Short Rest: Eldermourne - Ep. 30: Endoterra

Comments

Your dystopian book idea exists! It’s called Matched.

Alethea Hansen

How I wish I was in Sherbrooke now!

You’re talking about me. I listened until Fia did the Fortnite dance and fell asleep shortly after. The next day it has autoplayed half way through the Short Rest. So I just started the SR over. Sleepy wildcard energy.

Thmaug

Omg I would watch the heck out of this

Merissa McClure

100% agree that Emily's voice is "fucking gorgeous". I could listen to her or Katie McGrath talk about anything for any amount of time. Also Brennan Lee Mulligan but for different reasons.

Squishy, Pawpaw's Brushtail Possum lover

Coming in late, but If I Ever Leave This World Alive by Flogging Molly has that same rocking sad Pogues energy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCk81G8gnvE

I study math at university and you would be really surprised how advanced you need to get with math or how far back you need to go in order to be able to know more than a person in the past. Capping it at pre-calc it would have to be pre-Babylonia which is at least 2000~2500 years ago.

Portugal has a genre of music called Fado, literally mournful bar songs about the sea or the poor. I believe they're still performed regularly in Portuguese bars.

"Coming soon to CBS: She's a Bladewitch settling down after a lifetime of loyal service. He's an undead skeleton just trying to track down his soul. Will they be able to navigate the big city? Or will modern living just be too much for these Guardians of the Grove? Find out on this season of: Bawaldered".

Also crazy thing about spoilers for older things. (Not specifically night mare before Christmas but like stuff from say the 80s) even though they’ve been out for a long time there’s is a good chance younger people haven’t seen it yet since they weren’t alive and then were children.

Debra Wasson

Gastroesophageal Acid reflux disease can cause nausea and stomach pains.

Debra Wasson

Oh there are still definitely pub songs, come to Canada, specifically the east coast lol Just walk in anywhere and go “OH the year was 1778.. (Barrett’s Privateers)

Jesymka

There's already a YA series about limiting the number of songs and all art. It's called Matched. They picked the 100 "greatest" works of art and the call it the list of 100.

When Emily is the one insisting the group get back on the rails, you know it’s a great short rest!

Joe D’Antonio

the health talk is hilarious— and relatable. i think i have a -2 to con, but also i’ve had a ton of overuse injuries

Jo

Auntie Whispers from Over The Garden Wall is a Sin Eater-type figure if you’re looking for a modern example of the idea!

Nicholas Galinski

Okay - if you’re looking for some awesome Irish pub songs look no further than “rocky road to Dublin” - if you listen to this and don’t get chills I’ll banish myself to pendergreens gem https://youtu.be/0QdbeM2JWYE

Hey Murphy we all love your bony lips. ;)

GREYFOX!!!!!

Legit spent so much time thinking about boney lips BEFORE this short rest when Murph first said it

Nick

Return of the Obra Dinn? You're not really traveling around, but you are an insurance adjuster solving what happened on a boat. I know he talked about it, at least!

This is a long shot, but does anyone know that game Caldwell mentioned on the Short Rest a long time ago about a travelling tax collector or something?

Ill luck Henry !!!

Leo

Respect the CON game, Emily!! Concentration is a must, though my ADHD resents that statement 😂

Wit & Whimsy

Roses to Emily for the music in the fog

Cj Ferrigno

Possibly my favorite short rest

Foster Doss

At the end of the episode Caldwell mentioned that you guys should do a Kansas City show, if that ever happens just know I’m buying tickets for the front row and dragging all my friends with me! I’ll fill up the place on my own if I have to

I'd kill for Wawa's iced tea/lemonade...one thing I miss about the east coast. How Murph and I survived, I don't know.

Marachi music is usually really sad go to a Mexican restaurant and sing with them . =(

FYI, a sin eater is basically a human scapegoat, in the old sense of the word.

Kajsa Anderson

So… are we gonna talk about a recent siting of murph playing a paladin?

Andrew Stallworth

Officially campaigning for Mullet Murph, join the cause MULLET MURPH MULLET MURPH MULLET MURPH

Jack Malizia

I used to babysit a kid who would ask for stories, but not stories read out of a book. So I would just retell the plots of animes I'd seen and pretend I was coming up with it on the spot. The kid loved it.

GM

They were talking about a book about sailors did they mention what book it was

munch lax

I desperately need a naddpole jalapenos bar sing-along

Judson Whitfield

I do like Bard for multiclassing. Granted one level is not enough but with two levels you get "Jack of all Trades" which lets u half proficiency to everything that you're not proficient in. I'm usually the DM for my group but I got the chance to play a 3lvl Paladin/2lvl Bard for a oneshot and I really enjoyed the build

Saru

NADDPOLES I bring you... the tub brisket https://www.reddit.com/r/awfuleverything/comments/nn38pt/brisket_sandwhiches/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Just default dance your troubles away.

Jon Whitehead

Absolutely unhinged this week! Freaking Awesome!!!

Ross Minick

I have listened to Farmhouse on loop for 2 hours. So good! Jake, make a Spotify playlist! Introduce us to these millennial hidden gems. Love, A Zoomer

Ryan Budde

Useless D&D Nerd Fact: Every class starts with proficiency in one of the more "common" saves (Dex, Wis, Con) and one of the more "uncommon" saves (Str, Cha, Int).

An_Armed_Bear

Petition for some of the songs to be: Leave her Johnny - another Sea shanty that's fun. Country Roads - a classic Hanks Sea Shanty - why wouldn't you? Agnus Dei - for the stupidly confident.

BrethrenBlev

I've got fun stuff planned for Sprital, don't you worry! ~Caldwell

Not Another D&D Podcast

A dip into bard can be great! Especially if you have good charisma. Bardic inspirations=Char mod, access to some (getting access to healing word can be great for anyone), 2 cantrips, and I think 2 skill proficiencies.

Jacob Bless

I thought the fortnite dance would be the one they stole from Turk in Scrubs.

Miles W

Petition for Caldwell to draw walder and boney lips...

Priyanka Patel

Now that Spridle has been mentioned, I realize we haven't seen him in awhile. Did I miss something?

Talia

I laughed for like 5 minutes at “it’s a gay skeleton”

Nicole Jordan

I can’t get over Jake never having a stomach ache?!? Has he never thrown up too? Cause those go hand in hand! Loved the episode! Great work as always

Nicole Jordan

Related to people singing together, take a look at maritime folk festival videos, it’s totally got that vibe of people joining in and singing the songs they know. https://youtu.be/49FWp7WLYKw Is a good example

Nick

Where's Emily playing a paladin... a tba Dimension20 season......?? It could be so many other places but 👀

Maya B

YES orange justice is precisely what I pictured. the visual of fia counter-roasting a passing teenager and then doing a fortnite dance has made me start laughing out of nowhere MULTIPLE times today

Ali K

Can I rep Canada and suggest any Great Big Sea song as great pub music. They nail the slow start before everyone joins in thing.

Kayla Holmes

Not sure if it’s an Americanism but in Hanks sea shanty should it not be pronounced Quays as in Keys and not Kways?

Bill French

finally some gay skeleton representation in the media

Rosanna

You people are just so amazing! As usual! Check out "Master & Commander" with Paul Bettany and Russel Crowe. Haunted boy voices singing and cursed sailors being accused of all ill luck of the boat. Super underrated movie and I think you may like it :)

Felix

I mean.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q97IfBOIR5Q there are definitely a lot of great songs, I learned a lot :)

Lopiena

It’s pronounced “kee” in the US as well.

Elise Matthews

Great pub song for a group to sing: flogging Molly - what's left of the flag

Becca_rebaker

This feels like a mixed bag more than a short rest. You know its the matrix when Emily is the one trying to bring it back in. But then doesn't remember anything.

SoupLightning

I love that Em literally described the beginning to this SUPREMELY dumb earworm dredged up from my life 10 years ago: https://youtu.be/Da4V5vKcGl8

Lauren C.

I also caught that. Maybe Catherine Lee 👀 Emily did say she saw a possible Paladin/Sorcerer multi class for Sophia & Dale's kid

Christopher Lasasso

DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE!?!

Best snack for the Short Rest: Microwaved Peanuts

Those who love and give where they can

I agree with Murph. The root of the problem is that there are too many options, too many songs. I suppose it’s a matter of opinion on if that is a problem or not, but it’s definitely a solid point.

Josiah Muskrat

The film Emily mentioned was sea Fever. A fantastic movie with some Irish mythos in it. Also just genuinely creepy. Cuz like… the ocean man…

Pagos, Self-Proclaimed Fae King, asking you to watch The Disruptors. Starring Ally Beardsley and Grant O’Brien

Murph, go to a pub in Scotland or Ireland and you can hear some haunting folk songs

Kenny Cashman

Gay Skeleton is my next username

Potato Muffin

I GOT THE MORNING ACHES TOO! It still happens to me and I don’t even drink sugary drinks bro

Dippity_Dip

Where can I find a place where people will sing haunting songs in pubs … it’s Ireland. The answer is Ireland.

Luke

I don't know if it's been said yet, but in the medieval times when someone would die, during the preparation of the body the local sin eater would be called in and typically they would place something like a piece of bread on the deceased person's chest to let it absorb all of their " sins" and then the sin eater would eat the bread and wash it down with ale. They believed that the more sins a sin eater consumed, the more evil they became. Typically they were houseless individuals who begged on the streets and made a little money as a sin eater. It's believed that if the dead person sins were consumed, they could get into heaven free and clear

Ayn Like Ryan

So we can expect Emily doing the Fortnite dance at the next live show I assume

Ceridwyn

when Jake said he hadn't seen Nightmare Before Christmas I could so clearly imagine Murph holding back his inner Cody Walsh/Pendergreens...and then I also had to fight my own inner nerd monster when yall mentioned sin eaters because the current Final Fantasy XIV expansion's story heavily features them lol

ursa

They're really forcing me to be that guy, but they're referencing Fairytale of New York by The Pogues, not whatever made up song title Jake kept saying

The Real Kal-El

“He’s a gay skeleton” made me fucking snort

Cameron Davis

Fun fact about Saving Throw Proficiency game design: Wizards balances the saving throws so that three of them are considered high value, and three are relatively low value. Every single playable class has one high value save and one low value save. The high value saves are Wisdom, Dexterity, and Constitution; the low value saves are Charisma, Intelligence, and Strength. This is why you have some weird cases like Monks not having wisdom save proficiency- dexterity was considered more key to them, and they couldn't have two high value saves. This is also why the charisma casters have some of the best save spreads in the game- charisma saves are much more common than the other two kinds of 'low value' saves.

Bastet

👀👀👀

James-Anne Lovely

Iirc the 'rule' for what saves a class get is everyone gets one common save (con\wis\dex) and one of the less common or useful saves (int\str\cha)

VerminFang

Toddler hat solidarity!

Crankysister

I can’t believe I forgot about the last time Emily danced on the podcast!!! Thanks for the great reminder jake 🤣

Nia R

Diversity fail! This podcast erases a skeleton’s sexuality.

Ben Delahay

Also of note, I dont remember many Phish songs outside of "Esther". First heard it coming down from some psychedelics after a Roger Waters concert. Riding in the back seat of my buddys car and this song came on, my mind couldnt comprehend what they were singing about, still bizarre even when sober. A tale of a girl and her puppet, that fittingly ends with a death in the ocean waves Heres a little lyric sampling (sorry for long text): "It was late one fall night at a fairground near town When Esther first saw the Armenian man Who groveled toward her and stood by her side With a bucket that swung in his hand His grin stretched the folds of his pasty white cheeks And his lips hurled a dollop of murk on the curb And the lights from the rides showed a mischievous sparkle That flashed in his hollow eyed stare He said "Little girl, you can chop off my legs And then peel off my socks if you want to. But I'd rather you took this old puppet from me That I hold in my pail as we speak." And he stood looking down at the innocent girl And she stared at the bucket bewildered Til he lifted the doll for the young girl to see And a giant smile grew on his face She saw the doll's eyes and she couldn't resist And she thanked the man quickly and ran to the church And she burst through the door with puppet held high And a hush filled the chapel, and the people looked mean"

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

When Henry finally gets killed (jokes) can we have the episode fade out to a haunting version of 'Ill Luck Henry' in the style of Rains of Castamere?

Phil Batchelor

This episode makes me think that Murph plays deep rock galactic a lot and I am so here for it. ROCK AND STONE FOREVER

Nico Madden

I hope when I die they start to refer to me as an old gay skeleton

Sabrina Bernaby

Can confirm: kidney stones are no joke! I got to see mine because it came out while I was in the shower, way past the time of the worst pain. It was huge, but fortunately not pointed.

Nolan Childerhose

I like boney lips as a description in the episode, but I also enjoy Murph getting roasted for having said boney lips.

Patrick Sullivan

After hearing abouut Murph's ability to get irritated by annoying people are the bar and have it ruin the experience, I have never felt more seen! Tank you Murph for normalizing us goofy curmudgeons who just want to have a drink with our friends in peace!

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

Emily’s playing a paladin atm. Future D20 character maybe? 👀

Tara Boyle

(((((((((****whisper**** just in case you do a live show in Manchester again, I’m 98% sure they pronounce “quay” as “key.” I don’t want anyone to yell at you. I think you can pronounce it either way in the US. I guess it doesn’t really matter. Thank you, love you very much, obsessed with your beautiful song and Fia’s beautiful reaction, cheek kisses.)))))))))

Just wanted to say I loved the episode, also this is my 1st live episode! Found the podcast during the middle of the pandemic and listened all the way up to here from the beginning, been listening to short rest since bevs dad was evil. Love the show and keep up the great work

Can I steal your Discography Dystopia idea? And can I call it Disctopia?

Bulbarat

can I get a "gay skeleton" piece of merch in the store asking for a friend

Dana A

Or lippy jaw

Bulbarat

Instead of Boney Lips, you should've said Lippy Bones

Bulbarat

Devastated that I'm the type of person who would drink too much and ruin Murph's night... and yet I won't change!

MJMM

Glad I have those fortnite dances in my search history now and my YouTube recommended will be ruined for weeks

Nick Spivey

Aw yeh, nah, I'm really looking forward to this yeah

Billie Ash

Praise Melora!
