Hydrocity Zone is probably the holy grail of Sonic water levels. Sonic games are about speed, first and foremost, but water levels tend to take that away, change the physics, drive the gameplay to a halt. Not Hydrocity Zone. It's still a full-fledged water level: you go underwater, the slo-mo physics are there, and you still absolutely can fall to the classic Sonic drowning tune. But on the other hand, there's a lot of downward slopes and dash panels, so if you do it right, you can zoom through the level just like any other. Hydrocity Zone is also the first time Sonic runs on the surface of water, I believe. Sonic 3 was the first to have different songs for the two acts of a level. Mechanically, the biggest difference in Sonic 3 were elemental shields, which protect you from damage caused by their element (water shield prevents you from drowning, for example), plus they give you an extra movement ability when you press the jump button a second time in the air. Sonic Mania is basically a love letter to the original series. After some meh results with Sonic 4, they just went all the way back to the drawing board. Mania has a mix of old and new levels. You've heard one of the new ones, Studiopolis Act 1, which means that tune is a Tee Lopes original. Even with the returning levels, he usually does more remixing than this, especially in the Act 2 versions, he just stayed extra faithful in this particular case. And yes, he's a hardcore fan =) I love how he touched up the sound just enough that it both sounds clean and modern-quality, but still faithful to the overall feel of the Sega Genesis sound chip. As for how Sonic ended up in SSB, well, Sega dropped off the console race after Dreamcast, so they couldn't be a first-party developer anymore. That's the gist of it.

Whether this is due to allegations or just the often referenced fact of the genesis sound chip not being good enough for his vision I canβt say for certain. Angel island zone is the first level of sonic 3 and it is lit on fire in the second act.
