[Wallpaper] Wonder Island Beach Day

IT’S TIME FOR FUN, FANTASY AND FESTIVITIES!

In Wonder Island, summer is just around the corner and its time to swim!  Join the Champions of Brightwater as they recline at Cozy Cove and take in the spellbinding scenery.

Originally produced as a part of ARTSTREETs Monthly Illustration Contest for the month of July, this piece showcases the swimwear of our bold adventures and their on-going war against watermelons!

The festive beachside scene is the first in a series of wallpapers that will be exclusively available to our Patron Backers and may be available later as prints.

A WORD FROM THE ARTIST (YUKA CROSS, 21ST, AUGUST, 2021)

“Ironically, Otome was supposed to be the only character in this piece but I couldn’t help but to add the whole gang. Arrowyn and Caspian had premeditated poses to fit their aesthetic, but I do believe Swordo, Son of Swordo and Nibby were a bit more on the difficult end as I’m not very experienced in the realm of drawing animals. I knew I wanted Otome to be displayed as “just a 14-year-old in a bathing suit” so I gave her more modest attire for the occasion. The main problem was putting all the objects and characters into the right places without them getting lost or blending in with one another. The giant crab, on the other hand, was supposed to be just an inside joke between me and my boss but it backfired horribly when he told me to keep it in the scenery because it looked good.”

GET TO KNOW THE FAMILY

Arrowyn. Sporting his iconic colors in a breathy singlet and robust boardshorts, our resident Hero of Brightwater is partaking in Suikawari Suikawari (Watermelon Splitting).   
Belle Pepper.  As one of the Sprites of Brightwater, Belle Pepper’s clothes are a natural extension of her body, like leaves on a tree. So, her options for her swimwear were somewhat limited, or at least that’s what she told the boys. The Mermit Crab doesn’t seem convinced.  
Caspian. Lt. Caspain is cooling off with a tasteful set of open leg boardshorts and deep blue swim top.  
Nibone. Nibone jumps into the fray to join Arrowyn in his war against watermelons, comically choking on the giant gourd. This pose serves as a homage to Joanna from the Rescuers: Downunder (November, 1990).  
Princess Otome. Reclining comfortable on Arrowyn’s cloak (“Who said chivalry is dead?”), Princess Otome is sporting a tasteful one-piece swimsuit in a deep burgundy. Her is tastefully worn in buns and she is enjoying a refreshing piece of watermelon on a stick.  
Swordo, Son of Swordo. Swordo, Son of Swordo has a sword for every occasion and beach day is no exception. Sporting a sleek crimson sash that doubles as scabbard for his Beach Sword, Swordo celebrates Arrowyn’s use of Steelie Steel and is keen to test is own blade against the melon militia!

BEASTIARY

King Crab King. The (former) Guardian of Bubbly Beach lays defeated and partially submerged on the horizon. Once a great King Beast, the bearer of the Orichalcum Crown of Cancer, King Crab King sought to drag down the fun in Cozy Cove but his covetous tyranny was soon undone at the cutting edge of Seelie Steel. Now, there he remains, a constant reminder, that it is wiser to cherish that which you own than to pursue the prosperity of another.   
Mermit Crab. Mermit Crabs are an invasive species of troublesome crustaceans that spend their days collecting trinkets and their nights chasing the reflection of the moon on the surface of the ocean. Originating from places unknown, Mermit Crabs believe they fell to Wonder Island from the moon and have been longing for a way to return ever since. On nights of No Moon, Mermit Crabs come together with the hopes of building a tower tall-enough to return home, constructing vast towers from the objects they have scavenged.
Superstarfish. Superstarfish are the laid-back coastguards of Cozy Cove. When two meet, they always compare sunglasses. Whichever one has the biggest shades rules that stretch of the beach for the next 100 years. Though they are powerful users of Star Magic, they fear losing their good looks so all their magic is spent keeping themselves young.

“It was a pleasant surprise when my boss asked me if I wanted to make another entry, this time for Zelena. Since she’s meant to be an older character I felt more comfortable in drawing her with a little more exposed skin and I may or may not have use this piece as practice for making water texture and to make improvements with the experience I got from making the last beach piece. Anyway, I wanted her to give off a “goth” impression so I used the Hex Girls’ highlights on their dark clothing as reference; not to use as an actual drawing reference, but just a reference to them as characters.”
