Futureporn December 2024 Progress Report

Guys I'm depressed. It's winter and many days are too wet and cold to ride my bicycle (my favorite activity). It's only going to get colder and there's going to be more ice and snow. Cabin fever. Some days all I can do is jog circles in my apartment to keep myself from going crazy. I never enjoy this part of the year but I am getting through it one day at a time. Having something to focus on and work towards has been essential, and I'm grateful for Futureporn being that something for me.

For the past 6 months, I've been building up Futureporn infrastructure. Infrastructure that will help Futureporn grow and serve more traffic. Infrastructure that will allow Futureporn to compete with big company porn sites.

I want to build the YouTube of VTuber porn. A place where videos get uploaded to and last for a very, very long time.

I have a belief that it's important to do the work myself, and this is a big part of why Futureporn progress is so slow. Instead of paying $100's of dollars every month to upgrade to Strapi's cloud hosted solution and getting stuck in a cycle of endless license upgrades for more money, I stripped out that Content Management System and learned how to build a site atop a Postgres database. Instead of spending $100's of dollars every month for one of the many services that handles authentication & authorization, I learned how to self-host an open source Open ID Connect server. Instead of fast tracking deployments and paying a premium for cloud services that abstract the complexity of microservices, I'm diving in and learning the inner workings of Kubernetes so I can do it myself.

It's not easy to do any of these things but I think it's important to be able to do work at lower levels, know how to fix things when they go wrong, and build new functionality without having to pay people for it. There's a quote I love, "There is no expert. I am the expert."

I admit I have not balanced my time in regards to learning things vs. fixing things.

For the past several months, my ability to push new Futureporn updates has been broken. It's my fault for failing to plan a release schedule, and getting caught up in feature creep after feature creep. The next update is going to be a big one, and I'm not saying that to raise hype. It's not good how big the update is. It's size and scope is making the deployment incredibly complex, and I'm releasing late.

I'm not happy with where things are right now, because a lot of site functionality has fallen apart. I know people have noticed because we've seen the same issues raised in Futureporn Discord again and again. I'm sorry I let it get like this and I am going to make some changes in my workflow to return to a better release cadence.

In the past I would be devastated by missing a deadline, but not today. Being upset with myself is not a solution, so I'm not going there.

There's a lot of room for improvement but for a moment I'm not focusing on that. I'm thinking long term goals and how we're going to get there.

2030, Futureporn is operating out of a physical office with fiber internet and self-hosting racks of servers with SSDs. Patrons have been uploading VODs to the archive, reaching for 100% archival, and sharing their favorite clips with friends on social media. Futureporn has basic teledildonics support and the site is funded by patrons and sex toy affiliate links.

2035, Futureporn has several employees and operates three datacenters spread around the globe. VTuber porn has been served to Low Earth Orbit and the Moon.

2040, Futureporn is a household brand that everyone secretly knows but is too ashamed to talk about. VTuber porn streamed from Futureporn reaches Mars.

2050, Some kinky shit happens.

2054, the year when Futureporn has reached all it's goals. VTuber porn is streaming on Uranus. Millions of creators and fans share VTuber content via Futureporn every day, and engage in all the wild and wacky VR/AR/XR/NeuraLink/Subconcious/Astral/LucidDream/Fullbody Teledildonics sex stuff we haven't even thought of in 2024.

SOON™. I'm close to a release and I'm on a strict feature freeze. In other words, nothing else is getting added and I'm focused entirely on connecting all the loose ends required to publish what I have done. Don't expect anything amazing, don't expect perfection, just expect a tiny iterative move towards a brighter future.
