“But–mommy!”
Sophie’s objections fall on deaf ears, and she only wishes she could be surprised. Her accident had left little room for dignity or defense. She could plead for an hour about how she didn’t need diapers, but the bright yellow stain that’d ruined her skirt and trickled all the way down her stockings undermined every word.
“The only ‘Butts’ I want to hear are ‘Your butt belongs in diapers’,” Mommy scolds. “Honestly–I should have known that letting you wear big girl underwear was a mistake.”
“I…” Sophie starts to say. “Please? I don’t need diapers! I can make it to the potty!”
“Can you?” Mommy demands. “So you ruined your clothes on purpose?”
“I–um–” Stammering, Sophie tries to find an excuse. “No…”
Mommy refuses to relent. “Did someone else make you go potty on yourself?”
“No,” Sophie repeats, watching as the weak walls she’s built to protect her big-girl status are washed away. “But…”
“So you had an accident,” Mommy finishes. “Right?”
Sophie has no words, and can only nod. Mommy’s right. Her excuses, her unwillingness to face the truth, it’d all trickled away, like so much pee down her thighs.
“I’d…I’d like a diaper, please, Mommy,” she says, finally. “And…thank you.”
