Short Rest: Ep. 91: Secrets, Secrets

Comments

If you somewhat liked "Edge of Tomorrow," I STRONGLY recommend you look up the Japanese novel it came from: All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka

Mike Yost

Murph, I disagree, killing Red offscreen WAS bullshit. Though it was a good move

1man2hands

I need to know if emo Pawpaw has the collar from Pendergreens or not

1man2hands

God I know right? It keeps freaking me out and nobody's even mentioning it!

1man2hands

I don't think it's Murph's fault because the Boobs had the chance to fully close Hell but specifically CHOSE not to

1man2hands

Love the phrase "bite the boobs in the ass"

1man2hands

This episode made me ugly cry 😭

itsellie

So much is making me uneasy about the upcoming plot but none so much as WHY IS BEVERLY DRINKING MILK NOW. When he offered a latte to Erdan it even turned out to be just steamed milk.

Bob Grannan

Well, I guess you have to google it. Look for Jibbers Crabst.

Dina

For fans of The Oatmeal, here is Matt Inman as a keynote speaker at the BAH festival discussing Our Lord and Savior Jibbers Crabst, a giant lobster living out by Saturn. Are crabsters the followers of Jibbers Crabst?

Dina

Only part-way through listening, but the discussion about hell and if it should exist is literally the plot of The Good Place 😂

Em

@Jake, would you say that a crabster is a selflish shellfish?

Maddy96

That is not the subclass they're using. They use the Unearthed Arcana version of Circle of Spores, which does an automatic amount of (poison, not necrotic) damage, and is used on the player's turn. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi2-vCX_evnAhVEhOAKHXbVDYsQFjAAegQIAxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.wizards.com%2F2018%2Fdnd%2Fdownloads%2FUA-3Subclasses0108.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1_u0iozhR0nCmAxtHYVDJ1

Kestrel

No it's not, they've been playing it that way but it's supposed to be used on the victim's turn. "When a creature you can see moves into a space within 10 feet of you or starts its turn there, you can use your reaction to deal 1d4 necrotic damage to that creature unless it succeeds on a Constitution saving throw against your spell save DC. " They also haven't been playing with the con save, probably because it slows things down and is bad for radio. @murph why can't moonshine react to the top of the last bad guy's turn to spore him, thus maximizing her chances of getting to use counterspell without giving up her chance to do spore damage?

The Good Place is my new favorite show. It's just perfect to me.

Kyle Riggs

The good place is so freaking good. Jason is my spirit animal. Bortles!!

Kyle Riggs

Spores is specifically used on your turn!

Kestrel

Couldn't @Emily still figure out a way with switching reactions such as using her reaction on the turn right before her next turn starts to spore if she didn't have to use Counterspell? It might be kind of Meta-Gamey but honestly when you're talking about THIALA that seems to be what you need. As long as she uses her reaction each round before her next turn comes about she would gain it back once her next turn... Or am I just completely wrong?

Nefer G

It's not being uncool! Just equal razzing!

Jenny T

Secret option three we just be cool

tacticalgrandma

I feel like we can't give Jake so much shit without giving Emily shit for saying 'like' every couple words. Anybody do a tally? 😂❤

Jenny T

Being able to switch between solid damage and counter spell is dope

Thom Boody

It really hurts to hear Emily upset at her character decision to learn counter spell. Like I don’t want her to have regrets because honestly it’s a great idea to have done. Like all the time you have to choose between a damage dealing spell and a support spell and I think that even if you cast counter spell once in the fight it’s going to be worth it. Like what Murph said about if you counter spell a divine word then amazing, I would totally give up that 20 damage to stop that. Because on all your other turns when you don’t counter spell you can still deal that damage. I think Emily is just worried because she is a big overthinker and it’s another thing to overthink during combat (which is a mood). Not only that I think it was a really cool way to go with the character and story regardless of any combat benefit

Brenton

I was waiting for Pendagreens to propose the entire time 🥺

Lunar Skirmisher .

I’ve only just started listening to naddpod a couple months ago and having caught up within the past couple weeks, can I just say that I could hear Murph through Pendergreens trying to help his partner’s character not being resigned to a specific fate. The storytelling is always amazing in naddpod, and I will always go to bat for Emily’s amazing character choices, but my favorite parts are when you can read into the deep caring y’all at the table have for each other. Such an amazing show. Made me cry at a possum’s reaction to drafting a will. 1000/10

Liz

I also really have to give my own critique on Murph, coming from someone whose been playing and DMing for a very long time. I really don't feel like Moonshine needed to give up so much just to get Counterspell. Mike Mearls himself has even stated that class based spell lists are more flavor than balance, of course I cannot find the direct quote atm, and so it's not that big of a deal to give a Druid Counterspell especially if they are the only full caster in the party. I would maybe tell them no if another player was playing an Abjuration Wizard so as to not step on their toes, but it's really not all that big of a deal in this situation. I love a lot of your rulings on stuff in the past and it is of course ultimately your game, but I really think it was not a fair trade. Moon shine having Counterspell has pros and cons for both the party and the bad guys, primarily that she can stop their shit but will be using a lot more spell slots that could be used for healing and other spells, but in the big picture it's not gonna be this OP power up that needs so many other sacrifices. It's a good idea and a great strategy on Emily's part though.

Matthew Atkins

I'm not 100% sure how it is for 5e, or if they mention it at all, but iirc in 3.5 a person who died and didnt worship any particular god would go to the plane that matched their alignment. That always seemed like the most reasonable solution for that issue.

Matthew Atkins

I 100% ship them and I don't see Hardwon not getting with her unless he dies at the end. It just feels narratively right.

Matthew Atkins

the second that crowns on moonshines head everyone appears to look like gnomes

Belle

Don’t worry, Caldwell, I know what DuckTales movie you’re talking about. It was one of my favorites as a kid.

Elizabeth Lees

Thiala already had her chance to chose what to do with the crown when she fought osmodius. Instead she decided her companions and stole his heart. I think if she gets the crown cell be like nice more power

Debra Wasson

Super glad that Gunther's return to the living didn't work out. I dont want Gunther to be dead specifically but I'm glad that Murph has introduced a reason for the characters to feel less inclined to just bring back anyone who dies.

Payt Suro

@Emily and @Murph the roleplaying moonshine, pawpaw and also pendergreen was completely beautiful.

All the roses for Emily this week, only crap i could give her is that my makeup looked great when i left for work and was a disaster when i got there lol

Amy Martin

Did NO ONE ELSE get the air of potential romantic tension between hardwon and jaina in their scene???? Dude I know its kinda sore I know but damn I SHIPPED them so hard in that moment. She is definitely his type lol Please tell me I'm not alone!!

shrimpy_senpai

@Emily Hey I don't know how much shit you get on twitter or others over what you do, but I can guarantee you that for every person criticizing you, a thousand more absolutely love what you gave us. You made me misty eyed for the third time in the campaign. You are a wonderful artist, and you are loved. Also regarding those discussions about the after life it is IMPERATIVE you guys watch The Good Place, you have no idea how relevant it gets to what you were talking about! And then you can talk about it all in a Mixed Bag :)

Garga Lenoir

Bahumia is absolutely covered in my spores for sure ~Moonshine

Thanks! I think I like it too, I just am nervous about making the wrong call when we are up against THIALA ~Emily

Its funny because if Emily was using ravnica circle of spores she'd never use spores over counterspell

I may be completely off base here and upset some people but...I’m shipping Moonshine and Pendergreens.

Terran Benedict

Just for the record, I think counterspell will end up super helpful too! :)

Katherine Clarke

@Emily - it sounds like one of the biggest reasons you're grieving for Moonshine is that she hasn't found her person in the world, but you also said she has an unspoken crush that not even Murph knows about. If that character felt the same way would she have a reason not to break all our hearts and go to hell?

31:20. That's the timecode for ya Murph. 👍🏽

Jay Dragonborn, Guardian of the Vibe, Honoring the Cock

Thought so when someone gets the crown they can shape hell to their will right?? What's to stop moonshine from creating a paradise there and move the resistance to hell. Potentially forcing Theala to fight them on their home turf so to speak. Also I picture Hellshine like covered in black vines and foliage ala poison ivy. Could be dope.

GREYFOX!!!!!

I think she gave that up in order to have Paw Paw be her familiar

Kestrel

I believe counterspell will prove to be invaluable to Moonshine and the crew and turn out to be another shrewd move by Emily.

Jeffrey Steck, Lord of the Fjord

Purgatory is what they want to create in the first level of hell. I think the characters need to watch bahumia's version of the Good Place to better debate the afterlife.

Canid

Hey Emily! I think a level 10 feature in the UA Circle of Spores druid is that they can throw a 10ft cube of their spores 30 feet as a bonus action. Any creature that starts their turn in that space takes full spores damage. It's pretty ineffective if creatures can move as a legendary action but hey, two things are better than one

I hate that the horseman of death said “reflections of the material plane.” The fey got hit too

Turner Tush

Selflish

Sawyer Rogers

Wait Murph what if moonshine "shroomstrides" where she can fly around her fungal network for a great reward for her throwing her spores around since episode 1 a goal she had was to do so. Hope you see this yall are awesome :)

Sick as in cool haha

Nicole Jordan

Emily is so sad about counterspell I feel so bad I thought it was a sick choice!

Nicole Jordan

If anyone gives Emily shit I will personally 1v1 them

Kestrel

@Emily: *cough cough* because any conception of an eternal afterlife is necessarily torture

Benjamin Stalnaker

I just started the hellfire saga I'm catching up! Much love from NC!

SoupLightning

You’re too good to us!
