No problem!

It took me three days to get up the courage, time and tissues to watch this episode! I already knew how rough it was going to be. I would like to point out my favorite line in the closing scene however. We have just seen Cortazar being very excited about receiving the protomolecule sample on Laconia and he looks up in the sky at ?? some amazing structure (hope you can rewatch the credits at some point...) but Sauveterre says to Emily: "we won't have a civilian world to cushion us, Dishonorable discharge will be a bullet, or worse". Say what?? Hope you are feeling better Greg, this show has changed all of our lives and completely for the better!! On to S6.

Etta Eskridge

Ok I won't say anything about books 7-9 but I hope Greg reads them because it will help him heal. After all my love for this show, its actually book 8 that remains my favorite! Someday....

Etta Eskridge

Wow, thanks! That is super great of you to do that. Looking forward to what it was supposed to be. I will never stop loving the sweetly flawed character of Alex Kamal!

Etta Eskridge

Just as an FYI, I posted a Drive link in a new comment above with the PDF of the script.

If anyone wants to see what the episode script looked like prior to Cas Anvar's firing, I scanned and uploaded a copy of the script I bought from a store that sold Expanse props (I am not the crew-member watermarked on the pages). See link below, which should be public. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GQCJR6IV3UcKhsSSMV7Mrz6Gcvbb_QcA?usp=sharing The Naomi rescue part begins at page 19.

Varun Laks

Agreed, and I definitely recommend reacting to them along with the episodes, if you can. Regardless, I recommend watching them, for sure.

Eric Elliott

I know this episode is hard to watch. While the real world implications of Cas Anvar's actions forever changed the story of of the show, they managed to take the lemons, and it turned to lemonade. While it may be a bit of an unpopular opinion, I actually found the death of a key player to be a stroke of inspiration- I have read the books as well, and while I love where they go, the lack of serious consequences for the crew in the long term never felt as right as it could have been...

Matt Drahos

I hated Oksana from the get go. Always trying to manipulate and change the person that Drummer is while using her love as a bargaining chip/guilt trip. Absolutely despicable behavior. I hate her as much as Marco.

Beat Conductor

I completely disagree per my above.

Erasure25

Oksana is one of the most appalling characters for me; selfrightous, spineless Belter. Blaming Drummer all the way and rather ally with a mass murderer of unknown scale. The guy who attacked Drummer should have been shot on the spot or spaced right after and Oksana thrown out at the next station/planet - not given a ship. Marco killed Serge in a classic hostage situation, but it is probably Belter culture so nothing to criticise, right? That's how they form new families, if nothing goes wrong, of course. Anyhow, yes, Serge was loved by them; hence, they should have been outraged that Marco killed him just to send a message; but no, only Drummer gets critized and they run away instead of pulling together. Oksana is one major example why the Belt is failing as a faction, the side that looks away and shys away from responsibility; so is Marco for not being able to let go of the hate or all the pirates for their own selfish interests. Nothing like Ashford, who transcended the hate and his pirate life, or Champa, who understood sacrifice and doing the right thing, Josep for seeing the big picture, finding the strength to do the right thing and support Drummer, or even Drummer herself, who is still struggling but doing what is right and not looking away from what she does. F*** Oksana

Only 6 episodes left, brother. Like others have said please be sure to watch the X-Ray shorts in season 6. Episodes 1-5 have them but not 6. Would love to see your reaction to them.

"The Expanse is very very very good and I hate it." Yeah. I feel that. Nothing is the same after The Expanse. This show moved the goal posts in a big way for me.

Beat Conductor

I gave you that cw for ep.9 but it should have been ep.10 It's super rough, especially paired with Naomi's rescue.

LightningInvoker

At the end of the credits, it shows that alien structure in orbit over Laconia 'wake up' with blue light.

LightningInvoker

Please avoid book spoilers

Super tough episode. <3

About the Drummer crew splitting, I think its difficult for us as viewers to understand because we didn't really know Serge, and thus we had to real feelings for him. But to Drummer's crew, they were a family and to them, Serge was just as loved as Drummer. I look at it as Oksana basically believes that Drummer cares for Naomi (who is not in their family) more than she cares about her family members and was willing to sacrifice Serge to save Naomi. And that's why Oksana was like there's nothing to stay together for. For me, I understand her reactions and decisions.

I bought it off ebay, along with the script for episode 508. There's a seller that's selling a bunch of props (different group than PropStore). He was selling all the Season 5 scripts. I think all the scripts are now sold, but theres still a bunch of other props on there for anyone that wants to snag anything (they are smaller and a bit cheaper props than the type of stuff that was sold at the Propstore auction). I can probably scan the script, and then dm it here to anyone that asks. I'll try and do it this weekend. I would just upload it as a comment, but I dont want to get this channel in trouble or the crewmember in trouble, just in case someone doesn't want it out for some reason.

Varun Laks

Dang, is that script available anywhere on the internet?

Roger Kingsland

I'd forgotten about that - thanks for the reminder.

Aquitaine

Never apologize for feeling your feelings! We were all you when we watched this epi for the first time - blindsided, gutted, angry, snotty-sob ugly-crying... we felt it too. I felt it again rewatching it with you (for the umpteenth time) and possibly even HARDER this time ๐Ÿ˜ญ

There's an amazing battle breakdown video on youtube that talks about the fight with the Roci and Drummer/Koto/Serrio Mal. There's so much more going on in the battle than meets the eye. Lots of unsaid tactics and split-second decisions. It doesn't have any spoilers for Season 6. https://youtu.be/h1AEHK8oQeA?si=2kepyLGvmuHxicuU

As others have said, the allegations about the actor who played Alex became public while filming of this season was underway. If I remember correctly the show opened their own investigation, came to a conclusion you can pretty well guess at given what followed, and then rewrote and reshot the end of the season. I think they did a really great job making it all work and much prefer killing off the character rather than trying to recast for one season, but it does mean this is where the books and the show diverge in a pretty major way.

Aquitaine

I was worried that was coming soon. I couldn't remember how long their deal with Amazon was for but I knew it came with a time limit.

Aquitaine

Iโ€™ve been dreading this episode for you once I saw how much you really enjoyed the Alex character.

Crissy Brashear

Fuck I knew this was coming and ever since you started talking about Alex being the soul of the ship... I know everyone will jump to post about the actor, but side stepping that for a moment, it doesn't leave me sad. The character was amazingly written. It's something I've always found incredible about how deep and rich the worldbuilding is. Like you said many times "There are no small parts in The Expanse." Everyone is so interesting. And I love that because Alex Kamal lives on in that. This finale was tough, not because it wasn't enjoyable but because it almost has a The Empire Strikes Back kinda vibe. The setup for the villain to win. And it resolves sides a little more clearly. Until this point you could almost forgive people for siding with The Free Navy. You could see the point of view of Martians that wanted to breathe air on a planet that was their own after a lifetime under domes. But this finale was a series of shots that were heard around the system that this is no longer a series of attacks from a disorganized faction. This is war. And it's with these emotions, it's not a cold one anymore. Marco has cost us Alex, Ashford, Arjun, Fred and his dreams for Tycho, Cyn, Filips soul, Drummers family, Naomi's peace, Earths agriculture and 1499 other habitable systems, millions of lives and ships, the ring fleet, the MCR Parliament, Nancy Gao and most of the earth cabinet, Martian hope and honor, the Augustin Gamarra and probably more that I can't think of. I hate him so fucking much. But great actor. What a season. What a finale. I hope you're ok mate. This was a rough one. But don't lose hope. The black is a big strange place and we haven't seen the half it by any measure. And if this episode left you on the drift, I promise you there's a whole fleet of ships watching along with you. Send any one of us a tight beam and you'll find yourself one of the crew. Fly safe space cowboy.

Joshua

I've been looking forward to this episode for such a long time. Such a great way to cap off what I think is one of the best seasons of TV in recent memory. I've said it before, this season felt like cinema. The scene with the rescue of Naomi was so great. The drama, desperation, the stakes, and how they filmed her just tumbling and losing air until the clunk of Bobbi catching her...perfection! And hats off to the music department. All season long, whenever key moments came up, they found the right way to use music to add to the tension, action, or whatever else was needed to tell the story. I was glad they had Amos' pivotal moment in episode 9. I think it would have been a bit too much to add to this episode, and honestly, the pacing worked out that it fit well there. And I really enjoyed the journey of Clarissa this season. Totally unexpected, but good to see. Finally, the Martian separatists. The show laid the groundwork for this in season 4, and it all became clear. It was all purely transactional, not ideological. The Martians heading to Laconia wanted the protomolecule. In exchange for that, they armed Marco to the teeth to be able to hold his ground while the system was in disarray. The Martians didn't make any notion stop at Medina once they made Ring Space. And then yes, space monsters. The bear we saw being poked in seasons 3 and 4. Love this season. Love this show!

David Schafer

It also shows as leaving soon in the UK :(

As a heads up for Season 6, Amazon did this weird "Prime XRay" thing with all but the last episode to promote their new XRay thing that never took off. Basically each episode but the last has a hidden mini-episode that you can watch. None of them are important to the overall plot, but they're all interesting, solid looks at the characters and their motivations. I feel like they add a lot of depth to the season, and give it a chance to breathe while the show is jam-packed trying to get everything done in only six episodes. You can only watch them in a desktop browser. Go into an episode > bring up the menu > hit X-ray > scroll over to Bonus Content > select the minisode.

Josh M

I can't watch this reaction just yet, but I'm always interested to hear what people have to say with this episode. As I'm sure you've heard by now, Alex had to be written out due to the actions of Cas Anvar. They had to reshoot multiple scenes, and the tone of the episode was almost entirely changed. I actually own the script to the original version of this episode, and it's very interesting to compare the two. And I actually prefer the final version we got. While it's sad to lose Alex, I think a loss like this is a very good cap on this darker season which has been all about loss and survival. I think having a principal character die, crystallizes how dangerous the things these characters do really are, and makes those themes of survival that much more powerful. While the execution may not have been perfect (although under the circumstances, were honestly pretty great), I think thematically it works much better this way.

Varun Laks

Prime Canada shows it as leaving soon... Don't know if it's true, but luckily I already have a physical copy

HollisHenry

Just an FYI, but some have reported that The Expanse is leaving Prime in February. I don't see that on my end, in the US, but people shared screenshots of a notice on the website that said it was leaving.

PapaXan

Alex was written out of the show after the season was shot due to the actor having some inappropriate behavior with the ladyโ€™s. Alex did not die in the book, nor was he going to die in the show. They killed him off in post production. Very sad. Bit season 6 is still great!
