783. Escape from the Multicurse: 12 Monkeys

Our three co-hosts are stuck in the multiverse and need to get back to their home universe. Clearly, the only way to do that is to explore our cultural obsession with multiverses, alternate timelines and parallel worlds, and tie it all into a conversation about post-modern art, pop culture, and the lessons these stories teach us. Also, each episode, one of them is an asshole who will probably sabotage the whole thing.

This week we discuss 1995’s 12 Monkeys!

i gotta say guys, i was excited for this episode since i love the movie and i was interested to say what you had to say about it but i turned it off after 20 minutes because the bit was just too annoying. really ruined the entire episode for me. your bits have always been on the edge of funny/annoying but this one sucked hard.

I do think it would be really cool if the multicurse boys discussed 'La Jetée' the still image sci-fi short that inspired this film.

Started out as the worst bit in the history of the show but Adam really used the power of his charisma to turn it around! “Yes, I also saw this movie. I love monkeys.”

James Crosslin

Didn't Swaim do this bit for Star Trek?

Matt

This has got to be one of my favourite asshole bits of this series, Adam is hilarious. Everything he said was an immediate derail and it was amazing

Gotta disagree on the score. That title song slaps!

I thought it just meant she was there as a backup in case Bruce didn’t succeed, but your interpretation is more fun. I really miss OPCD btw.

Steve Snyder

That’s right. That guy’s a creep in real life too.

Steve Snyder

It was Doug Hutchison who was Tooms in the X-Files and the horrible guard in the Green Mile.

I don't think Bruce gets enough credit for his chops when he is allowed out of the action roles. Death Becomes Her was a great movie for said chops

Legit question - Did anyone else think the scientist on the plane saying “I’m in insurance” meant you actually CAN change things? I interpreted that to mean the scientists wanted a cure in the future but didn’t want to stop the virus because then they would lose power. Still makes a similar point about being caught up by forces beyond your control but even more sinister

I’m so glad Mike compared this to a Greek tragedy, that helps me understand why I didn’t like it. It’s been about 20 years since I’ve seen it but I think I agree with Abe, I thought this movie was pretty boring when I saw it. Also, I can’t be sure but I think I remember one of the ladies from the prison in the future being on the plane next to David Morse when he has his scene, and she said that she was “in insurance.“ I always took that to mean that she was there as a back up to kill David Morse and that she it does off camera. In that sense we didn’t get the resolution that we wanted, the whole movie was just kind of a waste of time seeing a hopeless character fail while a different character ends up succeeding off screen. I must’ve mis-remembered that because I really thought you guys would’ve mentioned that if that were the case.

Steve Snyder

David Morse wasn’t the horrible guard in the Green Mile, that was the liver eating guy from X-Files.

Steve Snyder

I think Mike was talking about Contagion when he was talking about tracking an invisible virus from vector to vector. I love these podcasts btw, they’re a hoot.
