Critical Role did the same thing with an immovable rod and an ancient dragon, and it didn’t kill the dragon it just did a massive amount of damage so if you didn’t want to kill the dragon you could have just done a ton of damage to it and maybe slowed it down enough for the party to get away.

hannah

As i new DM i had the benefit of playing with a group of good friends and/or good players so i have legitimately just said give me a minute because y'all just fucked me. Haha luckily they are all polite and understanding enough to give me time to think

Michael Glander

It’s a fucking button! It’d be pressed before any ripping happens

Dan

Zone of truth specifies a creature and I dont think regular plants would be considered a creature even when they communicate. Might be knit-picking

Cory P

I can't believe the judges of a DnD court aren't familiar with immovable rod abuse cases

Summer Tribe

Immovable rod fixes in place , even defying gravity, if the dragon doesn't move it would be fine , it's not stuck in the dragon mouth it's stuck in that part of space. If the dragon was flying at them then it would rip through the dragon but if it opened its mouth and moved backwards it would be free. Also if they can't find a way to get back up to the rod to press the button , it's stuck there forever and they got rid of the rod!

Nick Lerche

the dm on the squire question was basically saying that Baldor would have been the same level by the end of the game that he was at the start cause Beverly never trained him out of battle

J Harkins

On the squire case it seems like the DM is making a distinction between being in battle and "training" and I think that holding off levels unless there was some out of battle training is not fair really. Especially since the players said the Squire was with them every fight. I apply for APPEAL!

tonytheoneandonly

Season 1 of Critical Role had the dragon situation. I think the black dragon that Scanlan dimension doored inside (to activate the immovable rod) just got its tummy ripped open, but flew away anyways. Might want to check that out for reference!

Martin Paluoja

I NEED to ask about my issue with rope trick, moon beam, and shadow demon!

Magestain

That was my thought as well! Emily's try not to swallow test really should have been try to keep your throat in the same space for five minutes. If the dragon didn't know it was an immovable rod I doubt it's going to know to stop moving.

I don't think I've ever heard anything as funny as "the DM took a third of each horse, killing them all" in my life. The absolute TEMERITY

Joseph O'Toole

Not reading through the comments to check but the pig case is really easy to solve all you have to do is have the pig run away because of all this tension in the party and male or female come back with a little baby pig that is their progeny boom wizard gets a pig homie can get his pig back

Mitchell Blake

"sounds like you guys got equally owned" god damn, caldwell had such a funny zinger after hearing the first case and it sounded like no one laughed

some loser

I concur with Enahs. Please the court, recall that the rod is immovable relative to the world frame, not relative to the reference frame of the dragon. I would submit that a better analogy than the cockroach pencil would be if a tiny creature shoved a steel toothpick into the fleshy folds of your inner throat, and that toothpick *suddenly stopped moving when you did*. At the least you'd be very surprised and trying hard to hold your head still. Though an argument could be made for some sort of armoured dragon gullet, since they have to withstand their damaging breath.

elliotcm

I'd like to weigh in on the dragon case to say that the dragon would essentially be grappled and taking large amounts of damage each turn while it tried to move. Also, I'd argue that there is a random chance that the throat and stomach muscles would be able to push the button on the immovable rod, which the dragon would roll for each turn.

Enahs

Could you imagine undusted floppy tortilla. *judges in Mexican American*

Pagos, Self-Proclaimed Fae King, asking you to watch The Disruptors. Starring Ally Beardsley and Grant O’Brien

Strait up, my senior thesis in college was all about how Super Heroes where equivalent to the Greek heroes. Caldwell's rant there made me so happy.

BeanCurdHero

The duality of Emily's genius is listening and getting a great idea out of a dragon with a bane mask and then accidentally writing "saliva filled Maw" because Emily is just talking about not swallowing for a minite

King Dorkimus The 3rd

Caldwell's last line, "Get off my CASE," didn't get the recognition it deserved.

The horses should have survived, but been turned into Dachsund-style lowrider horses.

Heckin Good

I was listening to this and had the hiccups. Caldwell's hard pivot "not to bring up sex offenders" surprised me so much it cured my hiccups. Thanks for a brilliant 'sode guys!

Oh wow! I was listening to this on my back deck at twilight, and an honest to goodness PawPaw waddled into the yard and started eating some flowers.

Erin

It involves the elk barbarian subclass, monk speed and an extra dash with a ki point, tabaxi double movement, boots of speed double movement, action surge, and the help of party casters bestowing longstrider and haste. If you're curious, here's the sheet: https://ddb.ac/characters/43758522/scAMnv we also considered making them a druid so they can turn into a horse and use the horseshoes that double the creatures movement, but IDK if all the modifiers would carry over.

Ilana Galpert

I love the guy who maxed carrying capacity. I built a character, with much help from my fellow players, that can exceed mach 1. We named it Furry Allen. I can't imagine how combat would work, though--how would that speed add to the damage?

Ilana Galpert

Emily: There are internships that you get truly 0 experience from Me: Yeah like you did with Gilear 🤣

Annie

Whenever I say "Let me check my notes", I'm always making something up.

Taylor Schult

Can you guys make a shirt that says: “hummus belongs to no one”? K thx

Kendra Waters

Right this completely had me like "I'm sorry what? Go back and talk about that"

Her Majesty, Claudette

But duncle was the best kind of right. He was technically right

Francis A Leyco

I was literally closing my eyes to take a nap listening to this and then Caldwell said “not to bring up sex offenders”, and I woke right up.

Kris Barnes

Does anyone know if the drawing stream happened ?

Lisquander

Not to bring up sex offenders lmfao Jesus Caldwell

Scott Allen

I think the DM did a good job. In the future they could use a type of Dragon that maybe has a stronger/incorporeal throat? Or ya just destroy the rod after that kind of use! :) either way good job DM!

Brandon Wiens

As soon as the Dragon moves though it would rip through them! Unless the Dragon stays perfectly still?

Brandon Wiens

So, I think the find familiar spell says a couple things that ensures a PCs familiar can’t be stolen. 1) The familiar “always obeys” the caster’s commands. Since this is true, the caster can literally just say “hey, leave that asshole and come sit on my shoulder,” and the familiar will do so 2) the caster can also use an action to bamf the familiar into a pocket dimension, and then can use another action to bamf it back anywhere within 30ft of them. This implies that the pig-napper can’t physically restrain in the familiar in anyway, seeing as the caster can just un-summon it at any time. So, if we’re talking RAW, there’s really no contest for custody lol

I guess by the book zone of truth only affects creatures and I don’t know if like a regular flower that has speak with plants on it would be counted as a creature.

Geoffrey Cater

All this is meaningless until we get a "Hummus belongs to no one" t-shirt in the shop.

Pat Lusk

For the dragon, I would've had the player make a dex check not to get eaten. Then the Dragon make con/strength checks to muster the focused strength to meet the 8000lb mark

Bulbarat

Time out....did we all just blow past the fact Caldwell says suz went to college with vigo’s son at Columbia? Real? Not real? The court needs a recess so I can take a Beverly 1000 yard stare moment.

Marge In Charge

In that case, shouldn't it be a dexterity check? To make sure the PC can wrangle the awkward weight distribution of whatever it is they are trying to lift?

Sara

I kinda understand why you’d ask for a roll to lift something abnormally large even when you can lift 10k pounds. I can carry a 120 pound weight with relative ease but carrying a 120 pound 60 inch TV was difficult AF lmao

Michael Singer

Advice for DMs - if your put something in your dragons mouth... have them... back up?

Noah James Perito

Yeah this is why they were allowed to kill the dragon. Bur realistically i think you give the dragon a save and take a chunk of damage. Because if a 4 tonne dragon can hit someone with a claw and not kill them, its force probably isnt enough to just impale itself

Ganonbort

With the immovable rod, I feel like the rod is meant to stop in its current location, so if the dragon were to move with the rod inside it, the rod would stay in the same location related to the world outside, not related to the dragon

Noah Smith

was it your squire ?

I have never felt so much rage at a D&D Court decision. It shows how blinded they all are from DM Bias and how stacked the court is. Communication is a two way street. Is the player at fault for assuming a character that was always in combat didn’t level up? That’s a DMPC. That was their job to handle. Also, when has a player going down a lot stopped them from earning XP if they live or getting a milestone at a certain point in the story. Does Zirk not get a milestone level up because a bunch of kids kicked his ass? This should be appealed. Kangaroo Kourt is in session.

Ben Delahay

This court room is loosey goosey and I love it. Some real table humus energy

jackalope503

I feel like it's a double fault with the squire. Yes the player neglected them, but the dm should have informed the player of their rules for having a squire at the beginning. And it was in the info that the squire fought alongside the party every battle as an npc.

Canid

I gotta say with a lot of these questions overall, the answer is "make a save" If nothing else, it feels like even crazy plans can have a small chance of success without just saying no outright

Matthew Nardozza

Honestly I would 1000 of these!!

Bo Oelkers

Thank you daddy Murphy!

Arwyn Robinson

Yay!!!
