Total War™: ATTILA - Assembly Kit Trailer

In recent weeks of working on Hyrule: Total War, I've been hitting hard coded limits and other barriers that for lack of a better phrase have limited many of my ideas. Someone else recently brought up the notion of porting to a more modern engine such as Rome 2: Total War. While Rome 2 seems to lack many modding tools and features, as well as amazing 3rd party tools that Medieval 2 has, apparently after doing some research Attila: Total War has a very powerful modding tool that blows everything out of the water: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gci9nYvto3s Most of the extreme tedium required to get all of my models and animations in Medieval 2 seems to be streamlined and made easy in Attila. There are several drawbacks with Attila at the moment though: currently there is no way to insert custom sound effects and music (practically a sin for anything Zelda related) and there is no way to create the Freeform Campaign that is the most popular feature of Hyrule: Total War. Ultimately though, it's up to the people who support and play my game as to what I should do. Should I stay with Medieval 2, or upgrade to Attila? Advantages to porting: - No more hardcoded limits. - Every NPC race I've had planned can be included. - No more 500 unit type limit. - Heroes can actually gain levels and abilities, complete with skill trees. - Engine can handle my high poly models better (which means more of them on screen at once.) The lighting in the engine is also much more dynamic, everything just looks better. - Civilians! Disadvantages: - I'd probably have to halt all progress on Hyrule Historia as I learn the tools and the engine to port everything over from Medieval 2. Seeing as quite a few people are constantly asking when the next level will be done, it's a fair enough concern to bring up. - No tools to create a Freeform Campaign. Perhaps if we work together we can convince Creative Assembly to incorporate such a feature, or create a 3rd part tool such as the one Medieval 2 uses? - No way to get any custom sound effects or music in at all. This is the main issue deterring me. Music is of massive importance to the mood and tone of everything in my game, I would never be happy not having Zelda melodies in it.

Comments

Yeah, the good modder-friendly stuff seemed to end with Mediveval II: Total War: Kingdoms and since Total War: Rome II came along things have not been the same. Some people have tried to mod the latter game with varying degrees of success, but that's only because the code is really hard to manipulate. Even worse is that this kit has so much cool stuff but nothing that addresses the meat of the matter: complete overall of the campaign map (and music too, of course). In other words, this is pretty much the diet coke version of a modding kit. So yeah, just stick with M2:TW and don't go through all that bother for nothing.

I would stay with Medieval 2 until the point everything you need is included in the Kit.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the new kit. They've been baiting modders every time a new game is released saying extensive modding tools would be provided. I really like Hyrule Total war on Kingdoms engine but you have my support either way.

I'll look into that LOTR mod, I've not heard of it until now.

Probably going to stick with Medieval 2 at this rate. Every website I've posed this question on has received an almost unanimous "Stay with Medieval 2" response.

Creative Assembly is known for releasing half finished, extremely buggy products that they slowly fix over the following several years. My guess is they intend to add such a feature down the road.

I don't understand. Why wouldn't there be a tool in a modding kit that allows for the creation of a Freeform Campaign? I don't know about everybody else, but that sounds like trying to make bricks without straw.

Continue with M2TW since the campaign is still yet to be done. There should be more transparency with Attila Total War on modding but by then the M2TW Zelda should be finished.

Well it does say that this is the beta for the kit, maybe in the future they will update it so you will be able to do most (if not all) the things that you would like to do. I herd that some people are making a LOTR mod for Attila. Possibly you could ask them for advice.
