Harmy - Despecialized and Life Update March 2021
Hello guys, and welcome to another one of my little videos.
I have a few updates for you.
Before I get to Despecialized, let me give you some general life-updates:
In my previous update video, which you can find here:
I told you that I was going to be moving to a new apartment.
You've already seen bits of it in some of my latest videos
but let me give you a quick tour.
[B-Roll of apartment]
It's not gonna take long, as it's a very small apartment.
Due to this, it was quite challenging to cram all my stuff in here.
The collectors among you will understand :D
Luckily, I was able to create a 3D model of the apartment
and test how my furniture will fit in.
On the farm-house front, things have literally frozen up during winter
As central heating has yet to be installed,
so, for winter, we have moved to a single big room heated by a wood burning stove.
And in this cold, not much work can be done on or around the house.
[B-roll]
Though on my last visit, the snow has finally melted for a bit
and we decided to check out the attics of the barns.
As you can see, there's not much to be seen there.
I was hoping we might find something like in the attic of my girlfriend's parent's summer house.
[show B-roll]
Anyway, my girlfriend is able to work from home, so she mostly stays there with her cats,
because somebody has to be there to feed the stove,
while I live and work in Prague and we mostly only see each other on weekends.
That is until a couple of weeks ago, when the epidemiological situation got so bad,
that our government put into effect a harsh lockdown,
which bans us from traveling outside of our counties,
so we haven't been able to see each other for a couple of weeks now
and won't be able to for at least a couple more.
I don't want to get into politics here but it is getting pretty frustrating.
And after being one of the countries with the lowest numbers in the spring,
we are currently number one in the world in the number of cases per million people.
Actually, in the last update video, I told you my family was ok, and that is still the case,
but other than me, every member of my direct family has had the virus,
as they live in one of the hardest-hit counties.
Luckily, they all had fairly light symptoms and seem to be doing fine.
I have been having some flu-like symptoms myself but luckily tested negative.
Now, to the news on Despecialized:
In one of my latest videos, which you can find here:
I showed you how I was working in the Foundry Nuke,
the software I use at work for professional compositing on big blockbusters.
[B-roll]
Now, Nuke is an incredibly expensive piece of software –
the full-version license costs something like 10,000 dollars per year,
so I have been using the free non-commercial version,
which is awesome, because one can use it to learn to use Nuke for free
but, unfortunately, it has some severe limitations, the biggest of which is
that the maximum resolution output from it is 1080p.
But Nuke is such a powerful piece of software, that I just couldn't go back to After Effects.
So my plan was to work at 1080p and then use AI upscaling on the results.
But the non-commercial version of Nuke also doesn't support external plugins, such as Neat video
and can't apply external LUTs
So, what I had to do was, first do all the cleaning and denoising in Premiere,
[show B-roll]
render it out one by one with the proper LUTs,
and only then I could open Nuke and start working on a shot.
I described the whole process in this video:
This was super time-consuming and really kept me from wanting to work on Despecialized.
BUT A few months ago, Foundry announced a much cheaper version of Nuke for freelancers
called Nuke Indie.
It also has some limitations but far less than the non-commercial version.
It can output up to UHD 4K resolution
And, crucially, they recently added support for some third-party plugins, including Neat-video.
So, I decided to spring for it and it should make my whole process a hell of a lot more streamlined.
I'm currently using a one-month free trial but after that I will be buying it.
It's still quite expensive, at something like 1000 bucks per year with the EU tax included.
and on top of that, where the Neat-Video license for Premiere costs a little over a hundred bucks,
the OFX host version for Nuke costs twice as much.
[B-roll]
It should totally be worth it though, to be able to create a much more streamlined pipeline,
which will enable me to focus more on the work rather than the input/output issues,
so I will be buying this software regardless but any help offsetting the costs is, of course, very much appreciated.

But, there's more!
I was thinking, that to get on track with Despecialized 3.0,
I need to give myself a specific time-slot when I will work on it
and since, judging by the reactions to my “recreating the frames” video,
a lot of you seemed interested in the process,
I figured, I could do a regular live-stream of me working on Despecialized.
I was thinking every Sunday, 10pm my time.
Because, that's early afternoon on the US East coast
and late afternoon on the West coast
And yet not so late for me, that I would have to stay up too long before work.
And Sunday, because on Saturdays, at least under normal circumstances, I'm often not home
And on weekdays, I tend to be tired from work and wouldn't want it hanging over me.
Let me know in the comments, if you'd be interested in that
and if you have any suggestions for how and where to do it.
Well, that's it for today,
Thanks for watching

Wow, posting this here just saved my ass 😁 I turned off my computer without saving the document and if I hadn't posted here, the script would have been lost!

2021-03-13 00:51:22 +0000 UTCYeah I think it’s great to hear you’ve got a better workflow now. I’ll drop some support money in too. I think once a month like Ralf says is a good place to start so you don’t get too burdened by it. I think we all just want to see 3.0 as soon as you can do it. ;-)

2021-03-13 00:34:36 +0000 UTCSounds very intriguing. I just sent you some support for Nuke Indie via PayPal :) A livestream sounds very interesting and if it doesn't interfere with your work routine/flow when working on Despecialized I'd be curious to watch it. Maybe you could start by doing that once a month on a Sunday at 10pm as you say?
