Short Rest: Eldermourne - Ep. 7: Trial by Scale

Comments

i gasped at work when i heard "emily ate asparagus with a spoon" it shook me to my core, but somehow on brand

James Muscat

you guys have never had good asparagus. best way to cook asparagus: marinate in lemon juice, vegetable oil, salt, pepper, any other seasoning you like, and grill it. my dad makes it for big family events and we never have leftovers.

puss-in-kinky-boots

lol the jake and amir bit at the top of this would work for bird flu

Shel B, Kenna’s 2nd fave sprite girl. Happy pride to Fia Jens Moonshine Bev and all the rest! PawPaw says reer here reer queer

The Netflix show Wednesday. uses "wolf-out" for the werewolves turning!

Ben Wilcox

some days ya gotta bite the string cheese

Falka Punch

i had a friend get ran over car-surfing and i periodically forget that whole ordeal, (don’t worry he is fine now)

Jo

My dad recently read an article that pickle juice is good for muscle pain so now he just drinks it??? Seems like a Henry thing. He doesn’t eat the pickles though.

Nova

All of y’all’s high school experiences sounds like they’re from 90 films! Wild tbh I graduated high school in 2016 and 1. I feel like there is a special brand of crazy to y’all’s stories 2. Most of the people who snuck out at my school did so to smoke more than to do shenanigans

Debra Wasson

I was a Wallace & Gromit kid! Love hearing it referenced here! Also Gumby and Rudolph! Talk about formative years. Love that stop-motion goodnes!! 😆

Lily Everett-Curwick

I am team DVDs on bookshelf but only if it’s in the same room as the TV. Otherwise that seems silly. Also they should go on a shelf below eye level IMO.

Allison Shaw

"Whip me up a charcuterie, and make it stinky, mom"

1man2hands

I want Henry to discover the pickleback drink so badly. it's either vodka or whiskey with pickle juice and it's strangely delicious either way

Hymntastic

I see this advert all the time and I totally forgot. Truly sofas are a product that only adults buy

Charlotte

Craving a murph-written Jake and Amir ep now

Scott Craig

I'm absolutely terrified of Wallace and Gromit, glad to know my first experience with short rest features my most irrational fear

Heyyitsphil

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but Shawn the Sheep from the studio that did W&G is hilarious. The movie is pretty good, but the tv show is amazing. For kids and adults.

Castle

Someone's probably said this by now, but for the record Wallace and Gromit actually did accidentally make wensleydale cheese really popular. They were on the verge of collapse as a business, but then Wallace says it at one point because the animators wanted his mouth to be animated a certain way. Not a direct sponsor, but still worth mentioning

Y’all out here talking about the actual episode not what really mattered in the short rest. That Wallace straight up loses interest in someone because she’s lactose intolerant. Gotta get that cheddar.

Joe K

If you guys ain't digging asparagus, then you need to up your asparagus game!

Mick

When Murph laughs at Emily's "it didn't go unnoticed" it made my heart so happy. Emily is so funny and I love that her husband thinks so too. 😍 I also love that Murph gave up keeping these short rests on the rails and now contributes to the chaos.

Becca_rebaker

My DM is looking into a SW5e campaign for us next and I’m so excited!!!

Instead of Bagging it with Balnor... what if the choo choo crew did Booking it with Bookvar?

Jeff Merrill

Chicken Run is hilarious, I'll probably watch it again cause of all four of you 😂

Samuel

I haven't! I will put it on my libby wish list!! -Emily

Please be careful!!!! My experiments didn't play out well!!! -Emily

Not Another D&D Podcast

I would disagree fully, I think that was a very interesting choice

Saving Whitlock is sooo damn lame and boring!!!

Michael

Bathilda is for sure Nanny Ogg

Lara

and yeah teens are still very dumb

Syd

As one of the very good teens that listens to this show, my friends have car surfed before and it was hilarious

Syd

GOD IS GOOD!

Barback of Penance

I’m a High School teacher, and I will say teenagers are both as dumb as ever, but definitely more knowledgeable. Like they have nuanced takes on political issues but are also probably going to do something like car surf

Adrienne C

the moment I realized that you all are my people - "I'm just trying to fill my mouth with cheese"

Alexander Gradecki

Okay good! That's how I've been doing it, I just didn't make that clear in the episode. Mostly, I was just sad those villagers couldn't keep their yakbaks forever. ~Caldwell

Not Another D&D Podcast

Props to Jake for checking whether or not the Prophet Kaine was a version of Henry

Devin Awe

That's for spell slots, but the spells prepared are still class-dependant and limited to Fia' s level in that class. Emily knows what she's doin =)

Max Telmer

I'm 32 and I still say "man that's a high snow pile imma drive up it"

Nathan Poulson

FYI Wallace & Grommet advertise sofas in the the UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uyM9z8vcQo

SeeYouAnon

Emily! Have you read the Doctor Greta Helsing books by Vivian Shaw? I immediately thought of Fia when reading them. They’re about a woman who is a doctor to all supernatural beings. They’re not as good as Discworld of course but you might like them as quick reads between! (Also the Night Guard books in the Discworld books are some of my favorite ones if not favorite books in the series. So excited for you to read them).

Andy Branton

Star Wars 5e is a super easy transition if you want to give it a shot for the sarlac pit. My group just started an SW5e campaign and we switched effortlessly into the new classes and abilities

Branson White

Hearing that Granny Weatherwax was the inspiration for Batilda makes me sooooooooooo happy!!!! AHHHHH I'm losing my shit!!!

D'ran Dana

Caldwell, you can use Magical Tinkering as many times as you want! It's only the number of tinkering effects you can have active at once that's limited to your Intelligence modifier. From one artificer to another, tinker away!

Jennifer

Duncle Caldy with a Dune reference!!!

Nye-Low

I'm so happy every time Emily brings up experiencing Terry Pratchett. His writing holds a special place in my heart and NADDPODs similarities with his writings is what drew me to it. Emily, you owe it to yourself to read Wyrd Sisters, where Granny Weatherwax returns alongside her entire coven!

Patrik Axelsson

Loved the toadlimax explanation. Who else was definitely googling "toad le max" while listening to the ep?

Stephanie Karisny

Thanks for validating my string cheese behavior Jake and Caldwell 😭

"Whip me up a charcuterie, Mom, and make it STINKY." 😂

When I heard Zirk shove the potion into Henry’s ear I immediately thought of a name for it! The “Ear”lixir- A potion that does 2d6 healing, but is ineffective unless it is administered through the ear canal.

Can we plz talk about when Murph walked 50 miles to his parents home when he was at college humor😂

Joe

You should all do something similar to the people from "The Film Reroll" podcast. They take popular movies and play them as p&p campaigns to see what happens. It's so funny. I could picture you doing the same with famous scenes or something.

Gibson

I am SO happy Emily is reading discworld, one of my favourite series ever! (Mort and Soul Music are my personal faves, I mean, anything with Death in it, hes amazing). Since Murph mentioned star wars, there is SW5e, which is a completely Dnd 5e of Star Wars, I actually have been playing in a campaign of it for over a year and a half. Very fun and great to geek out to!

FYI I’ve technically smooched Caldwell since we have both kissed the Blarney Stone

Maple Sunchaser

It makes me so unreasonably happy that the Discworld is living on in this campaign. For not having read any of the Witches series Murph has a pretty good take on Granny Weatherwax. Hopefully the Pratchett influence continues, I don't know of anyone who has better described a fantasy world transitioning into an industrial revolution like Eldermourne is.

Probably already said but I wanted to chime in. Emily you're doing your spell slots wrong and you basically level as normal! There's a special multiclassing table in the PHB for spellcasters and to avoid getting in the weeds, both cleric and wizard count as full casters and so you would have the same amount of spell slots as if you were pure wizard or pure cleric. Just want to make sure you know so you can choose to fix it early or stay with it and not find out at level 10 or something.

Icarus DeOsu

That is so sweet!!! What does she play? What a special way to get to know your kid outside of what they will tell you on the surface. -Emily

Not Another D&D Podcast

Oh my God, Emily's story about her friend car surfing is the same one that she told in this CH video about the time they were most hurt. https://youtu.be/n6XfoFpG_W8

Samuel Benhardt

I am so excited that someone turned Emily onto the Discworld series. I am also a huge fan of those books. The Vimes series are my favorite followed closely by anything with Death in the lead. Batilda as Granny Weatherwax is so great.

Ton of the Kirk

as a language nerd I found the new critter action something of a cLIMAX

No promises, mate ;) ~Caldwelll

Oh man! We just watched that Rudolph special on thanksgiving after reading an article how it was messed up and it is brutal! Glad to hear that shouted out cause it is a bit disturbing

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

Current campaign is just a little over a year old and it's just a basic forgotten realms setting, my 13 year old daughter is playing in it and it's her first d&d game so I wanted to give her a more traditional experience.

Logan

That's so awesome!! What is your world called? Have you been dm-ing in the same world for a while? -Emily

Not Another D&D Podcast

Oh I will get there! I'm currently reading Mort, and taking breaks inbetween to read other books (just seems good for the brain to consume some diversity). My next Discworld book is Guards Guards Guards! -Emily

I will be trying this today!!! I have a big bundle of asparagus that I was trying to figure out what to do with. -Emily

Been a DM for 20+years, just wanted to say this podcast has renewed my passion and my players can tell! I stole the flashback thing Murph does and it blew my players away! Thanks for the amazing content!

Logan

i can’t believe i forgot about the skarsgard jackhammer. my god....

Rachel

Emily & Murph's RP of Fia's pleading was heartwrenching- but it also made her saving Syb, who we know ran from their family & wasn't expecting anyone to help them, so much more lovely. Seriously I keep thinking about that moment, it's so heartwarming & Good.

tacticalgrandma

As someone who was a teen when the internet was around & was comparing her teenaged low moments w yours- the internet doesn't make teens any smarter it just means our embarrassing stories are more boring. Getting into fights in the comments section of a Green Day fan article isn't as fun to listen to.

tacticalgrandma

Just wanted to say, the flash backs are a perfect example of how this podcast goes from comedy to serious and balances it well.

Myka Donati

I love you guys, all of you guys and all the work that you do makes me laugh and think.... And Caldwell voice work is always stellar... But speaking from the UK, dude please do NOT do the Wallace voice again! 😂😂😂

Lee Blatchford

Er, Caldwell, just for future reference, the guards wee on the Blarney Stone.

The Great Zarquon

I believe that Wensleydale was saved by Wallace and Gromit as well. Also I watched it as a kid in the US because my parents liked it and it was on PBS

Vince Mascoli

For fuck's sake why do Americans give cars and licenses to underage kids... :D

Martin Paluoja

Getting a glimpse into Zerks childhood and early adoration of his mom really nicely highlighted the all around support vibe he’s got going on. Backstory drops are DOPE.

Maxwel Anderson

Emily reading Discworld novels and loving Granny Weatherwax makes me so stupidly happy 😭 The Tiffany Aching books (wee free men is the first) would actually be a good fit for Fia! It's also about a young girl becoming a witch (and Granny Weatherwax becoming her mentor in the later books 👀👀)

Saru

Unsolicited cooking advice: Roast your aspargus in the oven between 200°C and 220°C (392°F and 428°F) for about 10-15 min . Coat them in olive oil and other seasonings as your liking. They get a crispy , keep a much more firm texture and much of their flavor.

Groove819

Wallace and Gromit have advertised a surprising amount. They've done a Car, Cream Crackers, Tea, Gas and Electricity, a luxury department store in Bristol, Wensleydale Cheese, some educational stuff for the Science Museum and Proms, and most recently, a furniture store.

Tom J

Emily, I believe you too, can stand on Tenser’s Floating Disk. I don’t see anything that says you can’t. The spell only ends when the 1-hour duration is over, the 500lb limit is exceeded, or the Disk becomes more than 100 feet away from you. You can’t stand on it and ride it, but you can definitely stand on it.

Garrett Morrow

I simply MUST try this cheese now. ~Caldwell

Top notch Murph story

Good Guy Josh

Film Reroll plays movie as tabletop campaigns. I feel like the final act of Rogue One would also be incredibly fun to play

Jake- your sister's songs are great! Added them to my liked playlist on Spotify 😌

Robin Greer

Guys, "limace" is the French word for slug. You can say it that way : lee - mass

JoWade

Fun fact! Wallace and Gromit helped save the struggling Wensleydale cheese factory in the 90s, and the characters now appear on the labels. The description of the cheese here is almost poetic: https://wallaceandgromit.fandom.com/wiki/Wensleydale

Erin

"Wolfing out in the make out closet didn't go UNnoticed" ....i lost it!

Eric Bushell

also now I gotta car surf just because yall told me not to

Kenna L

spooning asparagus has me in tears

Enahs

Feeling like I didn't use my dumb teenage brain to it's full extent, most dangerous thing I ever did was drive a mountain pass durring a very bad snow storm alone? But also grew up in a mountain town so was bound to happen at some point or another. Absolutely astounded at how many of yall has car surfed and lived???

Angie Goslin

There is a podcast where they recreate famous movies as TTRPGs. It’s called Film Reroll.

Riley M

Movie fights with like random pcs you all play as who are like background people

Makeitsweat

The Toadlemax gave me very big Sarlacc vibes

Myles Lee

After hearing the car surfing bit... I'm genuinely not sure how the 2Crew managed survive to adulthood

Jayson Bailey

I was once on a golf cart and hanging onto the side and my friend was swerving and I ended up falling off and rolled onto the ground going like 10-15 fastest a golf cart could

Jaydon

As a very good teen who listens to this show I didn’t know what car surfing was until now. Gotta be honest it doesn’t sound fun.

*Sits down AC Slater style* "Hey kids, we've had a lot of fun here, but just remember: crit on your homework, and always wolf out before you Skarsgård Jackhammer."

joel

Also it’s my 17th birthday and this short rest really made me smile so thanks guys!!!💗

Sabrina Bernaby

Hi, Naddpod/Dimension 20 teen here! And I would like to make it very clear that have not and have no desire to ever car surf. Nor do any of my friends. The only thing I do in my car is safely drive to Jamba Juice and get a peanut butter mood. If I wanted the sensation of surfing on the street instead of the ocean I would learn how to skateboard. I wouldn’t ride on a zooming metal box of death. I like my knee caps and would rather not have them cut wide open. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Sabrina Bernaby

Ayyy you know I’m listening to this on my run through Regent’s Park tomorrow. Thankye kindly from London xo

Rosanna

I never had a yak bak but I did love me some HitClips.

Michelle Y. Kim

The baron never used it. Only thing we *technically* overlooked was the minute concentration, but it's a cantrip, so it could have been re-cast over and over until combat started, which lasted less than a minute so far. - Murph

If you like equal rites you'll love wyrd sisters

If any ones actually wondering who would advertise in Wallace and Gromit the answer is no one because it originally aired on the BBC which does not have ads

Brightest part of my day is when that notification buzzes on my phone!!

Nothing rings my christmas bell like Rankin Bass! The Year Without a Santa Claus and Santa Claus is Coming to Town define my childhood winters.
