799. Escape from the Multicurse: Turtles Forever

Our three co-hosts are stuck in the multiverse and need to get back to their home universe. Clearly, the only way to do that is to explore our cultural obsession with multiverses, alternate timelines and parallel worlds, and tie it all into a conversation about post-modern art, pop culture, and the lessons these stories teach us. Also, each episode, one of them is an asshole who will probably sabotage the whole thing.

This week we discuss 2009’s Turtles Forever!

Make sure to stick around until the end! You get a free listen to a track on Michael’s new album which you can purchase at our Patreon shop!

Just finished watching Arcane Season 2... This could be chatted about now! I mean, to be honest i'd like any excuse for you all to chat about it!

The IDW run a few years ago was pretty good, at least the volumes I read. Good art and story

That context makes sense does make me more interested in originals

This may be my favorite Abe bit. Edit: Also my favorite Swaim Rap

I was also a Marvel character lore enthusiast who thought the comics were very boring and unengaging! Hooray for a specific kind of weirdo!

Ordered!

Agreed. All of my friends that are turtles fans say that this is the best thing to come out of TMNT in a long while

I’m very familiar with the 2003 TMNT series, as I just did a rewatch recently as it was the turtles show I grew up with and I have some lore. - Hun originated in the series as a henchmen of the Shredder, along with other characters like Baxter Stockman, towards the beginning of the show - The Shredder was the main antagonist for the 1st 3 seasons of the show, at least this version of him, which was then revealed to be an Utrom, an alien species seperate from Krang that are also robot bodies with sloshy heads in the stomach. Subsequent seasons introduced things like original Japanese mystical Shredder that had magic powers and who Utrom Shredder stole the appearance from. - Peter Laird, one of the original creative partners on the original TMNT comics and also a leading force on the TMNT related projects, was actually an executive producer on the show and that’s why the show adapted comic runs like Shredder Strikes Back and others, as neither he or his creative partners had any actual input on the 80’s/90’s show. This is why they constantly shit on the 80’s/90’s show, cause they didn’t have any involvement. Side note, that show is actually what launched their more well known characteristics, like having different colour headbands instead of all red head bands, giving them their iconic personalities and their love of pizza. I’d like to take Mike up on his request if he’d like to discuss more. I can also recommend good arcs from the 2003 show so you don’t have to watch the whole thing.

Abe has some really awesome bits on this pod. I'm a little sad the Sorceress of Goboblarn didn't make it to Mike's d&d game

drunkencoyote

To Mike's Question about good turtles comics: People sure seem to hold "The Last Ronin" in high regard.

I can't speak for later TMNT comics but the original run is delightful weird fun. It's not only gritty and violent, it's also a parody of comics including itself, e.g. the Foot clan is making fun of Daredevil's antagonists The Hand. Because the series started as a joke they felt free to write whatever they wanted, Casey Jones is a marauding vigilante making fun of the Punisher, there are mad scientists, dimension-hopping, triceratops men, and a touching story about Michaelangelo adopting a cat. https://www.miragelicensing.com/comics/mirage/volume01/20/20.html Apparently 2020's The Last Ronin is an answer to The Dark Knight Returns but I have not read it.

Listened to this on 1.25x and the ending became a Rage Against the Machines track

You can blame the Fox cartoon censors for the footclan becoming robots and shredder becoming a cobra Comander type. Almost all cartoon violence got shifted to violence against robots in order to deal with antiviolence censorship. Same thing happened to DragonBall and DBZ.
