Coalescence plays on the ‘Finale’ level of Risk of Rain, the level that shares its name with the game itself. Unlike the faster paced or more intense themes for other stages, Coalescence takes a melancholy and reflective vibe even as the action is at its most intense and insane. It creates an odd effect where you realize how far your character has been altered from what they started as, and how many bodies you have left in your wake. As you make your way through the crashed vessel that brought you to this planet where everything - everything - has abandoned all normal behavior and logic to focus on attacking you, as you walk forward to face the physical god who is identified as the ‘Protector of the Weak’, as you wonder what exactly you have done…. Chris has mentioned that for RoR1 at least, the music was composed independently of the game itself, the developers decided where to use it. The combination of this simple melody and the chaotic devastation surrounding it, brilliant composition matched with brilliant direction, has firmly lodged it into the mind of all players. Multiple songs in Risk of Rain 2, mostly those relating the final stage and boss there, make use of Coalescence as a leitmotif.
