In cartomancy (tarot with playing cards) the ace of spades is the end/beginning of a cycle. So death/birth are well within those bounds I feel.

Isn't the ace of spades the death card?

This pod launched me into a full Cowboy Bebop rewatch! I knew it was a great show but I hadn't realized how much I needed to watch it again. Really enjoying the conversation and analysis, and the energy you guys are bringing!

Wow, this is so fun! You really highlighted one of my favorite things about Bebop - it’s subtlety. Most anime LOVE to spell everything out for you, while Bebop just throws you a handful of beautiful pieces and lets you make a story. And that story might be totally different from the person next to you that just watched the same thing. I never thought Faye and Spike were in love, for example (and as a teenage girl watching this for the first time I can tell you I really wanted that, but just didn’t get that impression). Possibly that Faye was in love with Spike, but definitely not vice versa. As Abe said, Spike is already “dead” in a way. To fall in love requires growth and change and Spike is fresh outta both. I also really liked the conversation about the antagonist often needing the protagonist to be like them in some way. It’s interesting because, as Adam said, we get hints that they really were alike. We see in flashbacks that they hung out, along with Julia, and seemed like a group of friends. So , while Vicious just seems like this cookie cutter anime maniac on the surface, when you dig deeper you kind of get the impression that he was betrayed and abandoned by both his best friend and (possibly) his girlfriend. So it gives a little different slant to it and almost a hit of sympathy for the devil.

I love the casual efficiency of this pod. So damn fun
