More like leaves mind of that person completely open to Nightmare influence. Maybe that's how, in DK universe, people turn psychotic, or start exhibiting aberrant behavior like becoming serial killers and such as their unprotected minds get twisted and torn by an intruding Nightmare. Just my two cents on the matter.
