Metroid Prime - Phendrana Drifts / Crashed Frigate Orpheon

Metroidvania, baby!

This game is basically a 3D Symphony of the Night but in the sci-fi genre. Basically exploring a planet, so lots of cool environments.

The crashed frigate orpheon is a space station the slammed into the planet Tallon IV, causing a massive crater that filled in with water. This level is the first area in the game but now submerged and destroyed. Given the fact that it was a research frigate, the comparisons to a submarine filled with gadgets is an apt one. So happy you listened to this.

One of the best parts about Metroid prime was its introductions to each of its areas. In Phendrana drifts you exit an elevator and walk into a frozen cavern that you traverse for a moment before exiting and seeing a beautiful panning shot of the snowy landscape and cliffs covered in ice set to this sweeping track, I remember the first moment I saw that almost 12 years ago. I recommend Metroid Prime to anyone, it is both a classic and a masterpiece. Most music in this game is played over exploration as all themes outside of bossfights play regardless of wether you are surveying the environment or fighting the mutated wildlife.

Also, one thing that’s super cool about Crashed Frigate Orpheon is that it’s the very first area in the game, and you visit the space station before it crashes, then it explodes and falls onto the planet. So when you locate it and find it submerged underwater, it’s the exact same area from the start of the game, but completely different, since you now have to navigate around it in odd angles and with increased underwater gravity. It’s a really cool game design choice for you to come back to it. It’s familiar, but completely different.

There’s still definitely icy winds in Phendrana, so it’s still a very valid take. And if I’m not mistaken, the area is located near the highest elevation in the game map. So you really weren’t far off.

to answer your question, the "Drifts" in the name refers to snow drifts! Metroid Prime is a very atmospheric and explorative game, there are enemies to fight regularly but the vibe is much more about discovering secrets and new paths. Also, Metroid games widely take place in natural settings, artifical areas are in the minority in this franchise.

Well.. I was half right on one of them haha

Two of the best atmospheric tracks in the game. If it wasn’t obvious from the sound profile, phendrana drifts is an icy frozen landscape, and frigate Orpheon is a submerged crashed ship.
