Imagine your the only player that had to dump wisdom and you are saving up for full plate armor, and your character is not allowed to be mad at this guy because you gave it “willingly” and you feel unfairly targeted. Obviously DM did not intend to target this player with this encounter but you do have to consider what money means to the individuals playing. And what it represents. Before presenting homebrew mechanics.

2022-04-30 00:22:45 +0000 UTCComment on the MLM encounter - getting "swept up" in an MLM irl can have devastating consequences, and it's often a traumatic experience for those affected. I would have been uncomfortable in this situation. My parents lost everything to an MLM, and my stepdad has never been the same. Now, my response as a player in this situation would have been to attack the non-cromancer, but that's because I react to MLMs with rage, not shame. It could be that the player was upset because they know this trauma or know someone who went through it. They probably should have spoken up, but they might not have been comfortable explaining why. The additional lack of player agency and choice could have made their experience even worse. Hence leaving the game permanently instead of talking it out.

He played for a few games and practically committed suicide in combat because he didn't like playing D&D. He now lives in his beer bottle genie vessel that the party keeps with them.

I sincerely can't imagine prying someone's teeth open with one hand and putting an egg in with the other while in a combat. Just doesn't work in reality! Has to either be with stealth or deception! Like launch it into their mouth with a sling at disadvantage to hit for a called shot. or trick someone into eating it at dinner. I do like the command or suggestion option too.

Bev’s Javelin vs crock in moonstone, giant vs Bev in frost wind shoving things in his nose. The only success was the vomit berry on the snake at the crick in 1 round. A bouquet of roses for murph handling each one. And a plethora of roses to Caldwell! Best of luck to the dm in case 1. Your campaign will never be dull ^_^

The other two members of the party are a dwarf grad student cleric trying to find a PhD advisor and a pink tiefling artificer named Kirby with two Dragonborn adopted dads. 2022-04-29 11:16:00 +0000 UTCI had a similar idea for a BBEG that walked the line between fantasy and reality on tapping into the ability to change rolls. I made him a Halfling Divination wizard with the Luck feat, who had several minions at his disposal. As a lair action, he could kill one of his own minions to gain another portent roll. The encounter was very interesting, playing with the idea of using magic to turn fate in your favor. It was challenging for the party but they liked it. The Cleric even got his robe that gives the wielder 1 portent roll per long rest. Good times.

Instead of just killing him, Jeremy had the god role some persuasion checks and Unati (thankfully) had great diplomacy to assist.... But Jasper basically ended up playing a sorcerer with fish hands for a long time.... Which had huge consiquences for sematic spells until he got meta magic.... Also hilarious fish trial and law stuff that was just great.... It was a pretty awesome mini campaign 😂

At no point should the DM control a choice that the player character makes, barring enchantment magic. Decision autonomy is the ONE thing players have to shape the story, and unless that player was abusing that autonomy (like in the "I want the rock I need the rock" case), it's not the DM's place to take that choice away, or even to leave it to dice rolls.

The player was being a shithead, being difficult on purpose and fully deserved to be stomped. I also don’t think a god should have to do so much as lift a finger to kill an early-to-mid-level adventurer, and the player honestly shouldn’t have a chance of surviving if they’re stupid enough to step to a god like that. If you’ve played literally any D&D you shouldn’t need a DM warning to know that what the player was doing was suicidal, stupid and disrespectful.
