For some context on partners in time: Yes, time travel is a big part and the plot does involve the mushroom kingdom being invaded by a *very aggressive alien species. The mario and luigi rpgs were made by a now defunct group called AlphaDream and they had quite a bit of leeway so these games tended to be more story heavy and darker in nature, with this one being the darkest. The final boss theme is melancholy bc its the brothers (last defense for the planet) and the "queen" of the invaders (who at this point is the technical last standing attacking force). So no matter which side wins, the other side is doomed to extinction..
