DM/all players question.. How you you write characters backstories into the campaigns? How much of it would you say comes from the players when they design their characters, and how much does Murph create as the DM? Then, from an overall campaign point of view, do you start with the characters and build initial plotlines and arcs from them, or do you start with a rough storyline and build characters to fit into that?

What is that one class that you would just never play because it is just eww for some reason. For me it is the Bard, I have a mental disconnect with how performance can cast such powerful spells when others have to make deals with devils, Gods or study in a library (having said that, the College of Eloquence, Greek philosopher inspired Bard has piqued my interest).

Please oh please the lot of you: Hello from down under! I DM for a great group of people and during our strict lockdown here in Melbourne we switched to playing over Zoom. Our Fighter was negotiating with a map merchant for a map of the city they were in and asked to inspect the map. When they were shown the map they 'screenshot' the game (unbeknownst to the rest of us) and refused to barter further. I out away the map thinking everything was hunky dory. Later, when the map was crucial, my player claimed their character had a photographic memory and showed the screenshot to the rest of the group! Being a benevolent DM and all of us getting a good laugh out of it, the gag became canon and we've done some great stuff with it: eg, we keep a record of our adventures entitled 'Zashier's Photographic Memory Journal'. I know this will bite me later, so my question is this: how do I mess with them and what shenanigans can I throw their way to make them (hilariously) regret their actions? Hope you're all well on that end of the world!

Question for the DMs: Recently I ran a session that went very poorly. I was stressed from real life and wasn't able to complete some of my prep work that made the session confusing and tedious for my players. Now I know I should have just postponed the session, but can't do that. My question is, should I roll with what happened and just make adjustments moving forward? My other thought was to retcon the whole encounter, say that what happened was "all just a dream" (they spent the night before in a magic grove of light). and restart the encounter with some tweaks. How do you suggest handling dice rolls in roleplay-heavy scenarios? Does it make more sense to roll a die before speaking with an NPC and base the interaction around the result, or start speaking with the NPC and make rolls during key moments in the conversation? I ask because in my last session I tried to butter up a henchman in a bar to try and milk him for information but ended up too deep in the scenario and was subsequently poisoned and incapacitated. Only after did I realize I should have probably made a die roll somewhere to gauge my effectiveness.

How has it been doing everything remotely during covid times? For our lovely DMs: How do you keep your players on track, in particular when there is a time-based event going on? For example, I was DM'ing a time-based module where certain things happened after a designated amount of time passed. At the end of the campaign, my players were upset with me and said they felt like they didn't even get to play the full module, and my only response was "i tried getting you to do more, but you were too preoccupied with a side quest"

DM question! I'm DMing Curse of Strahd and for some reason my players (2 rangers, a bard, and a paladin/warlock) have decided to try and convert Barovia to communism. One of the rangers has even started reading the Wikipedia page for Karl Marx on session in character to an NPC. Phrases like "Eat the rich" and "The real plague on this land isn't the devil strahd, but the concentration of wealth with the few". How am I supposed to DM this and how in the world should NPCs react??

We killed a green dragon and got 28 platinum (bringing me to around 500gold). Our dm said you can buy whatever you want and all of us players got super excited. As the DM in our little group, I'm having trouble creating unique, easily identifiable npcs. I'm doing ok with voices, and do have notes on each with backstory to try to give them characters, but Murph's npcs are so easy to tell the difference and feel so organic in his storytelling. How much work behind the scenes goes into making them come alive the way he does? This definitely also applies to Caldwell and Emily for their campaigns, but even from the very beginning with Scoutmaster Denny Murph's npcs have been as real as the pcs.
