[3 min video] Patreon Tier Changes For Juniors ($10)

TLDR: Anyone that's been a $10 patreon in the past will continue to be able to play the newest version for $10. Only new patrons that never paid before will have to pay $20 the first time they download the latest release.

Hey everyone,

Steam requires us to have all platforms equally priced and with Act 3 releasing on Steam soon, the full game will cost $20 on there. ($10 Act 2 + $10 Act 3)

That's why we have to switch the Junior Tier ($10) download to be patch only. This means you will be able to add this to your game easily and then play the newest release as always. It changes nothing in terms of your gameplay experience, it's simply a way for us to prove that you have been a patron last month.

Senior Tier ($20) and higher will continue to get the full game download in addition to the patch only.

If you already have Act 3 Part 2 downloaded, nothing changes for you. You will simply download the patch for Act 3 Part 3 once it's out (Mid September) and you will be able to play as usual. Don't worry we'll make a tutorial about how to apply the patch.

If you don't have the full game up until Act 3 Part 2 by the time Act 3 Part 3 comes out, you will need to switch to Senior Tier ($20) for at least one month in order to get the full game once. From then on you will only need patch downloads for each part.

With Act 3 Part 3, we intend to release the CK launcher.
The launcher will check for your total spent, and as long as you're currently a junior ($10) or higher, and have spent a total of over $20 on this Patreon, you will get the latest update as soon as it comes out. This means that even if you missed Act 3 Part 2, you can still get the newest version for just $10.

If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a comment below and I'll try to answer what I can.

Thank you guys for your understanding,

Steve

[3 min video] Patreon Tier Changes For Juniors ($10)

Comments

Paid for the Junior annual subscription on Patreon to get access to the new content and support the game. So technically I've paid more than $20 but still don't see the new content, just my old Steam saves. Help?

Matt

people have already said adding the new part causes them issues, game is buggy at best of times, without further issues caused by patching the game, so yeah a full download always a better option, and they do have to pay double for that now, so the hate is fully justified

understandable. But im still buying on steam even i subbed on patreon. haha. just happy to be a part of this. its not that much of money anyway. considering the content and great plots. more on Lindsey letsgo! alternatives on Nora, Samantha, Penelope, and Lauren!

Alfinkho

I don’t get the hate people they made it so that if You already are a Patreon member you don’t have to pay extra to play the new parts you just add the new part that’s it

LukevdA

Thank god I thought I had to up my Patreon cost even more but it ends not needed

LukevdA

I'm curious of Android version, As you said steam required developer for same price sell on every platform, but I'd like to play it on my Android phone. Is that means you'll also release update patch for Android players? And I also bought Act 2 on steam and all of I done that because I love this game and want to support you guys, but now I feel steam is an asshole.

Indeed, I would like some clarification on that also. I am an annual contributor and would like to know how it affects future downloads? I enjoy this game and the fact that updates to it come around pretty quickly it keeps me coming back for more. I would hate for this to have to change.

Mina Lenshenko

I got the Junior but paid for 1 year in advance (100 or 120 usd I think). Update should be patch because If you download the full game every month its a bit of a hassle especially if you are not located in US and download speed is a bit slow.

most developers have issues, a lot of devs cant do monthly updates either we are lucky enough to get them even if it means the first day is a bit buggy but its always fixed within 24hours, of course the extra money will most likely help but only new patreons will have to pay more current $10 patreons will not have to pay more as long as you keep the game installed.

connor roney

with as many issue that have been going on with your last few updates is this suppose to try to help?

Yes that’s exactly true!

College Kings

That’s correct!

College Kings

from what i understand so far as long as you have the game right now in future when it goes to $20 that will be for the game + patch where as current $10 will get the patch which includes the latest update, so keep the game installed on your pc then every new patch you just add to your current download, or if you have a lifetime spend of $20 you will be able to download the new collegekings desktop version of the game which i believe is automatically updated for any new gameplay.

connor roney

I agree with this, and we try to reward most tiers as much as we can. It's hard to do with monthly releases of our size because they require a lot of work. If creators have higher prices on Steam they are breaking Steam guidelines and risk getting banned, we can't risk that, I hope you understand.

College Kings

It does apply to every dev that has the game on steam. If they have the game on steam for more than $10, they are required to up the Patreon, if they don't, they risk getting banned from Steam. We intend to cap the steam price at $20 for now so it won't go up again. I agree that It'd be better for people to get the game for $10, but we can't risk getting banned on Steam, I hope you understand. I felt that this would be fair since all long term patrons would not experience any change.

College Kings

Sorry but this is just wrong and unfair, if Steam require you to have all platforms equal priced, wouldn't this apply to every dev on Patreon, yet only you have increased your price for the full download, almost every other Dev has $10 at an entry point in which to download the game, and so what if a newbie comes and on first month gets game for $10, isn't it better to take their $10 rather than them go and just download the game from a pirate site. Also when act 4 comes out on Steam will the price of the full download have to go up again?

This is dumb and short sighted there are plenty of larger games on Patreon that do not change the model because they went to Steam. A well made game we'll have people following for years. Having avid followers means they end up paying more than buying the just a game they are contributing to development long-term. Most developers don't stop at one game or they continue to add to the game they're working on. You need to take a look at some more of the successful players in the space and understand why they have so many patreons following them. But I'll fast forward it for you they reward all their tiers for supporting them. There's no only these tiers for entry gain access to content there's just access to versions and the ability to engage with the creater at the higher tiers/polls etc.

Troy Avidano

i really like the launcher-concept :)

Ville Topi

Thank you!

College Kings

The TLDR really clarifies where you are coming from. Nice one.

Sol The Destroyer

Act 4 is already in the working. And yeah Junior tier gets that, nothing changes. It's just that you need to have act 3 part 3 to get act 4 part 1, which you simply get by being a patron this month.

College Kings

Thank you for being so understanding.

College Kings

So if there is an Act 4 (which hopefully there will be) does the junior tier still get that via a patch or a full download?

I understand why this is happening and how unfair it is on your side as well as ours. I’m not going to blame you for steam being a jerk.

Mike Bean

It 100% does and that's why anyone being a patron before is getting the game from the $10 tier. It's only for new people that never paid before that need to pay $20.

College Kings

This was due to engine issues and should be fixed. The launcher should fix any issues with patches. This will shouldn't change anything for continuous patrons except that you either download patch only's or use the launcher.

College Kings

Anyone that has paid for the previous part will be able to play the next part for just $10. Nothing changes. It's only so that people who pledge $10 for the first time, can't download the full game for just $10 on patreon.

College Kings

I would like to point out that with a junior tier someone will be paying 30$ for each act as they arr shared in 3 parts. People that have been here since the beginning of act 3 for example have spent 30$ and a steam customer only 10$. I feel that this premium was justifying the full downloadable game and early acces.

Yeah, still not thrilled with this, especially in light of the last launch where patch updating the game resulted in massive crashes and I needed a clean install of it to even progress. If this is the general theory going forward, it's likely to be my last month as a patron

Actually I have to stand with those above, this seems a bit unfair towards your supporters here on Patreon as that is something billed monthly no matter if there's a release or not while Steam is a one time purchase in this case. Furthermore I don't think you can really compare Patreon and Steam as a platform, you can compare Steam and Epic Games etc but I wouldn't say Patreon is such a thing and nothing that should bother Steam. Looking at what is defined as "Act 3" that is the Europe trip basically and from what I am aware of the release of that have been split up over 3 months here on Patreon meaning that "Junior" tiers have then paid $10 times 3 which doesn't take a genius to figure out that equals $30 for the whole of "Act 3" for your "Junior" tier Patreons and if you then plan to only charge $20 on Steam for the equal amount of content in the update it's quite easy to figure out that those in the "Junior" tier have already paid more than those on Steam will. Bottom line, I think you've made a great AVN which is interesting and you also tend to listen to the community and you have an helpful team whenever bugs are found within the new updates (which we all know have been a few) however I think that this would be quite an unfair decision towards your Patreons.

TheUnknown

I agree

Jason Brookshire

Edit: I wrote after reading it first, then watched the vid, so I stand corrected. so does that mean going forward, there will be launchers for junior tiers who been around for long? Steve, I am sorry but I think you have to speak for your patrons here, because I don't think that mathematically makes sense. Steam should have no problem Junior tier getting full game download shouldn't be a factor for Steam, if their game goes for $20 dollars for 2 Acts, if Patreons would be paying 3 parts per act, making the paying $60 dollars for the full game. We are paying premium of $40 in that case, justifying us for getting the earlier release, and having the full game options help us out with patch only being glitchy at first day release. If anything, steam should be upping their prices, given we pay such a huge premium. I really hope you reconsider.
