Digital Inking Notes

When I ink my F:NM stuff, I use a pen called 'Nib Gritty'. It's a pen that I think gives a lot of character to the line work, but honestly, it can be a bit of a pain in the ass.

This is because the jaggedness and varying opacity of the line in places makes it hard to colour (selection areas like to bleed over a lot). Thankfully, there's not a whole lot of colour in F:NM normally, so I can usually clean up things fairly nice.

I think this is probably why, usually when it comes to comics, smoother pen types are preferred for inking. I see pens like the middle one used a lot.

'Binary' pens are actually super popular when it comes to inking, actually. I think this is because of how crisp it makes things, and because of how large inks usually are inn comparison to the finished size of an image*, the result doesn't look as pixely as it was drawn at.

*You should always work your image at a much larger size than you intend the finished product to be. This is because it gives you more breathing room to work on your artwork, but also because once the image is shrank down to 'actual' size, imperfections tend to vanish.
