798. 1Upsmanship: Star Wars Outlaws

Gonna be honest: Adam and Michael, who think Star Wars is pretty sweet but fairly just alright, take time out of their busy day to dunk on the new Star Wars video game installment. They talk SW names, game design, and Ubisoft as a whole. But hey, it’s still Star Wars. There’s Bleep Borpo, or some shit. It’s dope.

I know you might not want to cover indie games that much, but the community and following for Binding Of Isaac might be important enough to visit it. The only thing is that is does require a lot of hours to really experience the game. Otherwise, Small Beans started with Michael announcing it in an Enter The Gungeon stream... maybe that would be a game to cover?

Great thought. In general we try to evaluate games based strictly on the content and not necessarily the critical conversation around it. There are rare exceptions (the chat around Cyberpunk for instance), but we tend to try to keep distant from those issues unless we feel they’re inextricable. This show often runs out of time with release dates/conversations as well, so by the time we’d deliver our hot community takes people usually have already moved on. We still appreciate the feedback and always consider your ideas!

I don’t know if it’s appropriate here or if it deserves it’s own episode, but I would have appreciated a bit more of a discussion to the backlash to the game or in general kind of your thoughts on the “woke” games controversies going on at the moment. I’m not endorsing the “controversies”, I think their dumb and they attack marginalised groups and are often mean spirited, misogynistic and gross, but as this was a game that was a lightening rod for this I think it was worth some discussion on as these talking points are often targeted as aspects that make a game bad as opposed to the technical or artistic points brought up by Adam and Mike.

Hey it's that commenter from the first time. I have trash taste because I enjoyed Starfield, Hellblade, and Outlaws, but I appreciate the effort this time to accommodate us trash people and make it a fun listen anyway :)

I'm glad I listened to this before buying. I made the mistake of preordering starfield before I heard your take and I don't plan on making that mistake again.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is also up there for me.

A Ghost Recon:Wildlands style game with the tone, vibe, and writing of Andor was right there. Both Ubisoft and Star Wars are capable of delivering impact and nuance. This was the first merging of the two, and it's clear that choices were made to avoid risk. That's a shame.

Please talk about KOTOR 1 and 2. One episode for both is fine, but I’d love to hear your take on those two.

I used fetch to steal things in zones where I couldn't pick items up by hand in front of NPC

My nomination for All Time Ubisoft Game : Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Even if a remake never happens, this 2005 stealth classic is 100% deserving of the drive for so many reasons.
