The Gerudo and some of 0AD's amazing features

Hey there everyone!

The Gerudo are coming along nicely in the new engine, check out their buildings:

I'd like to showcase a few more of the awesome features that 0AD provides over Medieval 2. I'll show these features in the next up-and-coming video where I play as the Gerudo, but here's a sneak peak:

More playable factions:

Medieval 2 had a hardcoded limit on the amount of factions that could exist in the game, that arbitrary number being 31. There is now no limit, and some of the factions that had to be cut from the game to make room are now back in, as well as some new ones!

Oocca: The Oocca are now being upgraded to a playable faction. You'll be able to field a large variety of animated statues and other objects with the use of Dominion rods.

Ancient Hylians: Once a part of Hyrule: Total War, the Ancient Hylians were cut from the game to make space for other factions. They are now returning as a combination of Ancient Hylians, the Wind Tribe, and Piccori.

Volvagians: The mighty Volvagian tyranny is now being upgraded into a playable faction. Goron slaves, tons of Dodongo units, Scalderas, and many other fire based creatures will now join the last of Hyrule dragons to represent their thousand year empire.

And more!

There will be several other factions being added to the game as well, but let's keep them a surprise for now!

Unit Rosters bumped up to 21:

Medieval 2 had a hardcoded limit on the amount of unit types, that arbitrary number being 500. With all the factions that were present in the game the rosters of units had to be quite limited, about 12 units per faction. Well there is no more limit now. Each faction will now have 21 units, with four unique units tied to the heroes of each faction. Check out some of the new Gerudo units!

Unlimited variation for units:

While medieval 2 supported model variations for a single unit, like with most things in the engine there was a limit to the possible combinations. There were other limitations as well, such as being forced to use the same skeleton (couldn't have tall and short individuals in the same unit, for example). In 0AD none of those restrictions are in place. We can have as many varieties as we want, all using different skeletons. You can imagine this would be a massive boon to Ordona Province, as all the peasants will be able to have an insane amount of visual and animation variety.

Check out some of the variations for the Gerudo below, everything from skin tone, hair styles, clothing colors, it's all possible:

Aquatic units:

Yes that's right. Units can be set to move from land and into the water, as demonstrated by the new Gerudo Sandseal unit:

Most of you probably shouted out "ZORA!" The Zora's entire army will now be able to use it's true and unique advantage that was not possible in medieval 2: walking and swimming into all bodies of water!

I'll be showing some of these new features in a video sometime in the next few days, so stay tuned!

Comments

I'd be careful using BotW as a base, some of the designs are very silly and way too modern.

At the moment religious buildings extend the territory borders of your empire, sort of to represent religious influence. I do like the idea of pursuing two different paths, one leading towards light natured units and the other towards Majora. After I get some factions in I'll see if something like that would be interesting in game.

This is a thought for much later in development but, with how limitless 0 AD is, would it be possible to create a sort of religion system? Like say, building tiered statues of Hylian religion unlocks more light sided units, but building tiered Majora statues unlocks more corrupt units? Maybe changing the way the buildings look to match up with the chosen religion as well? In Age of Mythology, Egyptians had tiered statues of worship. So a statue of a worker had to be built before unlocking the statue of a soldier, which unlocked the statue of a pharaoh, which unlocked the statue of a god. Mind you they only boosted resource gain rather than unlocking units.

I would love to see gigantic maps that represent a larger part of hyrule (or all of hyrule). The units could just be considered larger scale sort of like in the Total War overworld maps (but closer to scale to fit buildings and armies). The same could be considered for resources. EDIT: The default map sizes do seem too small, but looking online there is at least one way to actually create bigger maps. https://wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?/topic/18167-possible-to-mod-atlas-to-allow-bigger-map-sizes/

I can't wait! :D

This is starting to look really good, Neph. Have you looked into the possibility of a "grand campaign" style map somewhat resembling total war? I'm not expecting anything as grand as total war, more like a massive map with multiple factions with plenty of space inbetween. 0 ad's maps are waaaay too small for my liking.

Yes indeed the missions will be ported over.

Cant wait for the video neph keep up the great work :D
