The Expanse 2x3 - 'Static' FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

I guess Miller knows what he's looking for

The Expanse 2x3 - 'Static' FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

Just to add to your comment on Julie and Miller: When Julie is in her room in the Blue Falcon, dying, she sees Dawes on TV saying "give the Martians their water", (Miller was nearby when he says that) now why would she see that? It was not televised news... My thought is that the writers are trying to draw connections between Julie and Miller that we don't fully understand fueled by the protomolecule and the bird is somehow a conduit between them. Miller sees the bird outside Julie's apartment. The bird is preceding Miller into the Blue Falcon when Miller appears with the necklace and the hat. None of this really makes sense to our senses so to speak. That does indeed highlight the alien nature of the PM. I am LOVING your reactions BTW, so intelligent and perceptive. Keep going!! So many more great things to come!

Ty and Daniel have both said that Holden was the toughest character to write for. I won't go into details about why that was here, to avoid possible spoilers.

Can't say Holden's reaction was overreaction IMHO. To me him practically wanting to beat Miller's ass made perfect sense for the person he is in response to murder. He explains his viewpoint to Naomi. His reaction is actually reinforced in another place. Now imagine letting that all out against the person who is guilty of that incident. Just like he stated, not only did people die for that mission but they themselves damn near died. Don't think anyone is taking that lightly or quietly when someone goes off making a solo massive decision like Miller did. I've seen far more intense yelling/shouting over issues FAR LESS important issues than executing someone.

Looking back, I guess it wasn't until the opening scene in the next episode that I fully appreciate it was the Thoth battle ship coordinates Fred sent.

Remember the last thing Julie saw before she died? Miller walking in wearing his hat (which he left on Ceres) holding her necklace and the bird was flying next to him. Now Miller is seeing Julie. What's up with that!? Interesting tidbit about Mormons, Nauvoo is a city in Illinois where all the Mormons used to live. The neighboring towns / cities got pissed at them for some reason and kicked them out and that's why they headed west and ended up settling in Utah. The Authors love referencing old / ancient stories, characters, mythologies, and civilizations. Josephus Miller for instance, Josephus was a historical figure who was considered a traitor to his people and in mathematics there is something called "the Josephus problem", you can go down that rabbit hole if you want. There are plenty of gems like this throughout the show if you're willing to dig a little bit, ship names, places that events happen, book titles. The authors are total nerds and it adds so much depth. I love it.

LOL, when he said he was going to make his predictions I thought "don't even try dude"! but go ahead and watch the show blast them away! haha

Not for nothing, it took me many rewatches to realize that the ship Fred Johnson sent Chrisjen was the ship in the battle for Thoth station. I just could not compute that for some reason! Just wanted to point out that the voices on Eros are made a huge deal of in the book! It is very spooky and its hard to convey that in the show. There was a brief scene in the middle of this episode where they show Eros and you can hear weird voices coming off the station saying weird things. But I do love Cortazar (the scientist) when he says "the Universe just kissed me on the cheek"! He is pretty spooky too!

My paranoia for Octavia is REAL :D I haven't picked up the TTRPG for that very reason, my friend :) I am trying my very best to avoid even the possibility of spoilers. Appreciate the heads-up on episodes 4 and 5! Definitely planning on watching both in one sitting. And thank you for the kind words...means the world!

Fury Roll

Will do, my friend! Thank you for looking out!

Great reaction as always. I highly recommend watching the next 2 episodes together as they are the conclusion of 1 of the books and are definitely something that should be watched together.

StefanV

I feel like Holden's 'overreaction' comes from a bit of over-acting from Steven Strait? I think his anger makes sense but it's the screaming that makes you go 'wow, chill' lol

LightningInvoker

I thought the books were fantastic, and made me appreciate the show even more. Their decision to condense the plot but expand it in other areas was A++ and a masterclass in book-to-tv adaptation.

LightningInvoker

I think we can now talk about it: I absolutely loved your take on Octavia being a spy for Dawes. It'd have been a great plot. But if I remember correctly her character wasn't even in the books... Holden's reaction at the start of the episode has always seemed weird to me. He's overreacting way too much. In an otherwise perfect show, this is still one of this weird writing choice I can't wrap my head around lol. As for Alex, you're totally right about his state of mind. But at the same time I love seeing him train. Because we see way too many pilots in movies or tv shows who are just incredible, some without any previous training at all (ok sometimes it's because of the Force, but come on). Alex isn't the best pilot in the system for no reason. He obsessively trained. And without spoiling anything I'll just say we can see the results in the future. Anyway, great reaction, as always! It's so great to experience a "new first time" through your eyes. The discoveries about what the protomolecule is and what it does, the characters developing, this show is a gem. You've already been warned that episode 4 and 5 are the end of the first book. I strongly suggest you watch them both on one sitting. It's absolutely necessary for your own sanity. PS: Also I wanted to say: If you already bought The Expanse TTRPG I hope you haven't read too much yet, you might spoil yourself from a lot of things. I'd say wait at least until season 4 before reading it.

Blackd0nuts

As all-life-long sci-fi reader it pains me to say it, but in case of the Expanse novels, the show is actually even little better, in my opinion then the books are. Not that the books were bad, no way, but both authors had a chance to improve their storylines in the series and I think they did excellent job. To be completly honest I started to like the books while/after reading the book three.

Lukas Rapouch

Another great reaction :-) Ahead lays 2 parter book ONE finale. And Lord you have something to look forward to. In our journey together I got to know you a little and let me say this, YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MIND :-D !!! Better prepare yourself for mind bending finale and believe me you can not anticipate what is going to happen, so try to enjoy it as much as you can. SO much looking forward to it, until then happy Easter and see you in one week. (perhaps on double episode reaction? God I wish...)

Miller knows that if anyone gets their hands on the protomolecule it'll be lights out for Belters first, as he was saying to Diogo. Executing Dresden for 'making sense' is his way of saying someone else WILL take up the mantle of the project and people will die. He knows that others WILL believe that killing hundreds to millions of people in the name of human advancement is justified, and he won't let that happen. Miller's always been out for the 'little guy', lol, whether that's himself or all Belters. That's how I see it. And I think Amos's tactic shows that there's no reasoning with "these people". I wouldn't be too concerned about following the books on this, in all honesty. Other than informing you when certain arcs end in what episodes (as they don't do part 1/2 designations) the show differs from the books in a LOT of respects. The books don't matter until you read them :)

LightningInvoker

Right! I just finished editing 1x9 and realized I had misremember the contents of Fred's public statement. Really appreciate you looking out, my friend!

Fury Roll

Nice reaction. Just one slight clarification: the data Fred sent to Chrisjen was NOT from Lopez. It was data about the ship the Roci defeated during the attack on Thoth Station (where they captured the scientist). In fact, he already sent her - and everyone - the data from Lopez when he attached it to his broadcast message saying the engines were built by Earth at the Bush Shipyards.
