Familiars and Pets

I recently mentioned on tumblr that I would make a poll so you guys could help me decide the best way to go about this matter.
There's two options:
1) Make familiars and pets two separate beings. The familiars will be powerful colossal creatures bonded to Death's essence, to the point that if they do come to die Death will suffer an immense loss of power. Pets are just what the name suggests. Small animals who love to cuddle and are forever faithful to Death, not because they are essence bonded to them but simply because they are loyal creatures to a fault.
2) Make familiars and pets the same being. In this case pets will be familiars with the ability of turning into massive magical creatures. So basically familiars with two stages of transfiguration, sort of like pokemons hahah.
