneuvers before he blew right through a red light, and when i turned around his buddy was laughing at him so hard that HE fell off his segway right into the road. amazingly, nobody even got hurt.

The Lan Bik almost looks like they... made a new curb!

Kyle Lempinen

1:06:20 - I instantly recognised that one on the right, as someone who has to commute down to Leith for months while that stuff was being put in. What an embarrassment.

Harry Brennan

goddamn Baltimore Ave

Not Just Bikes knows whats up with 2cb. Best drug I’ve definitely never done before…

thank you for all of your work! these podcasts and youtube videos are fascinating. i consider y'all the Car Talk of engineering disasters.

Yay! Hometown mentioned.

Love the bike content!

Zachary Kaufman

THis episode is one of the reason I decided to pay you all $2/month, this month who gets the coffee?

Clearly Donald Trump has never met my mom, who is skinny and drinks Diet Coke like it's booze: 1 can per week at most.

J Grant

Yo! I live in Bend! I've ridden on that bike lane! It's fucking awful! We've also got a bunch of sharrows downtown that drivers seem to be unaware of. I get honked at for going too slow all the time, despite there only being sharrows on one of two lanes. I'm moving to Monroe Washington in two weeks, it has even worse bike infrastructure. I don't own a car.

Jupiter Jones

I live in DC, and occasionally take those bike lanes, and they are death traps…

Ed Stewart

Alice literally tells one joke per minute of this episode. And then other people are also telling jokes. I laughed so hard watching this it was unbelievable.

I think the stubby bike lane at King's Cross is from before the "except cycles" sign was allowed to be added to No Entry signs in the UK - the last 20 feet of road there looks like an exit only, so it'd be No Entry from the main road - you then add a little bike lane to let cyclists into the side road without admitting drivers. Not done a Google Streetview here, so it's just a guess. EDIT: bingo - now has a qualifier sign in the reverse angle Streetview at https://www.google.com/maps/@51.5301741,-0.1207551,19z

Looks like Brisbane is starting up an atmospheric railway. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-02-28/epa-rules-pet-burials-unlawful-bamganie-pets-cremation-service/100868004

Thank you for shouting out Wheels for Wellbeing!! They are amazing - I'm disabled and got access to a trike for free so I could learn and get confident through them. Was completely lifechanging!!

44:10 I’m from Boston, and WTF is a “weave area”?? That shit looks wicked scary. Just use a rotary like a civilized person :P

Joe Arnold

RSS audio feed plz

Detective Pete Black is an unimaginative pseudonym for a Dutch agent.

Jeff Dill

Totally worth the 2 bucks a month

P.s. Not just bikes is to blame for my WTYP Fandom. Thanks.

I just signed up and I already have to unsubscribe?

Wishing the best for your hairline, Alice.

I lived in a mountain town in NC and they had little tractors to clear the sidewalks. They were so cute. I would have given anything to be in charge of the sidewalk clearing so I could drive a 1/4 tractor with a tiny plow.

Ben Gialenios

Had a bike stolen when I was living in Athens,Ga. Since it was on campus, the campus police came when I called the cops. They asked me if I wanted to press charges and when I said no they were like, we’ll there’s nothing we can do for you. Yeah the cops don’t give a shit ab finding your bike or helping you.

Lol "I'm pretty sure there's a car laser" yeah its Herbie The Love Bug. My favorite bond movie

I also also agree

As a Canadian who once dated an English woman, I can confirm that the multiple meanings of the word "cottaging" can be problematic.

Cameron Roberts

i also agree with the fellow hogs in wanting an RSS feed for audio-only bonus episodes

Cassandra Banner

RSS. RSS. RSS.

rob fuller

Please, i beg you, a premium rss feed. Please, i'll suck you off

Richard

Instead of a spear on the back, get one of the thunderpoons from Mad Max

No Madden! What the bloody bloody hell am I even paying for? /s

*drunken Ohio accent* O-H!!

Marjorie Zeager

My first ever sub to a patron just for this episode.

Do the going east on Grey's Ferry at the Washington Ave intersection!

I know, right?

Not Just Bikes

Madden in my head.

Folks interested in the best gags-per-minute shows should consider the underrated TV program Angie Tribeca. Later seasons are weaker overall but it hits a beautiful Police squad style stride right out of the gate and sustains it through most of season 2.

What I originally came here to say before I got distracted above is that as somebody who rode my bike to school/work for a few years, sometimes 20-30 miles total in a day I really came to notice the difference between the good infrastructure and the bad. I’m lucky to have a nice former narrow gage rail way which was converted to a bike path which provides smooth sailing for 60% of the journey. The second half would be block to block biking which given the “get gud” approach to cyclists here in the US doubles or triples the toil AND HAZARD I used to endure daily. I propose that we force motorists to “get gud” by forcing them all off road so that the pavement and asphalt can remain the EXCLUSIVE domain of the BICYCLE MASTER RACE. We must return to the days when a human on a mount was the better of any mere PEDESTRIAN rather than the scared prey of the distracted motorist. We must kick the drivers and the trucks from the 5 land urban freeways so that spandex guys may ride 14 abrest i a triumphant parade of glory. Let America’s calves and thighs become as big and stout as our bellies. The revolution will be recumbent

William Shifflette

thanks for constantly putting out content THE PEOPLE want to hear and by the people I mean me because I didn’t think there were others who shared my love of engineering disaster fear porn. I love trucks+guns almost as much as I love TRAINS because when you look at the modern world from the perspective of THE TRAINS you begin to understand what the world COULD BE rather than what it is. Please do an episode on an engineering disaster in Brazil, I’ve had lots of exposure to Brazilian culture and interest in their history from my involvement in Brazilian Jiujitsu (a Nazi filled engineering disaster in itself) Brazil has the perfect combination of unbelievable corruption, irresponsable government policy/actions and “random acts of love”. The Goiania incedent episode was great, that whole story is like a peak in to the future of American decay that lies before us in the coming century if we elect the elect the Orange man or someone like him again in 2024

William Shifflette

Swiss army bikes optional fit with rpg are real. Stinger missle model should be available with minimal retrofit.

Accidentally deleting video files, losing audio, having to rework hours of podcast every other month -- and this is still one of the best podcasts out there (unless you're a fascist).

recreating the video feed for this and not even adding in Activate Windows, smh my head

Lars Bryan

Okay but 2CB is a fun time tho

Tyler Moran

Can I pay $10 for you to restore the video file from recycle bin TwT

It just wouldn't be WTYP if there were not some kind of technical issue during production. Cheers.

I made a patreon account specifically for WTYP, and I'm so addicted to it, great work. Also, I can't explain the intrinsic hilarity of "Eh, I fucked up a bit, there's no pointer drawings. There's still slides, but it's gonna be confusing. Um. I mean, it's a bonus episode though so you paid for it. If you're mad, I guess unsubscribe. Whatever." Y'all's cavalier disregard for consumerism fills me with glee every time <3

Man, when Not Just Bikes mentioned the rumble strip for the blind at that highway crossing, I lost it. Just a Refuge in Audacity there. "Look, we've got to make sure blind people can cross here too, okay?"

Dean

Lewes, Delaware has both painted bike lanes on 35+ mph roads and new separated bike paths connecting Lewes to Cape Henlopen, but it's still a WIP as it isn't clear how to access the new paths from the main roads and it's impossible to access it from the ferry without crossing 4 lanes and walking 30 ft through the woods.

titus virginia

Hi, I just subscribed, I was wondering if there was an RSS link I was missing so I can listen to the bonus episodes on a podcast app? Thank you. Oh dear I as I ask this I hit well here's your problem not here's 'our problem'. Well anywho.

y'all have been churning out content, take it easy!

As a native daytonian I appreciate the kind words but that pictures in Columbus

Mae Berens

The clearest solution is to embrace the fully evolved form of the bicycle: the motorcycle.

Ariadne

The Ottawa example isn't even the worst one on that street.

Illius Dope

As always, I'm here for the Truck Talk minute.

Ellie O'Daire

Once you get the timing down it's actually pretty easy to dodgeroll between lorry wheels you just gotta get good

TallFroGuy

cant wait to listen. BBI in Portland O should be a 11-episode series.

Richard Fitzgerald

They should just make bones with Elden Ring horse-rules. If you jump off (or on), you get several invincibility frames. Granted, they’d have to place occasional vertical wind vortices that you can jump down onto from extreme heights (That’s a pro tip to my Elden ring comrades. Those winds aren’t just for going up!)

Joe Arnold

I am bursting with civic pride! Thanks for showing Jacksonville's bad bike infrastructure. My day has been made.

Doug King

On the "Bup Stop" thing, my personal favourite was when crews painted "ARAF" in the road before a series of dodgy bends... in Flockton, West Yorkshire. It lasted about three days.

We have this guy in Pittsburgh who looks like Flava flave and rides his bike on one of the most dangerous roads with a car bumper attached to the front of it. Pretty cool

Nicholas Kidd

The "Bike Lane" where I live was very literally created by painting a bike icon in a few places along what was originally the line they painted to separate the road from a gravel ditch that quite often has overhanging blackberry vines reaching into it at head height and more often has long rows of cars parked on stretches of it. I own a bike but I don't use it because I want to live.

Oh hell yes

I must emphasize, what these bikes are doing is HIGHY ILLEGAL

Allen

On other podcasts there is an rss link in Patreon but I don't see that for Well There's Your Problem. Try yelling about it? It shouldn't be that hard to set up

GreenRuin

Oh damn! Another Not Just Bikes episode! 😳

Not Just Bikes

"you know who we are" Yes. Goddamn heros. Also, I'm very stupid (licensed civil engineer) is there a feed for the bonus episodes so I can listen to y'all at 3x in podkicker and miss out on slides?

Amy Cook

Thx Roz

I'm putting "highly ill-legal" on my bingo card before I start

GreenRuin

I had a solid 25 seconds of deep dread as I thought that you were saying you deleted Penn Central pt. II

etienne

sad I can’t see the John madden illustrations at least it wasn’t fully lost.

John Madden has been compromised to a permanent end

etienne

hell yeag

Helena McCoy

mad!

"the one" implies you've never done that before. Also, rules are for cars.

NM

Uh

Legally speaking everything happens in roblox unless specifically stated otherwise. I read it in a book.

Hell yea illegal stuff! *breaking the law plays in the background

Corran MacCorran

hell yeah lfg
