Fat Shark Attitude V5: Summary and Followup Questions
Added 2019-06-13 17:50:56 +0000 UTCHere's a summary of my review of the new Attitude V5 goggle from Fat Shark, and the answers to a few questions people asked in the comments.
My video review is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8EzoEBjEqM
The Attitude V5 has OLED screens that look amazing. Better color, saturation, and contrast than anything else on the market except maybe HDO.
The V5's resolution is 640x400. This is lower than some competitors, but compared to true WVGA goggles like the Commander V1S, the Attitude looks way more detailed. There is more to good image fidelity than the number of pixels on the panel.
The Attitude V5 is being listed as having a 4:3 panel. It doesn't. It's not 16:9 either. The 640x400 panel has a 16:10 aspect ratio. People have speculated that's because it's an old Sony viewfinder panel, which had this aspect ratio and resolution. The Attitude V5 will show a slightly stretched image whichever camera you use, but it is closest to a wide-screen 16:9 aspect ratio.
FOV on the Attitude V5 is 30 degrees. This is pretty small, but mostly on par with other goggles in this price range, except for the EV200D, which is much larger.
The Attitude V5 comes with a diversity module built in. But it can take an aftermarket module too, including RapidFire. It does not need to be modded to use RapidFire.
The Attitude V5 comes with a case that takes 18650 lithium cells. You will need to buy some 18650 cells and a charger for them. The up-side is that they last a long time and are easy to swap in the field.
Still no power button. You still have to plug in the balance plug to run the fan. IPD is the same as previous goggles.
If you are looking for the biggest possible image in this price range, consider the Eachine EV200D. But some people are reporting quality issues with these goggles, and support is nonexistent.
The SkyZone Sky02X has good looking image and great feature set. Screens are about the same size as the Attitude, and higher resolution. I still think the OLED screen on the Atittude is a little better looking, but the Sky02X is not bad. The biggest weakness of these goggles is poor after-sale support.
The Commander V1S has the worst build quality of the bunch. It also has pretty poor image quality (even though on paper its resolution is better). Many people have popped up in the comments to say that Aomway does a decent job at after-sale support, even selling spare parts to repair damaged goggles. So Aomway gets credit for that, even though I think the actual goggle is the worst of the bunch.

If I were to rank these goggles, I think the Sky02X or the Attitude V5 would come out on top, depending on whether you value Fat Shark's great after-sale support and the OLED image vs. the SkyZone's feature set.

PS: Here are a few questions that people asked in the comments...
If I have the DomV3, should I upgrade to the Attitude V5?
In my opinion, the Attitude V5 is not a $300 upgrade over the DomV3. If you have a DomV3, and you are thinking of spending $300 on an Attitude V5, sell the DomV3 for as much as you can get, and use that money to help you get up to the price of an HDO instead. But by the time you put a module in the HDO's, you'll have spent nearly $600, so maybe just keep the DomV3.
What about the HD3?
HD3 is discontinued and not widely available. If you can find an HD3 for $400 new, or for about $350 or less used in good condition, I would take that over an Attitude V5. Although the HD3 doesn't have an OLED screen, it has a much larger FOV and higher resolution. Personally I think the HD3 is one of the best values in FPV goggles today, especially if you were to find it used for about $300.

These kinda summaries are awesome. It means I can get the TLDW high level points and if I want more detail, I can watch the video. Sure you don’t get the revenue from YouTube but hey - that’s why I support you on Patreon. Keep up the amazing work JB

2019-06-13 19:06:00 +0000 UTCGood information. Thanks. My son in law is in the market for goggles at the $300 level. As much as I like my ev200d goggles I think he should look into these Fatshark's. My ev200d have little resale value and no support.

2019-06-13 18:52:43 +0000 UTCI wonder why a few of the guys at uav futures didn’t seem impressed with the screen even not guessing it was oled?
