Civilization IV / VI - Zulu / Baba Yetu

Had me contemplating my existence.

Civilization IV / VI - Zulu / Baba Yetu

Comments

Civilization IV really earned a place in my heart back when it was new and I was a teenager. Baba Yetu - but also the rest of the soundtrack is really, really great. And I loved to play that game. Sadly I couldn't say the same for V - and I think I never played part VI. But remembering the time in CIV IV, when I built my nation of culture and science, not investing anything in war, taking over cities peacefully because they are in the shadow of my megacities - and finally building the united nations and declaring victory without fighting even once :D Ah.. this game is nostalgia. And as I said before, that intro was sooo amazing.

This has been "Philosophy with Jesse" XD I've got some useful notes for you: — Baba Yetu is from Civ 4 (IV), not 6 (VI) — "Baba Yetu" means "Our Father". The lyrics are the Lord's Prayer in Swahili. — Wikipedia: "Zulu people are a native people of Southern Africa of the Nguni. The Zulu people are the largest ethnic group and nation in South Africa, with an estimated 13.56 million people, living mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal." The Zulu clan was founded in 1574, but they were part of a larger group of various clans that go thousands of years into the past. — The tongue clicks are not percussion, they're actually part of the Zulu language. A lot of African native languages use them. — Sid Meyer is the original author of the Civilization series. — The genre the Civilization games belong to is called 4X, and stands for "Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate". You don't just build a park or a city, you build an empire. You start by picking a nation, then you're thrown into 4000 BCE, in a random corner of a randomly generated map, with just a few tribespeople at your disposal. You find a good spot, found your first settlement, and then go from there. You look for resources, grow your settlements and build new ones, fend off barbarians and other nations, research technology, do diplomacy, build grand monuments, spread your cultural influence, and try to reach the modern era in one piece. The cool thing is that all the way since Civ 1, there have been multiple ways to win the game. Besides good ol' conquest, you can win by space exploration, by dominating culturally, by being so goddamn popular that you're peacefully elected as the president of the world, etc.
