Spock said that intelligence wins over because he understood what would happen when Kirk's two parts would be put back together suddenly. Spock has his own personal battle between Human and Vulcan and he stated that his intelligence is what makes it possible to manage.

I'm pleased she lived to be 92 (died in 2005) so lived to see how huge Star Trek became and how enjoyed that theme is :)
