You speculated a bit about MS-DOS: Jazz Jackrabbit definitely isn't your first exposure to it, you've done At Doom's Gate from Doom 1.
Command & Conquer was also MS-DOS, but that was using CD-style digital audio instead of the distinctive arrangement style of a PC MIDI card.

Yay! Senpai noticed me! At least that's what I assume, seeing my suggestion here, and as the penultimate entry, no less. Since you already saw footage, I'll divulge some general info on Borderlands:
These games are basically 50:50 shooter/RPG hybrids. The frame is FPS, but there are character levels, skill trees, special abilities, equipment slots, randomly generated loot, big story with tons of side missions, exploration of big open areas. Also, tons of very, very dark humor. They are definitely a lot of fun to play.
