I also really like using the sprite pact/promise to get QBCC out of the way without killing her. Most times an enemy combatant would totally swear to give up but the PCs can't enforce it, so they just wind up killing them. It's very fun to use the world in a narrative way to let them avoid just murdering everyone they see.

Having just listened to the Short Rest I would like to say that I am totally down for the main campaign to go on hiatus for a few weeks again following the end of this arc so that the gang can play a side quest as bad guys in Eldermourne. Reaper's Creepers sounds fun as fuck. I don't know if Caldwell would step away again for a few more weeks of paternal leave, though I assume not, but it'd be cool to get a guest on for a few weeks for that short campaign, whether to replace someone or simply to join the full crew. Actually, it sounds kind of awesome to have a mini campaign of 2 to 4 episodes between every arc or three that someone else DM's each time. You could even get guest DMs like Brennan or Lou on, though I'd love for Jake to DM something on the pod too. Doing so would give Murphy time to plan out the bigger stuff in the main campaign pretty much anytime he wants, everyone would get to fuck around with weird builds they'd never play long term, they could do some fun world building etc. and I imagine Murph would enjoy playing a character for a few weeks every now and then; especially one he can haul in to the regular campaign as an NPC that he's built up as a player character if he wants.

Re: detect thoughts- one of the pcs in my party can cast it at will (which is borderline dnd court I feel like), and it's INCREDIBLY helpful. You can use it for questioning, or reconnaissance (like recently we wanted to see if someone was telling the truth about not knowing a person, so we casually dropped their name while checking how the person mentally responded). It's v good for getting some kind of truth out of people who you don't trust!

The rules are neither realistic nor simple, they are made to provide satisfying battles. Pacifist TTRPG is a thing, just use the right ruleset.
