Rabbits actually have a digestive tract that is just inefficient, so they have to pass food through their body twice to break it down enough to actually absorb the nutrients. Like if they don't eat their poop they can get malnourished in the wild. This is not true of rabbits fed on commercial pellets because its formulated so the nutrients are more available.
