And remember Naomi's words from S1E4 when they're about to run out of air in the holding cell on the Donnager, "I didn't even get to say 'goodbye'". She has finally said goodbye to Filip.

If you back up to the whole web site it shows scenes from Episodes and seasons he has not reached yet. I would love to get a cup some day, I just know Greg doesn't want to see anything that gives away the future episodes.

Cyn's actor made his part so big. So full. When he confessed I remember feeling actually betrayed. Like someone that I'd known for years of my life had done something unspeakable to me. He conveys such emotion. There's that saying in acting "There are no small parts, only small actors." This show has no small actors. Every part is a performance of its own. I also really liked that this episode really gave the family room to breathe. Marco's continued spiral. It's something interesting that I find about him. When he is feigning being sad, he's cold. But when he's actually upset, he is hot if that makes sense? He trembles when he is angry. And I don't really feel that Marco feels sadness or anger that Naomi left him. To me he seems humiliated. If you fill in the gaps of how early into Marco's legend Naomi comes in, there's a the suggestion that a group of young orphans (or to use the beloved D&D metaphors, a low level party of adventurers) that collected with similar ideals. But we can assume that maybe they were not all radicalized at that point. As in most adventuring party's founding, a leader emerges from their ranks. Someone who chases plot. Marco envisions making real changes in the belt, so he convinces the others to plan something small perhaps. They skirt the law or cause real trouble, but we can infer from how Naomi has referenced Augustin Gamarra incident that he made her into a killer in that moment by modifying the code. And so, the party get to this decision and he makes the leap to say "We're choosing violence and we're declaring ourselves at war with the inners. And it seems that rest of the party went along (although perhaps some who go unmentioned are killed by Marco and his loyalists), but Naomi left. And he is humiliated that after all the times we can assume he manipulated others to take a step more towards his own kingdom, all those followers who worship him, Naomi was the first to ever tell him "No", and the second she's back, others start to remember that he's not a god, he's just a man and that he can be wrong. Earlier today I watched a really interesting video about a psychiatrist who specializes in Cult Deprogramming and in it he answered a few questions, one of them being "How do you identify what is a cult?". He gave a brilliant answer that broke it down into the following: 1. A group that has a totalitarian leaders that is the defining element and driving force of the group. And that leader becomes an object of worship. 2. The leader uses identifiable techniques of coercive persuasion to gain undue influence. 3. Having acquired undue influence the leader uses it to exploit and do harm to his or her followers. In the context of a ttrpg, he's a cult leader (bard) that has coerced members from some of the parties backstory to turn to his cause and founded his own religion (though they call themselves The Free Navy, people chant Inaros, their enemies call them The Inaros faction) and is using that influence to ascend to the heavens as a god (a master of a thousand worlds with the power to isolate entire systems). And he knows the power of isolation. If Marco controlled the ring space, he'd be able to isolate entire star systems. He'd be able to do to planets, what he did to Filip and Naomi. The writing in this show is so god damned good, this universe is so rich and good at telling peoples stories in. I only hope someday I'll be able to play in it. If only there was someone out there who was looking to run an Expanse TTRPG? :O

"He's all the things you pretend to be." Marco does such a great job of 'playing hurt' but you can see it now. Pretty boys not so pretty when the smile is gone and he hears the word "No." from the people that are keeping him in power. Such a phenomenal episode.

Great photo! Thanks for putting in the link.

As others have said, I think this episode is a dark horse candidate for best episode across the series. It's certainly up there in the top 10 for me. It's the type of episode that sets The Expanse apart from other shows. It feels like the story is setting up a somewhat predictable arc where Naomi and Filip escape right under Marco’s nose, with Cyn heroically sacrificing himself to cover their getaway. Every reactor I’ve seen, and everyone I’ve watched this episode with (myself included), expects that the entire time. And then as the show always does, it pulls the rug from under all of us. The show doesn't give Naomi that win, (although it does of course give her a different kind of triumphant win at the very end). One thing to keep in mind is that Marco has a huge advantage—he’s had years to know what makes Filip tick. Marco is the one who shaped Filip into who he is. While Naomi does make progress with Filip and genuinely reaches him, it’s just not enough to break Marco’s hold. An absent parent, no matter how righteous she is, can’t overturn years of influence with just a couple of conversations. Marco is really good at knowing what makes each person tick. One of my favorite things about Keon Alexander’s performance is how he adjusts his tone depending on who he’s talking to, tailoring his approach to manipulate them effectively. With Filip, Marco uses tough love because he knows Filip is desperate for his approval. One of the most underrated lines in this episode is Filip telling Marco, “I want you to be proud of me,” and Marco coldly responding, “I know”—and not in a Han Solo kind of way, either lol. Later Marco essentially tells Filip that he's been fucking up since bringing Naomi on board, and if Filip corrects that error, then he can get the approval that he's been craving. It's an abuse tactic and he knew exactly what he was doing that entire scene with Filip at his command deck. As you said, everyone is great in this episode, but Keon Alexander and Dominique Tipper really knocked it out of the park. It's a little funny to think that they were close friends even before he was cast as Marco. Here's a fun picture of Keon Alexander and Dominique Tipper at Cara Gee's wedding sometime around the filming of Season 3: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FIx7xLgVUAA9o6E.jpg

Definitely my second fav episode after Home. Was waiting for this one. I really liked your predictions but its amazing how much we all underestimate the women in this show. They are all just stunning and strong. Naomi looks at Cyn with all the calmness she can muster knowing she is doing the only thing she can do. She is not an emotional wreck, she is poised and knows exactly what to do and she is in charge. LOVE Naomi so much!!

Probably my favorite episode in the series for emotion and tension. The performances across the board are out of this world! The scene with Cen and Naomi where he tells her he helped Marco brings a tear to my eye every time. What a show!

Brad Johnson

As others have said (including you), the acting I this show - particularly this season - is truly outstanding. A lot of us feel it's criminal the show never received any awards.

Oh man oh man "Oyedeng"...the episode that hits like a ton of bricks after already being absolutely riddled in episodes 3 "Mother" and 4 "Gaugamela" (don't you love the titles that are so fitting for these mega jaw dropping episodes)! Don't think one could be on edge any harder than seeing Naomi jumping from the Pella.

Shawn Anomaly

Thank you, my friend!

Fury Roll

Even having watched the episode more than a few times, I still have my heart racing at the final sequence.

Nitish S

Dominic Tipper absolutely smashes this season. She is simply amazing.

While it's not exactly the cup from the episode, but there is this. https://creatorink.com/collections/the-expanse/products/the-expanse-rocinante-mcrn-cup I've been waiting for this one for a while. 5x04 is shocking and wild, but this one is intensely personal, and also has the best human exposed to vacuum scene in all of sci-fi.

Beat Conductor

Pronounced “oh-dang” - the “e” is silent. Means goodbye or farewell.

One of the many episodes that makes season 5 my favorite
