Chapter 903: Defier

Farrah stepped out of the portal onto sand. She was on a beach that ran from turquoise water up to rainforest. A trail went off though the trees and a pier led into the water where a cluster of bungalows sat on stilts. The beach wrapped around a lagoon, sheltering the over-water bungalows. Looking back over the trees, several small mountains were visible, waterfalls spilling off their sides.

Jason stepped out of the portal to join her, the archway then vanishing into the sand. She looked up at the clear sky, feeling the fresh sea breeze take the edge off the sun’s heat.

“I feel odd,” she said. “Something is… my powers are gone.”

“Yes,” Jason said.

“But I don’t feel uncomfortable, as if they were being suppressed. They’re just… not there.”

“When I was making this planet, I didn’t pay specific attention to every little detail. It was more like creating a seed with certain parameters and letting the laws of physics and magic sort themselves out as it grew. There are a few places I did pay closer attention to, though, and this is one of them.”

“A prison?”

Jason let out a wincing laugh.

“That’s a little hurtful, after the effort I put in. Does it look like a prison?”

“Then why suppress powers?”

“They’re not suppressed. They just don’t exist here. This island is named Refuge, and it’s what it says on the tin. It’s a place where I, and the people most important to me, can get away from all the travails of the cosmos. It’s about letting go of the responsibilities that we have to deal with everywhere else. Here, we take things slow. No powers. You’ll even find that your speed and strength are capped, if you try to push them. Even my prime avatar is affected.”

“I don’t know if Sophie is going to like that.”

“She’ll get over it. Shade has been working on his cocktail game.”

“Mixology, Mr Asano.”

“Sorry. He’s been working on his mixology.”

Farrah stared at Jason’s shadow.

“Is he never not in there?” she asked.

“Uh…”

Farrah looked at her own shadow, then back up at Jason.

“Just so you know,” he said hastily as he sped up his walking speed, “I’m still working on options to fix our bond. Overmind Jason is, anyway. Prime avatar Jason is still here.”

“Then prime avatar Jason needs a talk about boundaries and where his shadow familiar goes.”

“Ooh, I bet the view from that bluff is excellent,” he responded, speeding up again.

“What happened to taking things slow?” she called after him.

While Jason’s avatar guided Farrah through the rainforest trails, Jason delved into the magic of the bond linking them together. It was distinct from the connections he had with his familiars, where he was the origin of the bond. His connection with Farrah had originated with her ability to bond with people, acquired when she resurrected as an outworlder. It had reacted with the changes in Jason until they noticed the bond and had ultimately chosen to enhance it.

Now that Jason had a vastly powerful transcendent aspect, his power was trying to make use of that bond. And, as much as Jason was loath to admit it, the more tyrannical aspects of his subconscious were trying to subjugate her through it. That was not something he was going to put up with. He explored the magic involved, gaming out possible ways the bond could be manipulated.

While he was doing this, Farrah and his avatar reach the main buildings of the island resort he’d created. The buildings were made from bamboo, wood and natural stone, and set to maximise the feel of a rainforest grove. Several creeks and streams flowed under little bridges and even under the buildings, and a river flowed nearby. Farrah spotted bungalows, indoor and open air lounges, a bar and a games room. In the open-front buildings by the river she saw canoes and what looked like wooden jet skis.

“Jason, this is all very nice, but this is not what I’m here for.”

“I know. I’m working on it.”

“Aren’t you basically a god here?”

“Nothing that limited. But it’s not like they put you through a two-week orientation course when you become half transcendent. I still have a lot to learn, and I can’t afford to make a mistake here. Not with you.”

They made their way deep into the island. Trails of packed earth and fallen leaves gave way to rough-cut stone steps as they began a gradual ascent. Finally, Jason brought her to a grotto half set into a cave. Water spilled down over rocks, into a pool of pristine water, from where it drained off into a little creek. The rocks were flat, and many were covered in soft-looking grasses and moss. Near the entrance was a gazebo of wood and bamboo, containing a picnic table, benches and a grill.

“I want to bring everyone here, in time,” Jason said. “I want this place to be where we come to be together and forget about all the troubles the cosmos sees fit to pile onto us. And I want to start by fixing something that I’ve put on you, however inadvertently.”

“You can fix the bond?”

“I have some options. The power disparity between us is a problem, I won’t lie. My power wants to make you obey.”

“Then tell it no.”

Jason grinned.

“I was thinking the same thing,” he told her. “Obviously, making you subject to my will is unacceptable. After looking for some kind of workable compromise, however, I realised that just isn’t viable. So, if only extremes will work, I wondered what would happen if we went the other way?”

“Other way?”

A system window popped up in front of Farrah.

-------

-------

Farrah stared at the window for a long time.

“What is this?” she asked finally.

“We both know that I can lose my way. I’m better, now, but the future is long and uncertain. You’ve always been the one I could trust when I couldn’t trust myself. That’s hard if you don’t have the power to stop me when I need to be stopped. This would give it to you.”

“You have so much power. You can’t use it outside of your private universe yet, but some day you will have that power.”

“Yes. And you know I’ve been worried for a long time about not having a check on that power. I’m asking you to be the one that holds me to account.”

“Immortality.”

“Yes.”

“True immortality.”

“Yeah. You’ll outlive the sun. We can have a sandwich to celebrate.”

He wandered over to the gazebo, making his way up the short stairs. A tray of sandwiches was sitting on the table, along with a large pitcher and two glasses.

“Not to pressure you or anything, but there’s some iced tea up here was well. It’s peach.”

“Are you attempting to bribe me into immortality with a light lunch?”

“It’s immortality. I shouldn’t have to sell it, right? But if you don’t like the immortality options, I can sever the bond altogether.”

“It feels like this should be more of a conversation. Immortality isn’t a small thing.”

“No,” he agreed, giving her a sad smile. “No, it’s not. I only missed fifteen years or so, and that was so long in the lives of my family back on Earth. I never intended to stay away so long. And that’s just a drop in the ocean compared to what immortality has to offer. People will live out entire lives while we remain unchanging. We’ll love them, for the time they have, and lose them. It won’t be small thing.”

“You’ve thought about this a lot.”

“That, and there’s a lot of books and TV shows exploring the idea.”

“Is it stupid to hesitate at the idea of immortality?”

“Of course not. And that’s without even broaching the topic of what this means for you and me. Come up and have a sandwich and we’ll hash it out.”

***

Jason, Clive, Travis and the Cloudweaver were in a workshop, in the Yaresh branch of the Magic Research Association. They were seated around a table on which rested Jason’s cloud flask. Jason flicked it and smoke started pouring out, black instead of the usual white. It formed a cloud that filled the room to the high ceiling before it stopped spreading.

Points of light appeared in the smoke like stars in a night sky, silvery lines linking them together in constellations. As more and more stars and lines appeared, it went from constellations to a celestial spider’s web to something far too complex and dense to be either.

“Normal so far,” the Cloudweaver said as they observed the process. Then their eyes went wide as some of the points started changing colour. The dots of light and their connecting lines started turning blue and orange, slowly at first but rapidly accelerating. They glowed brighter as they went, making the observers lose track of specific points as the light diffused in the black smoke. By the time it was done, it looked like a blue and orange eye, glowing from within the dark.

“Well, it’s certainly dramatic,” the Cloudweaver said.

“It’s Jason,” Clive said. “It always works like this. We’re lucky the mirage chamber didn’t just blast a massive aura projection over the city. Again.”

“I’m going to need my tools to get a better look at what’s going on here,” Cloudweaver said. “Did you say they have a mana spectrum prism matrix?”

“They do,” Clive said. “They’re bringing it down now. I thought a localised refinement differentiator would be useful as well.”

“That’s a good idea,” the Cloudweaver said.

“That’s my cue to leave,” Jason said. “It sounds like magic Star Trek in here. Have fun with your deflector dish, and don’t get too pokey or the flask will smite you.”

Jason got up and walked out, leaving the other three behind.

“He was joking about the smiting, right?” Travis asked.

“Probably,” Clive said. “It wouldn’t hurt to be careful as we go, though.”

***

Jason left the trio to examine his cloud flask, one of the last tasks before he and his friends packed up to leave. Much of the reunion group had already left, having their own preparations to make before the expedition to Earth. Jason had several stops to make, including rounding up the Earthlings in Estercost and anchoring the link between worlds, which he would do in the Storm Kingdom.

Leaving the main workshop building, Jason headed for a nearby loading area. Normally used for bringing in supplies to the workshops, Humphrey and Neil were preparing a huge pile of goods. Once Jason got the flask back, it would all be loaded into a cloud vehicle. While heading in their direction, he spotted Danielle Geller and changed course.

“Danielle. We never had a chance to catch up properly.”

“It seemed like you were having a busy week.”

“Tell me about it. Adventure Society briefings. Parts one and two of the Clive sessions, which I’m assuming will continue until I die.”

“Aren’t you immortal?”

“Don’t remind me. I just convinced someone else to join the immortal club.”

“Farrah?”

“Yeah.”

“How is she?”

“Asleep. The process of change was one thing, then it was like her halted advancement was unleashed all at once. Half of her abilities advanced simultaneously, which was apparently rough. She’s still a step or two from gold.”

“But immortal now.”

“She’ll have time, yes.”

Danielle shook her head.

“I remember when Rufus Remore came to visit me in Greenstone, telling me he’d met an unusual young man. And now that young man is casually mentioning how he’s made a woman he once resurrected immortal now.”

“It was the Reaper on the resurrection, and circumstance on the other thing. It’s not like I’m running around, handing out immortality tickets.”

“Well, if you do, let me know. There was something you wanted to discuss?”

“Some things I’d like your advice on, if you can spare a few moments.”

“Certainly. Shall we take walk?”

“I could show you my universe. It’s not as big as some, but I could whip it out right here.”

They turned at hearing Neil laugh and saw him pointing at them. A disgruntled Humphrey fished a gold spirit coin from his pocket and handed it over.

“I do believe that you just lost my son a bet,” Danielle said. “Probably best not to ask what about.”

“Oh, I think I know.”

“As do I, sadly. Fascinated as I am to see your own little universe, it might be best to take a regular walk instead of nipping through a portal together.”

“I think you’re right.”

Jason's still scared of himself getting too much power.. Knowing Farrah will always be there to slap him down and give him a good talking too is a confort..

True

This defier thing is stupid, sorry. They are immortal, letting her have that much control over him, forever, isnt smart. The best friends could be enemies after a thousand years, you never know. Otherwise i liked the chapter and direction the story is taking....minus Jason whining about having too much power constantly.

RadiantSpren

It’s a planet, hell an entire solar system, of course it has a Fiji.

MrTopHatCat

I agree I think it’s more an ability to stop his godhood so that she can talk to him as a person without the power controlling him

MrTopHatCat

Thx for the chapter

Kconraw

Anyone else getting withdrawals from Shirt's absence this week? Hope things are falling into place with your Mom, Shirt. We definitely miss you!

Lora Greenberg

Does this make Farrah the first Defier?

Phillip Masusock

It feels like he is setting Farrah up so she can shoot him in the back of the head when he saves the world by using his bug control communication powers to become a monster. Oh wait. I'm thinking of the wrong story. But yeah, as this story progresses, I get the impression the grand finale will be a Pyrrhic victory for him.

Philip Pleiss

Farrah: “Aren’t you basically a god here?” Jason: “Nothing that limited." Well, it might be a bit late to worry, but that seems to be something she would have commented on, awhile ago. So she seen a need for him to have someone to limit him, at least a little.

Thomas Froehling

Okay, several great moments in this chapter. I love the laughs I get out of this series so much.

Brad S

I prefer it this way compared to Jason whining about if he is to powerful or whatever new "what if" problem he thinks up.

Razeel Nightfall

I think Jason gave Farrah too much power. He didn’t make them equals. He made her more power in many situations. And while his power, overall, is currently greater, that will change when she’s a full transcendent. What happens if she turns evil. He would be powerless to stop her. He looked at her as his moral compass—but compasses break. This was really short sighted. He could have made a much more balanced situation that didn’t make himself weaker than her. This isn’t the same as the Sophie situation. He made her more powerful for the moment, but not forever and not in an insurmountable way. He made Sophie outside of his control. He put Farrah in a position to eventually control him. Given infinite time, which they have.

Erik Hyrkas

👎

Frederick

It was only a matter of time that Jason made a sly joke to the milf known as Danielle. Neil can always predict Jason’s motives when it came to chicks.

Ender419

I completely forgot about the upgrade waiting for the cloud flask! You just gave me something else to look forward to.

Timothy Black

I’m curious if we’ll see a gold rank cloud flask upgrade pretty soon especially with Cloudweaver geeking out about it. Maybe they’ll even give Jason some fun upgrades. I feel like we’ll probably see it before Jason heads back to Earth if only because he’ll need it upgraded for his item set and it’ll be so much harder to get the reagents on Earth.

Jacob Conway

I think defier is just a way so he don't control her. It probably very limited in ways to stop him. I honestly don't see her really stopping him with force more like the good angel telling him to think first. And honestly do you really think she gonna go change his domains I don't see that happening. The description is very vague on what aspect she effects so let's wait to see the full thing

Justin saldana

I love how Jason's learned from the mistakes of the GABs! Making a section of his Astral Kingdom turn them all mortal while within it will ensure they don't lose their 'mortal sensibilities' as they live forever. If they start to lose perspective, they can just take a mortal vacation in Jason's soul, lol.

S_Ally

I hope Farrah doesn't become a baby sitter

Lora Greenberg

Anyone get the feeling Jason's universe looks like Fiji or Gilligan's island?

Lora Greenberg

I havnt listened to that book in a couple of months but I'm fairly certain she mostly mentioned him probably hating her when she comes back because of what it will mean. I don't think it will be necessarily her being agro but a war that will cost Jason a lot

Austin Wolf

It did seem to, yes. Bit of a throwaway line for it

Joanna

At least it isn’t Rejector.

Daniel Wills

I would agree but the simple prospect that out there in the cosmos I wouldn’t be alone would be enough to keep me going. She could meet another immortal and have a family if she wanted and know how to properly guide their children towards their own immortality like Dawns parents did with her. Immortality is only scary when nobody you meet will ever be allowed to follow you forever

WizardOfTheStyx

Wasn’t it either stated or hinted that Jason and Dawn had a thing for one another, and that Dawn is waiting on Jason to reach her level so they can be together?

Montizuma59

Farrah must be annoyed that Jason couldn't come up with a better title than defier. As I recall he wasn't thrilled with that appellation when the builder cult applied it to him. Loved the chapter though.

mockery jones

There is no specific point. He reaches Gols during the process of fixing the Cosmic Throne

Blai Navarro

Am I the only one who wouldn't want to be immortal? There's something comfortable in the idea that one day I'll close my eyes and that it. No more feeling, no more anything. Just the end.

DarthPineapples

I think Jason is setting up to Immortalize his entire Team as Voices/Defiers of his will. At first I thought he was set up to be the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse, but now that he's setting up a retinue I'm not so sure

Harrison Glickman

Neil had me laughing out loud lmao

Kasey Lindenmayer

I'm hoping the Farrah arc is setting her up to be long term love interest because she's so far the only one with any kind of parity with Jason. I know it was stated long ago that they aren't romantic but I'm hoping that changed over time.

LiteWvr

You may thank him later. For anyone who hasn't dragged themselves through mid-late Wheel of Time, a story this size seriously bogs down if you don't either encapsulate important moments or just drop parts of the story entirely. Ill take this approach over wandering through three books worth of sidestory mist any day

Adrian

whats the specific chapter that jason hits gold rank i feel like i missed it?

Bitburger

I still want to know what comes next. I’m listening to book 6 again. Mr. North is talking about what comes after the link is repaired. I don’t think it’s the messengers. Dawn keeps talking about it in book 7. She says. The next time you see me, run. It’s gotta be the hunt for the artifact. But what comes? The astral kings? also, what he did be damned. Mr. North took the steps needed to save the world from what ever it is. I hope he’s still alive

Josh Vanderpool

The rules make it confusing what happens when she dies and reforms in his astral kingdom. He can’t hurt her, but does she have any way to get out of the kingdom? If he wanted to do something bad out in the cosmos, couldn’t he just not let her out?

Spencer Miller

Excellent chapter, though I hope we hear that conversation about what it means for them in some form at some point. Between immortality and the nature of the power, they’re virtually guaranteed to spend millennia in full conflict eventually. In legal terms, the spirit of the law is friendly, but the letter of it is inevitably aggressive.

Spencer Miller

Couple of typos but great chapter. Thanks 😊

Lesley Holmes

Dam I m hyped to read from Team buskit on earth !!!

Danny

tbf she is ultimately still susceptible to Jason's power, Jason just gave her a bit more control and freedom while showcasing a great amount of trust, she can't truly stop him if it comes down to it, she doesn't have the power or scale to truly do so and even at diamond her ability to function on that level will be severely more limited than Jason's. If she takes it too far she only needs to die once for Jason to regain absolute control, so while she technically holds the right to say no and question his decisions without fear of domination. Jason still holds the power to imprison her forever if she takes it too far.

Daniel is ŁØNE

Nah, outside his domains sure but even in those domains her scope is limited to the space she currently exists in and Jason has more than one domain. Also while Jason himself can't harm her, other people can and if she ever takes it too far Jason has the connections to have her killed which would force her back into his astral kingdom where he still has absolute control and can trap her forever. Jason made her a sudo-arbiter for his actions but she can't abuse that power since all it takes her dying once for Jason to win while Jason's avatars can die countless times over eternity while slowly plotting her downfall if she should over extend her will.

Daniel is ŁØNE

I guess Farrah could be called “TheFirstDefier” 😉

Connor

Technically she can only really tell him No, you can't really beat a universe and to Jason atp physical pain is nothing more than a convenient suggestion. The type of stuff that can actually cause him pain function more on the mental and soul level rather than the physical so she infact can not beat him into submission, Farrah just has the right to say when Jason is overdoing it and the power to undo his overbearing actions to a degree.

Daniel is ŁØNE

I totally think she'd be a good voice and having Jason power as backup would be helpful but I'm guessing she chose defier too

Kalanaere

I love how we advance in the story with little stories that reconstruct the friendship and care on the characters in the background. Shade mixing cocktails, Neil and Humphrey betting, Jason asking Danielle for advice. Thank you.

Fabienne Bedry

My impression is that the butterflies are already autonomous enough to avoid allies.

Temp One

He can't die and she can't affect anything in his astral kingdom, only paet of his domains. Seems balanced.

Wheels42

Such a great turn for Farrah. I love this character and everything she means to Jason.

Diviknight

Storm kingdom makes sense. It might be closely linked already since that’s where the magic dumped him when he rode the wave back from earth. Plus he probably feels like he can trust the Rimaros family to protect it from exploitation. All of the ruling family he interacted with were well-intentioned and kept their promises to their people.

Diviknight

Excuse me while I whip this out. 😂

DirePants

One interesting application of Farrah's Defier abilities would for Jason to use one of his few powers that are prone to friendly fire. Farrah can happily dance in a swarm of deadly butterflies, as one example.

Philipp Battenberg

I don't really see how Farrah having all the power is better than Jason having it. It should Balance their powers not put him at her mercy.

Hornbach

She obtained an outworlder ability that allowed her to form a sympathetic bond with Jason while he was on Earth. It gave her the ability to understand his references amongst other helpful things. When Jason ascended the connection between them changed to what it is now.

ouroboros

I like Farrah, but I'm not sure if was wise to do that. Forever is a long time. That's quite the bet on her. Perhaps he's the one that will break but perhaps not. Maybe she does. Guess we'll see. It's not like the bond can't be changed. Just gotta worry about sanctioning poorly. A compromise between the two. A cycle dependent on her would be interesting. Like the more unstable Jason is the more of a defier she is? That could solve the issue. He just couldn't do a compromise because she's too weak he seemed to imply. Her ability to negate could have interesting interactions. A binary set like that does have limited permutations though. If he could make the power a superposition you could have either until she tries to use her power.

ouroboros

I'm loving everything except where Jason is anchoring the bridge... I had always thought he'd anchor the bridge in that Quarry town with the waterfall.

Magus Iferluc

“I could show you my universe. It’s not as big as some, but I could whip it out right here.” That made me snort out my vodka all over my couch. Thanks shirt.

Michael Deleon

In this chapter it says that the link formed by Farrahs ability to do the power bond. However in book 9 (I think feel free to correct me) Jason says the bond is there because that is how the Reaper attached her soul to his to send it to earth.

Mike Zebill

So now Farrah is basically the final arbiter of Jason's actions and can CTRL+ALT+DELETE anything he does as an Astral King. Also none of Jason's Avatars can harm her.

Tommy S

I don't see anything about it giving the ability to kill a Transcendent being, it only said it would make her immune to his power.

Sean C Jackson

Dunno, but it will likely pose a danger to Jason's Avatar since it can feed directly on the soul I believe. Plus it started out Gold, and that was 15+ years ago; no telling how strong VampThad is now.

Tommy S

Except that Farrah can't kill him. No one can. At best she can put him in time out. But plenty of diamond rankers can do that right now too.

Nematrec

He arrived in Rimaros, so that's where the connection currently is.

Nematrec

I've had this thought for a while now. If the series is based off the Nietzsche quote, then to me it sounds like the makings of a villain. My theory is that Jason will become a villain by the end of the series, and that his friends would kill him in the end. I could never figure out how he would die now that he's immortal, but now with Farrah being a Defier of the Will that might just be the answer to my problem.

Squirtle

Shirt- did that say that Farrah would be a gestalt being now?

Pierce

It’s worded that all she can nullify is his efforts outside of him self. So she can be a stop gap if he goes on a rage, but at most that’s crippling his prime avatar and he gets a time out

Jordan Rogers

Also have we any ideas on how energy vampire thadwick will comeback to the story?

Jason Brown

I kinda want Jason to help fix Neil and Cassandra. Neil needs a break.

Jason Brown

That "Defier of the Will" option is such a good idea for Jason, particularly when given to Farrah.

Liesmith

I have always believed, marriage is just having found the best friend, the things that make a person a good friend, are exactly the same things that make them a good spouse, so you are just looking for the best that

Brandon Walker

I may be wrong on this, but that language is very strong on Farrah becoming a Defier. She may be undying, but she’s flawed just like anyone else. She can be tricked, she can be controlled by outside forces. And now it seems that the power balance between Jason and her is wrecked for all eternity if I’m reading that right. If she can dismiss his Prime Avatars at will, and if they are the only way he can interact with the Cosmos, I think that’s taking things too far in the other direction. He’s defenseless against her now.

Jordan Jones

TYFTC! Good stuff! Funny interaction with Danielle. I wonder how bad the cloud flask study is going to go. My biggest question, why is he putting the other end of the bridge from Earth in Rimaros? Did shirt not realize there was a lot more planet out there? Maybe I missed something.

N8rtotPlayz

Storm Kingdom. Probably because he has an in with the rulers, they owe him and have a good relationship. Plus they have the strength to protect it.

Jason Hardman

[Not to pressure you or anything, but there’s some iced tea up here was well. It’s peach.”] typo "was" needs to be "as"

Steven Voit

While I enjoyed the many epilogues during the time skip, the beginning of this book has felt like it has been stuck in the same quick skip-between-vignettes mode. It's felt like less of a story and more of a bunch of barely connected scenes, especially since the whole thing that Jason was spending time trying to do- reuniting with his team- has been deliberately and uncharacteristically absent. "Here's Jason. He loves his team. He really does. Okay, now he gets back to Pallimustus and most of his scenes are of him avoiding group time with his team, as he zips away from them and goes off to do anything *but* spend time with them!" While these scenes may be deliberately needed setup for the end of the series, the lack of him making time for some characters he's supposed to have missed, or that time being all off-screen really undercuts the narrative of him valuing their company. I know narratively those times may have happened, but since they haven't been allowed to happen on-screen it's hard to remember they have since they've merely been alluded to.

Marcaeus

I'm assuming Farrah picked defier but lowkey I want her to pick VoW

m4l4ch1m4v3t

Curious what the talk about what this means for them is gonna entail between Farrah and Jason

Jake Mardis

It’s always so mind-boggling really stupid when a main character in the story makes the kryptonite bullet that’ll inevitably kill him

Zachary Blevins

Farrah immortal, abilities fast tracked into Gold. Hump lost a bet and it's hilarious but I think we need to know more about why he decided to Anchor in the Storm Kingdom

Kalanaere

Yes she will. I honestly can’t wait for a few stories of Jason teaching Farrah how to control her new “physical” aura.

LoFiSamuraiJack

Jason becoming the Astral emperor is coming together, he's got his cult, more undeath purification powers, a universe, an immortal friend to help him keep his sanity. Now all he needs is another chance as purifying the builders death worlds like in book 6. Like Jason said, he beats the bad guy and takes his stuff, it's not always a boat 😉

Mist Sparrow

I don’t see it

The Hyperbolic Cookout

Me too. It’s very Primal Hunter. 😄

Kelly

Huh, so Farrah will become a physical-spiritual gestalt like Jason was after he accepted the World-Phoenix's gift evolution.

Adamanus

I love Danielle and Jason. 😂😂😂

Kelly

Original Yarresh was great. Jason's cave house in Rimarod. The cloud boat berthed in Aussie. These were places we moved slowly through and had a chance to feel settled. Jason himself still doesn't feel settled and I think we need more everyday stories that show his internal universe is becoming a place of permanence. And more Arbour, who is very undeveloped but a part of him now. Maybe the last two books rushed a bit in terms of character development? It's a power growth story, but what makes it great are the people and their stories in that context.

Addie

It feels like every few chapters it's "here's a magical amorphous space Jason created" that gets intricately described then never used again. No meaningful arcs to anchor them. It's a bit disconnecting. I miss the permanence of familiar places.

Addie

Yes! Where is the Fuck Yeah moment?

Addie

Honestly that feels more like a set up to a totally different series: Jason, now known as the God of Sandwiches, has long terrorized the cosmos in search of the perfect ingredients for the perfect sandwich. His former friends, Sophie and Farrah, are all that stand between Jason and his final ingredient; reality.

Daniel Wills

Sounds like it. She just has to reach diamond as well it seems.

JonO

The last book should just be a cook book.

Scott McCarthy

Oh I have been waiting for that ending with Jason and Danielle for what feels like YEARS!!!!! Thank YOU. I have a friend who teaches authors how to sell their books. And we talk about "writing to market " and while I don't think you do that....sometimes.. you probably do...and it is just so damn satisfying!!!! This was one of those moments And appreciated! @shirtaloon.

Crystal Donak

I think it was explained in the story somewhere that the magic would level out on earth to where gold rankers could live. If anyone has a more concrete answer please jump in.

Sena

Wasn't the builder an astral king before promotion? Or was he just a messenger

BaguaBrady

Any chance you can have Jason give out a few more recipes? We made the Lemonade from book 4 a couple of times now and enjoyed it.

ironholt00

“Certainly. Shall we take walk?” Would you like to buy a vowel? =D

Paratus

So Farrah is a half step transcendent just like Jason?

Hunter

Another side note... Jason has now achieved what the Builder hasn't. He's built his own planet. Entirely to his own specifications.

David Cooper

I'm guessing she's been hanging out with Trenchant Moore but still being silver was putting a damper on that.

Maximus

Side question... Nigel is gold now, does that mean that he has his own reality core to sip from, or has Earth's magic level advanced far enough so gold rankers don't need the extra magic?

David Cooper

So The Defier grew on Jason enough he wanted to make his own? I bet the builder would be so happy

Agent P.

They are just teasing Hump. That and she likely enjoys the flattery.

Scott McCarthy

He essentially created a different kind of counter when he helped Sophie get her essences and abilities. I’m curious if this turns out to be some foreshadowing. Dawn comes back he attempts to do what she has given him the chance to do and he goes dark chuuni. Farrah steps in and slaps him down.

Trevor Mallow

I really wanted to see jason explaining all the crazy stuff to Clive to see him get completely shocked.

Nathan Emerson

Lol. of the few Patreons I follow, you and First Defier are the ones I follow. And with both notifying close to the same time, my brain got effed up by the title. hahaha

Lonez Zhavec

Dawn will be, too, won't she? She was at the point of attaining her own transcendence, so I assume she'd be around as long as Jason and now Farrah.

Ligeia

I'm interested to read this as part of the completed book. Farrah always was her own person, but I wonder if we'll get some more information on what her time jump years were like to give her reaction and perspective more context. The tight friendship almost seems pushed being repair here. Glad it isn't! Tyftc

DJ Doughty

Yay! He gets to chat with mom #2, the one who likes him! TFTC!

Brad Gammey

This feels like setting up Farrah as a future villain, which makes sense because it's been a while since anything in the story felt like it had stakes

Thavleifrim

He almost got the Mom to see his "Universe" damn blockers

ItWasIDIO!!

Ofc it is high risk, but everything Jason does is high risk. And I think if people keep saying he is the guy with the evil powers and now he has vast cosmic powers too, having someone who can put a literal flash volcano on your head with 100% accuracy might be not too bad of an idea^^

SmokeJam

This feels like an awful idea. Who knows what kinds of people they will be in a thousand years much less a billion. Putting an equally immortal perfect counter to yourself out there feels silly.

Hayden

He knew what was coming? Lol

Elti Dub

Wasn’t that Hollywood?

Dylan Alexander

I’m going to assume that your text to speech malfunction and you meant “Defier”. Because DEFILER means something completely different

Aaron Schwartz

Yeah but, if her friends reach Diamond Rank they won’t die of old age, they just won’t be unkillable. So, they will be there. Her parents are never going to get past Gold, unless Purity’s Relic clears their bodies from the core use so I’m sure she came to terms with outliving them long ago.

Chris Furry

I love with what you have come up with. My first thought: Jason sure has a very Jason-way of proposing for a purely pragmatic forever-marriage :D I know they never had something together and are really best friends in a lot of ways, but true eternity is long and what better partner than an actually good friend, who knows and can say no to you.

SmokeJam

Loved the betting part at the end 😁

Leo

If she didn’t want it, she would’ve rejected it, and Jason would not have forced her

Aaron Schwartz

Tyftc!

John

Haha! We finally know who it was and how they got that title!

Frederick

Oh yes, people will talk!

Sirloki

Painfully short, but sweet nonetheless.

PacxDragon

Poor Humphrey. Why would he make that bet? As for Farrah, I’m glad she chose to be immortal, Jason, of all people, needs her as a defiant and honest friend willing to beat him into submission if he starts wandering off course.

Chris Furry

I knew Farrah would get a crazy power 😂😂! So glad Jason finally has someone guaranteed to be an immortal being, especially Farrah! TYFTC! Feels like you’re speeding things up but I know we’ll get the info we need when we need it! On track to catch up to Oda though. He better finish before you do!

Justin

Hump should have yelled dammit jason

Joe Foreman

Seriously is Jake gonna smash humps mom? The sexual tension between those two could be cut with a dull butter knife

Sylphie

So they did get married!

Jordan Rogers

Oh that's an elegant, and needed, solution. Jason definitely needs someone to tell him "no". Just look at what happened to Peter Jackson once he became too big to have someone do the same. /points, gesturing wildly, at the Hobbit trilogy. Which, at maximum, needed two movies to work. Three was self-indulgent wank. Ahem, sorry. My Farrah must have been on break >.>

Cyrus McEnnis

Let’s go Farrah! Also, I love having the gang together again. Great chapter.

Josh Vanderpool

Whip it out, Jason!! 😂

Buck

Is it just me or this ch seem short? Would have been nice to get both conversations in one ch. ethir way was a good ch and a way better role for her then as his voice. Keep it up 👍

John goode

Seems like they'll be balancers for each other with her being able to negate him for a short time but also him being able to suppress her revive for a short while in return

Cordell Patrick

Nice its good he will have some breaks in place the guy really needs them

Jackjargon

I think with Farrah’s personality, how important friends and family is to her, she would decline the offer. Just a thought.

Dazzoboy

Farrah never seemed like she would want immortality if I’m honest. I thought she’d have liked to go her own way but now she’s shackled to Jason for all time. Sad really.

Dylan Alexander

You could even say he transformed her into…. (Slowly puts on sunglasses) The First Defier… YYEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!! 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎

Aaron Schwartz

Hah! Neil! Bwahaha

JonO

That makes so much more sense for Farrah to be the Defier of his will instead of the voice. Touche Shirt for coming up with that because we know that Jason will need Farrah to give him the Gibbs slap treatment when he gets out of line.

Thomas Black

Not what I expected for Farrah but it was so much better!

Danny boy

With cosmic powers come universal responsibility. It would be nice to see Jason pull Farrah back from the brink if only one damn time

mhaj58

Let’s go!

Josh Vanderpool

Nice
