Bonus episode 3: gun

Comments

No this is the "guns" part of the sentence.

Warmachine

Is this the one about pick up trucks with guns on them?

James Hamilton

I am surprised that Alice didn't point out one of the key problems why the workmanship was awful: the Royal Small Arms company was closed down, meaning that the people that were told to make it were going to lose their jobs in their foreseeable future. I would also like to raise a point out why bullpup: to make it shorter without making it have less pew. Otherwise you make a carbine that does not perform as well as the longer version due to the barrel not being the length the cartridge was designed for. You want shorter because you have soldiers carried in cramped armor carriers or helicopters or they are tank crews. This is why the Aug and FAMAS and Tavor.

Bónitz András

Reportedly "Mikes comment was after seeing the SA80 was, "You must have very clever soldiers."

But also, there's no problem with the 7.62 NATO / .308 as it's referred to in the US. It's used to this day. The only change was a shift from rifles that fire few small bullets to many small bullets. The shift went one way, and now it's actually going back the other way to deal with body army in the hope of sending many heavier bullets but making the complete round lighter.

"We're going to be demonetized." "Alice we're not monetized, we're adults." I found this podcast by searching for Alice who has another great podcast "Kill James Bond" so I hope she spreads a little of the WTYP money she's getting to some of her other co-hosts. I'm binging both your public and bonus episodes. It's worth $2 a month especially because some episodes are fucking Peter Jackson three hours long. Alice I'll probably get started on Trash Future after this, I spend 4-5 hours a day walking my 1 year old around.

Oh hey, Alice and I have the same experience with the same rifle. Also, I was on sentry in the field, and wasn't able to clean it before doing an attack. I remember having to pull that handle back with violent amounts of force to cycle every round. Can confirm that it's more susceptible to grit and dirt than the AR15 platform

Anghellik9

My favourite design choice in the L85/L98 is the fact that you can completely break the rifle (to the point it has to be sent away to a gunsmith) if you insert the gas stop with the sprung retaining pin in the wrong orientation

Thank you for bringing back awful memories of cleaning these pieces of shit (well the L98A2) in Cadets. I'm very glad I never had to trust my life with one is all I can say.

Worth calling out that the M1 Garand and the M14 don’t use the same caliber. The M1 uses 30-06 (“thirty aught six”), while the M14 uses a similar width but less powerful 7.62x51mm (.308) round. More powerful than the eventual 5.56mm, but less powerful than the .30-06. American military leaders were indeed obsessed with .30 cal, but even they were aware that 30-06 was too much. Also, the M14 was supposed to be full auto. This was dumb.

so many missed joke opportunities by not mentioning the inventor of the M-16 was named Stoner

Alex Roselle

lmao what, my cadet rifles were semi

LiterallyJudas

Somewhat boringly H&K belonged to glorious Brittania at the time so it was throwing exorbitant amounts of money at ourselves laundered through some shareholders

James Taylor

A lot of the problems with the M16 at the start happened because the people in the army doing the resource management also had ties to Springfield Armoury, who was making the M14. They looked at the M16 and thought, we'll we're not getting paid for it so its not staying around for long, and went and got the shittiest over powered ammo for it cause it was cheap. And didn't get cleaning kits because, it was never going to be put in service so why bother. And then it did go out. And it did good. Really good that it lasted several months until the fucked up ammo and lack of cleaning burnt it out. It was full sabotage and men died because a couple forgotten guys were getting kick backs from SA Small Arms Solutions on YT has good vid on this and Forgotten Weapons interview with Jim Sullivan it gets mentioned

fisher price plastic is good quality and very durable :(

Given the subject and the left love, it's stunning that Comrade Alice missed a chance to Up the Antifa by not discussing the ground breaking self-loading SVT-40, pictured in slide four in the hands of the jungle camo-clad partisan (see also the cursed boy in the movie COME AND SEE)

Imagining a young Alice teaching cadets how to fire a rifle, has me some kind of way.

Is there an RSS feed to listen to the bonus episodes?

Also I think it was £400/A2

JARITA

In air cadets we got to fire the SA80 with blanks on full-auto which was fun times (we weren't officially supposed to do this), and the even bigger piece of shit L96A1 which was the cadet rifle which took away all the fun bits (it was basically bolt action). More senior cadets got to do target practice on semi-auto with L85s chambered in .22 but I was a shit cadet so didn't get to :(

JARITA

When I was in JROTC they never let us do stuff with firearms unlike what Alice was talking about with the British kids getting to do target practice, though I was in AFJROTC so maybe that's more of an army thing. But we did have surplus Garands for rifle drill practice (marching, not shooting) that had their barrels filled with lead and the firing pin removed. Every time they let us handle them I was sad that they ruined a perfectly good surplus Garand like that

oldmetalpossum

As a former JROTC person....I'm so glad I quit that shit and became the dirtbag I am now.

oldmetalpossum

Those jewish partisans with the MP40... where they also using mazel tov cocktails?

They had absolutely nobody left who understood anything about designing firearms. It's fucking amazing it wasn't even worse.

Amadeus Phoenix

You have to go out of your way to make a firearm so butt ugly

Please do the Tsar Tank at some point! That would be so much fun

The M16 comes from the AR-15, not the AR-18. The AR-15 is different from all the other guns in that it doesn't have a gas piston.

Rusty Shackleford

shout out to the guy behind me on the cadets camp ambush training exercise who couldn't pull the slide back properly so it jammed and I was terrified I'd get injured by their rifle if the blanks exploded

Maz

To be fair, I have a bunch of Ram Sticks in a Computer - while being german. So that's a thing. It's a Work Station that takes ECC Ram, and the Non-ECC Ram it came "upgraded" with from the seller, I just threw them into the case when putting some ECC-Ram back in.

Ewald Raming

I mean, I hate right wing gun people as much as anyone else but they're not just pretending when they say a commercial semiauto-only weapon is not an "assault rifle". Having the capability to fire fully automatic or in bursts is integral to what an assault rifle is.

for what its worth on his other channel inrange they made a video about the underground railroad that i would not ever expect from anyone with right wing politics, and he has consistently shut down idiots talking about white genocide and stuff in the comments

Jack

fuck I can't wait till ian mccollum admits he's a leftist and goes on WTYP

Jack

Luty developed his own homemade gun. He didnt just reproduce a Sten

That would be the episode on the Howell Automatic Rifle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U682yOpNafg

Ever think of a mini-episode on gas-powered leaf blowers? Specifically because using them for extended periods of time will wreck your hearing and will give you lung cancer from the exhaust fumes?

Cooper Wickum

Also, stamping isn't a problem. The STG 44 is largely stamped. The Soviets switched to a stamped AK 47 (AKM) in the late 50s. The quality was better, and it was more reliable. The SA80 is designed by a bunch of engineers who specialized in cost cutting, not in making guns.

The SA80 doesn't come from the EM-2, it's actually an adaptation of the AR-18, so Armalite, same as the M16 haha. Actually a better design, mechanically.

Is that sarcasm? Sorry if I’m missing the joke, but he’s the opposite of that.

Joe Arnold

Ian is at least a strong advocate for us lefties

I like Ian’s content. I really don’t like guns, but I do love history and invention. The stuff he shows usually has both. I DON’T like when he, say, does a little skit where he dresses up like a “thug” (coded stereotypically black) and pretends to be shot in a drive-by. or when his awful politics beliefs appear as he promotes the NRA and other right-wing, corrupt entities. Good content, otherwise.

Joe Arnold

That was really well put together, thank you Alice and the guys for another good episode! I think another thing that absolutely doomed the L85 was that it was designed by engineers who didn't really work much on guns previously, and were trying to meet design requirements from guys who just had a checklist of shit they wanted on a gun, without much input from guys who actually used them, particularly early on in the development leading up to the SA-80 and L85.

Thomas Stanley

I'm looking forward to the bonus episode about how Protestantism and/or atheism are the true engineering disasters. (I say this as an atheist from a Protestant background.)

Link to the Forgotten Weapons episode on the steampunk rifle?

Do you take pitches for guest episodes? As an engineering student I'd love to come on and talk about the averted collapse of Citigroup Center in 1978.

Alice I'm not a gun person and was expecting that I might not like this episode as much as some of the others just based on that. But I *really* enjoyed it and laughed a lot, don't be so hard on yourself. You've totally got this.

Ever Gemma

Being right handed but left eye dominant I feel Alice's pain. Shooting right handed guns left handed is a pain in the ass.

I canceled my Crunchyroll subscription after seeing this show and decided to reform myself

Mags

The first time I heard of the SA-80 was one time at midnight on a lark I watched an anime series about anthropomorphic guns in a middle school and the SA-80 was a girl with cronic health problems and an irregular mental cycle...

Atahualpa's Revenge

Student leadership was split between legitimately cool people and power-tripping shit heads. Cool people always got fucked over by the student and adult leadership. Staff Sergeant was cheating on his wife with a student's mother. JROTC teaches you how to mistreat people beneath you, and it teaches the people beneath you to accept that abuse.

I used to be JROTC. Fuck JROTC.

Thanks for the shout-out Alice -HVAC repair guys

Also, Aberdeen Proving Grounds doesn't do that much physical testing these days

I have actually used the SA80. (In 2007-2008 when I, an undiagnosed autistic teenager with severe insecurities and (at the time) right-wing views, joined the UOTC at university in a misguided attempt to reassure myself that I was a Real Man. It did not work.)

ok at the 10 min mark that's basically confirmed so I guess my comment is pointless now

Jessi Lloyd

less than 10 mins in and I'm 80% sure Alice watches Forgotten Weapons

Jessi Lloyd

do DDT next

Love the podcast, love the bonus episodes, any chance of audio downloads for the bonus episodes as well? No worries if not but it'd make it much handier for me to listen.
