I think I have a pretty good idea what song this was prepping you for and I can't wait. You're actually pretty on the mark about Wario being an evil doppelganger of Mario, or at least that's how he started. He was a straight-up villain in his first few appearances (starting with Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins) but then proved popular enough to get his own games, the first of which even sold under the premise that you're playing as the bad guy and only out for your own greed. A gold statue of Princess Peach has been stolen by pirates and Wario is going after it, not out of any sense of heroics, but so he can ransom it back to the Mushroom Kingdom for his personal gain. Wario mellowed out a bunch since, becoming more of a rival than a villain, but his greed and selfishness remain core parts of his character. In Wario Land 4 for instance, he's again out just to get rich by pilfering a lost pyramid for all he can get his grubby hands on. Sure, he ends up defeating a demon and saving a cursed princess by the end, but that wasn't the goal. The demon was just standing between him and the treasure. That's how it tends to go with Wario. Anything altruistic he does is mostly by happenstance when the Venn diagram of "saving the world" and "getting filthy rich" happen to align. Gameplay-wise, the first Wario Land started out as a deliberate parody of Mario. Instead of jumping on enemies, Wario shoulder-barges through them. Instead of eating mushrooms to grow bigger, Wario eats garlic. Instead of collecting coins to get extra lives, Wario hoards every one of them and uses them to buy his own castle at the end. (Or his own PLANET, should you be thorough enough, but the castle is what stuck.) The series gradually developed more of its own identity since, but like I said, the theme of greed very much remained.
