I believe you guys that this ep is better, but Stitcher sounds so fucking hot. Also, from a tumblr post about CRTs: “They are literally particle accelerators that you point at your face…. If you overcharge them, they emit gamma radiation. Servicing them is like disarming a bomb—their capacitors are enormous and are usually charged to hundreds of thousands of volts…. A discharge can not only electrocute you, it can cause tools to melt or explode.” so I think when we were kids we got told not to sit to close for our eyes but also because of the radiation. so yes, both TVs and laptops are bad for your eyes, but not nearly the same as getting close to a CRT

I may not be the first to mention that our parents always said don't be too close to the tv because they used to put out radiation that hurt you but they have been updated to where that's not the case anymore so now it's an old wives tale. It's only bad for your eyes to watch a screen for too long because of the blue light

Hey Murph, I'm an optometrist so I can answer your screen question: there isn't a difference between TVs and laptops really. The issue is that being too close to the screen (we call this excessive near work) while young makes you more nearsighted (myopic) while you're still growing and developing. Yes old screens are CRT and new ones are LCD/LED, which does mean screens now have more harmful blue light (but the sun has even more plus UV so doesn't matter much, and blue blocking lenses are mostly placebo). The main issue for adults is eye strain and dryness from staring unblinkingly at screens for hours. So force yourself to blink and take a break every 20 minutes.

I know this is anecdotal but I’m 40 and have been an avid gamer since 86. So much of my life has been hours in front of screens. My eyes are fine. For my 40th this year I went and got my eyes checked. Doc said they’re good to go. No glasses yet.

I absolutely love Murph's screen question. I know there's a myth about sitting close to screens makes your eyesight worse, but all that's been proven is that doing that can fatigue your eyes. Not sure what started the myth, but it might've not been that safe with CRT tvs, bc they fire electrons at a photo-sensitive sheet

Not that Murph or anyone will see this but Incase they do! Why our parents where told to not let us as kids sit too close to the TV, was bc the old tube TVs (the one that weight 200lb) were told to emit miniscule amounts of X-ray radiation that, if you were close enough, could potentially absorb into your body. But this is obviously no longer a issue with modern day LCD screens :)

when Murph was a kid he probably had a CRT (Cathode-ray tube) TV. These have "electron guns" that shoot beams of light from right to left across the display. I could see parents being more freaked out about that than our modern LCD (liquid crystal display) devices. But yes, all screens are bad for our eyes
