The Fifth book in the series opens with Nua Calen Aiwenor's response to the proposal of Prince Rasgen, and proceeds through the grand revival of Komestra, the rising threats of the Starwatcher temples, and the response of the other city states to the growing power of the Duchessa turned self proclaimed Prince.
West of the border, the God-Emperor continues his decline and his sons continue to grow more erratic and violent as Nua's curse, passed to them through the sacrifice of the Lady Sobella, eats away at their minds.
The Pain Children grow ever more comfortable with what they learn from the monster they call 'Teacher' and and the man who wasn't there, Taen the unknowable, continues to act for Prince Isaura, while the Queen of Vexation makes use of her two years to target the woman she deems a threat to all that she holds dear.
