Xenotype 5 Year Anniversary and X2: Instrument of Destruction!

Five years ago today, I received a page I fell in love with: Among the myriad characters in Xenotype, Axel stands out as the embodiment of my vision—a character whose essence I captured with remarkable fidelity.

Introducing Axel Ackerman!

In Vangloria, a rigid social hierarchy is enforced by the Social Credit System (SCS), an all-encompassing metric that evaluates one’s worth through a vast, unforgiving network of approval and disapproval. Picture it as a dystopian extension of social media, where public validation or contempt dictates your position in the world.

Axel’s origins are grounded in the grim sub-sector of Fernweh City—the slums, where he was essentially a nameless, unregistered entity, deemed worthless by the society that cast him aside. Survival demanded that he fight, not just for sustenance but as a means of existence. In this brutal reality, he found a grim proficiency in inflicting pain.

His fortunes shifted when he was recruited by "the Coach" of the Soma, an organization that transformed him from a mere survivalist into a gladiatorial spectacle. Axel was subjected to a regimen of enhancement—metaphorically and literally—elevated to a higher echelon of society, and thrust into the savage world of the Blood Sports.

In this harrowing arena, Axel’s existence is reduced to a series of life-or-death contests, a modern-day echo of ancient gladiatorial games. Imagine Gladiator or The Running Man, where those who survive the gauntlet face a final, merciless showdown—a spectacle that epitomizes the extreme devaluation of human life. One day, Axel will command his own manga series, Bloodsport, where the full breadth of his brutal world will be unveiled.

For now, he plays a crucial role in Xenotype as a key figure in Felix's narrative. Though Axel personifies disillusionment and violence, there lies beneath a profound humanity that makes him a compelling character to write. Axel’s persona is one of hardened exterior and calculated strength, a man who equates vulnerability with worthlessness. Yet, through his journey, he has encountered the very worst of humanity, which paradoxically leads him to admire the best in others. In the complex hierarchy of human interactions, he transcends mere alpha traits; he becomes a guardian and an advocate, valuing the seemingly insignificant with a depth of compassion that defies his own harsh self-assessment.

The tumultuous dynamic between Axel and Felix drives the upcoming Xenotype: Instrument of Destruction. After the shattering events of Dreamcatcher, Axel’s world collapses, and Felix stands accused of triggering this apocalypse.

Understanding Axel is no simple task. He is a man of action, whose sense of worth is entangled with his failures and pride. His role as a fighter has left him feeling like a cog in a merciless machine. Yet, amidst this, he clings to the belief that Felix needed him, even as the bitter truth dawns—perhaps Felix never needed him at all, and maybe the best path was one without Axel in it.

Axel Ackerman's story is a raw, unfiltered exploration of value, loyalty, and the stark, harsh realities growing up in a world where lives are mere collateral in a grand pursuit of spectacle.

At its heart, Xenotype is about Felix, a young man with a burning desire to be a superhero and save people. His dream is driven by a deep need to make a difference. In contrast, Axel finds his worth only in his ability to protect others from violence and harsh circumstances.

One fights from a place of idealism, while the other fights because it’s his sole purpose in a ruthless world. Ultimately, the story hinges on Felix and Axel saving each other in ways that only they can.

I'm thrilled for Xenotype: Instrument of Destruction. This is the series' pivotal moment—the Uncle Ben moment—where Felix faces the critical life lesson that will shape him from a teenage dreamer with powers into the superhero the world truly needs.
