Castlevania II: Simon's Quest - Bloody Tears

Comments

I know I’m a bit late to post but since I’m currently working my way on beating a bunch of Castlevania games (namely the 2D ones) I’ll chime in here instead of YouTube. πŸ˜‹ (At the moment, I recently beaten the first GB game.) Despite not playing much of the Castlevania games growing up, I am familiar with this track and after actually playing the game this originally came from, I’ve a new appreciation for this song. It really hypes you up and grooves on the longer you listen to it. 😁 Haunted Castle Revisited so far has the best official remix of Bloody Tears, in my humblest of opinions. Thankfully, both Haunted Castle games are short gaming sessions so I could sprint to the next Castlevania game. 😏

The version of Bloody Tears that I only quite recently learned about was the version from Castlevania Legends for the Game Boy. That one is honestly a really good remix of the NES theme.

It's not that unusual for a long-running series to have a fighting game. Final Fantasy has Dissidia, I know that the "Tales of" series has one, possibly more fighting games, it happens. Never played Castlevania Judgment, but from what I remember, most of the OST are remixes of classic CV themes like this one. Vampire Killer is definitely also in there. Oh and a nice version of Bloody Tears is in a little indie game called Dead Cells, which coincidentally may be featured in my future requests. Basically, the game's devs are huge fans of CV, the game is definitely partly inspired by the series, and they somehow managed to secure an actual, official collab with Castlevania as a DLC. So their composer got Konami's blessing to remix some of the classics for the game. I can't even imagine what that feels like to a little-known indie game composer like Yoann "Valmont" Laulan.

For me, the NES version of Bloody Tears still feels like the "real" version. The way it harmonizes on top of the super-simple NES triangle wave bass is so elegant. The very first Bloody Tears was for the Famicom Disk System version of CV2 (Japan-only, NES add-on that used floppy disks instead of cartridges). When they ported it from there to the regular NES, they had to reduce the number of sound channels it used, and in my opinion that change streamlined it into a better version than the FDS one. Early Castlevania games had quite a few composers. The big two tracks, Vampire Killer and Bloody Tears, weren't even the same composer as each other! Michiru Yamane came in late in the 16-bit era, after most of the series motifs had already had their first appearance, and then stayed with the series through the rest of the 2D games and into Bloodstained.

There are SO MANY remixes of this song. But the one from judgement is definitely a really good one.
