Mixed Bag: Owlbear Cave
Added 2021-12-31 15:43:10 +0000 UTC
Join us as the Wealthy Owlbears hear your homebrew pitches and decide if they work for our eggs. If that sentence didn't make sense, it's ok, it also won't make sense after you listen to the episode. Come get lost in the tank with us!
Can’t believe the first tortle tank was actually an owl cave

The pitch at 26:00 was also in the latest D&D court, but the attitudes of the judges are very different than the attitudes of the owl bears. They ultimately came to the same conclusion. Pretty sure the submitter here was the DM from the latest court case.

In my home games for crits we roll advantage for damage pretty much. So it’s like for a 2d6 we roll 6d6 and take the highest 4. So you can still roll bad, roll good, and get maximum clickyclack.

It would be cool if only the winning owlbear gets to incorporate the homebrews they win into a real life session (trinyvale, hotboy summer, Jake's home campaign, etc)

I have 2 major DMs and one does the double damage on Crits and the other does damage but with advantage, and it doesn’t do way too much damage, but it’s nice knowing that my character won’t be annihilated right away with double damage 😅

See for crits I hate rolling double dice I prefer doubling the roll, so doing the add the max thing sounds way better for me

Loved this mixed bag, but I'm so sad at the missed opportunity to say "lost in the cave"!
That's my homebrew pitch lol

The pebble in ear item was just a different take on the earring from critical role campaign 1.

An alternate to the "conscious at 0hp" pitch: Borrow the effects of the Slow spell, plus other consequences?
- Half movement speed andminus 2 AC/DEX saves, because you're just so tited/beat up
- only 1 action or bonus action, not both, BUT you fail a death save if you do either
This allows the player to communicate and maybe start dragging themselves behind cover, but they could stand their ground by really expending the last reserves of their energy

I don’t know why, but the first thing is thought of as an Owlbear Cave intro was doing the Wolf of Wall Street Matthew McConaughey hum/chest pound thing, except with owl hoos instead of hums

Speaking stones for ears just sounds like a worse rapore spores cuz you have a verbal component along with a hand signal as opposed to telepathy or whatever speaking in someone else’s mind is

I've played with a campaign that combined the critical rule with critical confirmation, so had a choice when you crit. Roll double dice or confirm the crit (to again and see if you hit) and roll normal but add the maximum dice value.

I think the Crit thing could be done as a "Feat" or Ability for a Character. Having it be a whole table rule is kind of silly since, like they said, not everyone would enjoy playing that way. But if it was set up so you could choose to do that as a Character. That might work. Maybe have some concession somewhere else in stats to help counterbalance it.

Truly shocked jake picked my list of magic puns. I would like to point out if you used two fingerless gloves you wouldn't be able to do anything. No weapons, shields, or somatic components. I came up with the item when I had a character with a free hand and didn't want to give them a shield

The first level of exhaustion sucks if you're a wizard. If you're the only high int character in your party, you're going to lose all your intelligence checks. Disadvantages on checks is rough. I think the price is, if anything, too high. I would only use this if a player was going to die otherwise or there was some other serious risk

Great idea, great listen, feel like it could be finessed if no prices were requested, the owl bears decide if they’ll bid and then for competing bids there’s a roll off. Then just like sentencing in D&D court the winning bidder states what they’ll invest

Casting a spell during a death save situation was probably explicitly prohibited since if a healer was down they could just cure wounds themselves and just never be killed.
