Omg a Mary fan in the Wild. She was my whole life in high school. Roulette girl is also an amazing album

Merissa McClure

You are my people, and I’m hella late to the short rest as well.

sydney yalshevec

Nekromantix, Misfits, Tiger Army. Rockabilly and psychobilly take influence from 50s/60s music. It’s fuckin dope. “Live fast die young leave a beautiful corpse.” This is my people you speak of, lmao.

sydney yalshevec

They're old as hell nowadays and very hard to find, but Zombie Ghost Train has some of that rockabilly but with a horror/goth element!

Greg Engle

This is awesome! I’ve learned so much ☺️

Grace B

Bad ass Rockabilly band, Texas Hippie Coalition, look up the song pawpaw hill that is all you're welcome 😊

KellyTheFallen

The one time I'm late to the Short Rest and y'all are basically speaking directly to me, the person with Bettie Page bangs in my profile photo and am a motorsport/car show photographer lmaoooo. As others were saying yeah the imagery you're thinking is tied to the Rockabilly Revival bands of the '80s which were closely related to punk bands of the time and then spawning psychobilly and punkabilly subgenres. From that, you get a lot of the iconography associated that has to do old school styles tattoos which is why you see a lot of roses, knives, snakes, anchors, and skulls as well as a big emphasis on classic horror films. (especially bands like Nekromantix and HorrorPops) Plus like, it's a lot about rebellion and rebellious kids love rad shit like skulls and horror and shit lol. Then on the car culture, car show side of it there is of course the American Graffiti impact but also a BIG part of car show culture is low-rider culture which is largely a latinx space, and a big part of lowrider cars is having amazing custom paint jobs with a lot of sugar skull iconography being common. Also people who have hot rods and rat rods just fucking LOVE putting just so many skull accessories on those. and lots of flames, because it's just cool and edgy and rad on a very scrappy looking fast car that shoots flame out the exhaust ya know. Lotta hell imagery, much like motorcycles. TLDR, Rockabilly folks are just weird punks who also like cars, and skulls are just kinda cool as hell.

Best example of Punkabilly and the only artist I know of who was always referred to that way is Mary Prankster. I think you guys would dig her as her songs were hilarious and she had an amazingly expressive singing voice. (Dad alert: she's definitely not safe to play around kids.) Her original claim to fame was a song she wrote to be as obnoxious as possible for a radio contest (back when those were a thing) called "tits and whiskey." I also recommend checking out "Breakfast" ("I think mom put acid in my orange juice again") and anything on the "Blue Skies over Dundalk" album if you're curious.

Joseph Foley

Rob Zombies Dragula is actually about the Munster Mobile.

Eduardo Rodriguez

And now I’m on a horrorpops kick!

Nye-Low

Honestly it makes me smile every time they say your name after an episode!! So creative and silly 😆That being said, you can never change it or stop giving NADDPOD money 😜

Victoria Shotts

Monster high is a right fun game

Victoria Shotts

I love that murph missed the misfits but he mentioned that most of these bands do a Danzig impression :P wasn't Siouxsie and the Banshees also big with this aesthetic?

scarlet

Yo! Has the gang heard of the band Messer Chups? They do a style that blends monster movie atmosphere with rockabilly to make horrorbilly. (Some songs were featured in the game Monster High which is where I heard them first) I could totally see Jake’s pompadour bone janglin’ rogue rocking out to them!

Meagan LeMay

I played a one shot with some friends and one of them was a kenku. He made a sound board for it, it was hilarious

Ian Reilly

Ballerina here, professional football players do still often take ballet classes for dexterity & some flexibility.

Will Erwin

Orville Peck, another artist that fits this theme

Aver

Also, since everybody is throwing bands out there, I feel compelled to bring up Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS) for rockabilly's sake.

ThrilloftheFright (Ashleigh)

I bet they didn't expect so many psychobilly affectionados in the thread. Haha.

ThrilloftheFright (Ashleigh)

That shout out absolutely made my day! Thank you all so much!

Blair the bugblair barblairian

Oh man, can’t believe I left off the Cramps!! Great call, “I was a teenage werewolf” and “human fly” are perfect examples of that aesthetic. They are the quintessential psychobillly band

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

Yessss Elizabeth Brim kicks ass! One of my favorite artists

It was the episode they lost. Emily decided to roll a new character (Billie) rather than try to recreate a dynamic they already played out. They talked about it in the short rest of the previous episode

Lori P.

I love that Caldwell is playing a mastermind. I’m playing one in a campaign, and we had to break into an alchemist’s shop at night. I knocked on the the door, the night security opened and asked “who are you?” “I’m your boss, you fool! I drank the wrong potion and it turned me into this, let me in so I can make an antidote” with mimicry from casing the shop earlier that day. my gracious dm let me roll and I succeeded! Later when we spring the traps and I went down, one of the loyal guards gave me a health potion 😂

Gotteswaise

what a lovely bouquet of int-roses!

hell

Love Hillbilly Moon Explosion the duets are so good. Nekromantix broke me into the genre.

Stay carry strut feels like a critter corner song

This is very true. Been listening to Hillbilly Moon Explosion lately

The link between punk and horror is psychobilly! The Cramps, etc!

I have a dog, but she was unfazed by Murph's high voice. (Her name is Pepper, which we let her keep from her previous life since she's a rescue, SORRY EMILY.)

Allison Holloway

As everyone in the Discord said, missing the Misfits is missing a trick! But I personally feel Reverend Horton Heat is vibes for this episode.

Allison Holloway

the brain knife ability sounds just like pakunoda from hxh lol

Tommy

Stray Cats is a golden choice for easy rockabilly listening.

CommodoreGalaxy

I can really recommend episode 12 of Rude Tales of Magic called A Murder of Crows if you want to hear a bunch of kenkus talking. One of the party members is a kenku who's gained speech, and this is the episode we meet his family. Honestly also one of the best episodes of the show so far, and you don't miss a lot by just listening to this episode.

Who is Stitcher and how can we get the story with them in it? #ReleasetheStitcherCut

Kozak

The ghoulish punk rock thing is entirely the Cramps and Misfits. Ed Roth as well on the aesthetic side

I know I’m a bit rules lawyery but I play with a soulknife rogue in a campaign I’m so I thought I’d bring it up. Jake said he can expend a psionic die to reroll an ability check but that’s untrue, you simply add the psionic die to the roll almost like inspiration from a bard. Not trying to be a Tattle Tale even though that’s exactly what I’m being. Love you guys and all the work you do!

Some nfl players also do Irish step dance to train!

Jack

I wonder if one greaser ghoul thing could be associating all the movie monsters with the 1950s monster b-movies? Like, why not make the monster look like their audiences?

Axel Ottel

the moment i heard them talk about horror and punk and i thought about the misfits as well. the misfits were making full-on horror movie songs before the ramones made pet sematary.

kimbo ★彡

The cramps are like quintessential psychobilly. And reverend Horton heat. Tiger army from the early 00s I think? I definitely had a phase but can't remember most of them. Horror punk was my jam more. Misfits, Balzac, and also more I cannot remember

Declan Konesky

Next, maybe we will meet a Human Fly.

ThrilloftheFright (Ashleigh)

This episode- It's a Psychobilly Freakout! I love rockabilly and psychobilly. Skeleton with a pompadour 10/10

ThrilloftheFright (Ashleigh)

Caldwell! Show us your sketch of Chrissy! We NEED to see this character design that burst forth into your mind before you started playing him

Slam Piece

Rundown Johnny is more psychobilly. I guarantee he listens to Reverend Horton Heat or Tiger Army.

Travis Dreelin

If all of the Endoterran vault cracking crew aren’t called the Boo Crew omg my cats are wondering where the commotion is coming from also 😜

Hannah

I did ballet and my older brother did football so that factoid was busted out more than once to get him to stop razzing me

A.E. Ross

I wonder if Vincent Price has something to do with rockabilly ghouls, because he was a horror actor in the 1950s and onward that spurred a lot of modern horror tropes. He was one of the earliest men to be suave, yet spooky.

Crankysister

Ed "Big Daddy" Roth might be the origin of cool ghouls driving hotrods

Roark Marks

The link is that Elvis was a fucking Necromancer.

Jodi Fernweh

No dogs barking from the intro but my cat’s giving me a judge-y look

ananarama

Murph, I absolutely loved the new intro. 10/10

Keithan Denkinger

If you look at Rockabilly in terms of the punk connection, it really does primarily stem from the Misfits. I can’t speak of the days prior to the 70’s, but the Misfits were the ones who pioneered the horror punk aesthetic and took the crooning of Elvis and Roy Orbison and overlaid it with the punk explosion. It of course grew deeper with Social Distortion and their hybrid of punk and country, although the horror aspect was mot as much there after their initial release. Their lyrics focused on the struggles of prison, alcoholism, and more working class affairs which definitely blended into the rockabilly vibe. The 90’s just had a lot of bands who took an amalgamation of influences and did their thing. The Reverend Horton Heat being the most prominent leader of what became branded as “psychobilly”. Tigers Army was another big one. I would not call Social D or the Misfits rockabilly, but they definitely had an influence on the punk aesthetic you speak of.

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

The rockabilly link has to be that the golden age of horror movies was the 1960's, and they rockabilly style of the 60's merged.

howisonhaworth

My dad took ballet lessons when he played college 🏉 in the 80s! He and his frat bros took it super seriously, which I think is very sweet

sola

The Raventweens sound like the baddest kids on the block, ones that would invite Zerk to target practice.

Mick

The link is goth. 💀

Melissa Titus

The word "rockabilly" was said an unprecedented 15 times this episode, and I both blame and commend Jake for making that happen

Caitrin

I’m surprised no-one picked the Phantom rogue subclass. It’s so thematic!

HalfLighter

I think the whole skulls and rockabilly association is from the psychobilly genre which in the 70's mixed punk (with it's horror aesthetics) and the rockabilly. Hence skulls with greaser hair.

Isabel S.

I don’t have a dog but they are circling my house like a dog whistle
