Discord Server?

Some of you found out today that I'm setting up a Discord server. This happened because I accidentally activated Patreon integration and all of my Patrons with a Discord account were automatically invited to the server. 

Unfortunately, the server is not ready to go live yet, so I have kicked you all out. Please don't take it personally. You'll get right back in when it's ready.

This raises the question ... am I moving away from Slack to Discord? And the answer is, probably yes. I have been using Discord for the Kwad Camp Online project and I'm really impressed with how easy it is to integrate it into other platforms like Patreon, Twitch, and YouTube. In addition, Discord is a free service that will archive our messages without bugging us for subscription fees (Slack subscription would cost us about $1000 / month no joke).  Discord also allows for role-based permissions, which mean that I can finally tag moderators or special contributors to particular channels to give recognition to those who are going above and beyond in helping out.

One of the biggest motivators for me moving to Discord is that Discord has voice chat rooms, which will make it easier than ever for me to hang out with you guys in real time. Right now I have a Zoom room, but in order to use it, I have to set it up, then announce that I'm in it, then you all have to download Zoom and join in. With Discord, we'll already all be here whenever I decide to pop in. Additionally, you can use voice chat rooms to chat with each other if you like.

For those who love Slack and hate Discord, I'm sorry... I don't think it best serves everyone to divide my attention between a Slack and Discord server.  And the community is strongest when everyone is part of the same platform instead of two different platforms.

Time frame for this transition is ... whenever it's ready. Until then, I'll still be in Slack just like always.
