I lived in that area of South Carolina for most of my life. I was in 7th grade over in liberty at the time. Susan fooled no one. Not even my classmates and I. We all knew she did it from the jump.

This is one of the most upsetting stories for me, in many ways. In no way do I think what Susan did was ok, but I think she truly was unwell and didn't know what else to do. Often when someone is unwell, they're impulsivity gets the best of them, and I think that's what happened initially. I really do think she felt instant regret, but that doesn't excuse the racial divide she infused in the story to cover up her decision. It's upsetting that she was unwell, but it's even more upsetting that she chose "the easy target" to blame in a "black male". Especially with everything that has been going on, its heartbreaking to hear how she targeted such a vulnerable group because it would be the most believable suspect. The whole situation is undoubtedly a heartbreaking one. I wish she had gotten help before all this spiralled. I'm not sure if this could've been prevented, but it is possible. But what's done is done, and that's the part that hurts the most.

She never fooled me. I told my husband she did it when I saw her on TV that she did it.
