The Expanse 1x8 - 'Salvage' FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

That is really neat, I didn't know that. Good thing they didn't learn his inability to finish a series, baaahahaha

Well, it's very interesting to know that Ty Franck, one of the two authors of the books (they also did work on the show), was George RR Martin's assistant for some years. And the books are very much the same structurally: They start with a supernatural (here technological-ish) threat that's revealed in the first sequence then never mentioned until way later in the season; the books are written in 3rd person character POVs, etc. So a lot of similarities if not for the genre^^ Edit: Dang I forgot, we can even see Ty Franck as an extra on this episode when Miller arrives on Eros!

Blackd0nuts

HaHa No doubt, my friend! This world is so established and 'lived in'. I want to know everything about it :)

Fury Roll

You: "I like this show so much, I like the docking procedures". Man, you are going to have a field day with the political negotiations, union deliberations and import/export logistics.

Aldo Cassola

Oh I see so I was wrong in my assumption then, thanks for the clarification :)

Florian

I'm the complete opposite. I tend to not share too much about the media I enjoy, because if I recommend something to someone and they don't like it I take it VERY personally, LMAO!

LightningInvoker

Great reaction, yet again! I just love and appreciate your commentary on everything. Man, GoT sure was something.. I think just because of the two genres, I find it hard to compare the two, but I know how you feel. I feel like a lot of people have forgotten how good those first few seasons of GoT were after being let down by the latter ones. The show definitely takes off and goes places after this episode. Things are going to get fuckin wild. I know that a lot of people don't like the paladin nature of Holden. They see him as a 'the guy who can do no wrong', which I disagree with. That big sense of right and wrong, moral code, the drive to protect the innocent from those who abuse power. He's also very driven by his emotions which is why he has trouble trusting Amos, lol. I believe 'you' said it perfectly, "That's the difference between you and me. You have a heart." xD I can't wait for you to learn even more about Amos.

LightningInvoker

When Holden speaks to Amos before boarding the Anubis, he tells him "if he (Kenzo) so much as breaks a toe nail, you (Amos) are hitchhiking off this rock". Holden is having trouble trusting Amos because he doesn't understand him (yet).

I feel your pain Daxeah. I have to keep my love of the show under wraps because some of my family have not given it a full try yet, and I can't believe there are people walking around this planet who have not had the great privilege of seeing this show! I love this episode when those two story lines come together. You have a count down clock running and at 19:38 both of the book writers, Ty Frank and Daniel Abraham have a little cameo walking into Eros station just ahead of Miller. Ty has the long hair! Just a little Easter Egg to point out! Ty and Daniel (aka James SA Corey) were in the writers room for the entire TV series, one of the reasons the show is as fantastic as it turned out to be.

I'm sure you've already heard some form of this a million times already but... 1) Season 1 is the "slow season" 2) Probably not as much this one, but... Musically I really didn't take notice till Season 3 or 4 (I really fell in love with the show/found it a bit before season 4 released) and I listen to it pretty much nonstop now πŸ˜… 3) I'm REALLY enjoying your insight. I'm a gamer but never been a TTRPG player, so that extra insight is great (2 buddies who STILL haven't taken the plunge do D&D and I've added your comments about how you can see the influence to my "pestering", lol

Jason Dokos

Same :D I literally said...OUT LOUD at my office... 'Nope. I do NOT trust Octavia.' Luckily we do not have an Octavia in our office :D

Fury Roll

Honestly, I notice the score waaay more during editing. I get so focused on the episode, that everything else fades away apparently. Need to get better with that :)

Fury Roll

I was just as taken with the show. I still zone out thinking about it often and I think everyone irl is tired of me talking about it. Lmao

Daxeah

How much, if at all, have you noticed in the quality of the musical score? Season 1 music is good, but it just keeps building upon itself to amazing result season 2+

Jason Dokos

Look at The Expanse taking you over like it did for us all. You pretty much nailed it when it comes down to why we love the show so much. I can't think of anything before it or after that matches it. The only show that miraculously managed to nail the worldbuilding, details (you haven't even seen just how much details they pay off), the acting, the music (more sweet tunes to come), side characters, the story, the visuals, establishing shots, etc. etc. Another thing mentioned in a few other reaction channels is the big appreciation of how the characters were written to act like ADULTS and not the silly stuff that plagues many tv shows/movies where adults act like teens (not counting comedy stuff where it's meant to be over the top)! Cant' wait to see you react to 1x9 and 1x10! As another comment stated..The Expanse just explodes from this point forward!

Shawn Anomaly

Great reaction, as usual. Your comments about Kenzo are interesting. His character doesn’t appear in the books, but was created for the show to provide some exposition. Fun fact: Elias Toufexis (Kenzo) was considered for the role of Amos along Wes Chatham. The producers say they were the only two who understood the character.

T. Arnold Ferguson

S2E4 and S2E5, got it! Thank you for the heads-up. I will try and schedule enough time to tackle them both! Appreciate everything, my friend!

Fury Roll

Another great reaction! GoT was the one series that toped everything for me when I saw it, it set such high standards that I couldn't watch anything else and feel the same as I did with GoT. Then I watched The Expanse and I had the same feeling again, even more because I love good Sci-Fi. The attention to detail, the realism, the writing, the way it's shot, the acting... everything is sooo well done. I couldn't even watch Season 6 until now because if I do, it's over and I don't want it to end! I'm not sure if you misunderstood Holden when he talked to Amos before the boarding of the Anubis. I think he noticed the value of a crewmember like Amos, if you have someone you don't trust on board, so he told him to watch Kenzo and kill him if he tries something. Also Holden was in the Navy and is an Earther, so he's probably not bad in combat, but I don't think he could take on Amos in a 1 on 1. But I think he could outsmart him in certain scenarios. Important note: You should watch S2E4 and S2E5 in the same session, it's where the first Book ends.

Florian

I will absolutely try to get both Episode 9 and 10 up next week :) Something tells me, I won't be able to wait between the two either!

Fury Roll

And from this episode forward the show will never slow down. I predict there will be pain at the end of every upcoming episode for you friend :-). It is difficult to call anything two-parter when everything is connected to everything else in this show, but episode 9 and 10 are essentially two part finale of season (even if not the first book itself). I know it is bold plea but could you do episode 9 and 10 together? Pleeeease I bet you would make all of us very happy :-) If not I understand but those week pauses are tough... Anyway, next episodes will finally get you some important answers, and in same cases you will see in your guesses how close or far you got. Thanks for another fantastic reaction. Oh my, that week will be endless...

Lukas Rapouch

Can't wait to see your reaction to this one!
